Research Grants Received

Dell Computer Corporation $15,000 I received under the rubric of the DELLSTAR program a grant for the development of the MBA Scorecard, a web-based performance management and communication system. Global Supply Chain Management: Risk Factors and Coping Strategies $55,000 This grant was received from the Carnegie Bosch Institute. The project is intended to understand the challenges of implementing global processes, i.e. across cultures, infrastructures, and existing processes and software platforms. It is being undertaken in the context of Nortel’s global supply chain management initiative. The Nature and Causes of Organizational Cynicism $10,000 This is the first stage of a large-scale project aimed at understanding the role of cynicism in modern organizations. This stage involves developing a scale to measure organizational cynicism validly and reliably, and using interviews with members of a variety of organizations to aid in theory development. Support for this research has been provided by the University of Cincinnati Faculty Research Fellowship Program, as well as the College of Business Administration. This research is being undertaken with Pamela Brandes-Duncan. Strategic Decision-Making Project $25,100 This is a longitudinal study of the process and effectiveness of strategic decision-making. Support has been provided by a number of firms, including Allegheny Ludlum, Daily Juice Products, Drakenfeld Colors, DuPont, Elsevier North Holland, Greif Companies, Honeywell, Lutron Electronics, Bayer USA, and Quaker Chemical. Undertaken with Mark Sharfman. Design for Manufacturing Project $60,000 This was an investigation of how manufacturing firms can be restructured to enhance coordination between the product design and manufacturing functions. Support is being provided by a number of corporations, including Boeing, Caterpillar, Cleveland Pneumatic, Honeywell, McDonnell Douglas, and Rockwell International. Performed with Gerald Susman. Industrial Modernization Incentives Program $29,108 This was an assessment of four cases of industrial modernization under DOD's IMIP program, and was sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This research was conducted with Gerald Susman. Advanced Manufacturing Technology Implementation $27,500 This was a study of effective methods for implementing advanced technology into manufacturing firms, and was supported by Westinghouse Electric Corporation. This research was conducted with Gerald Susman. Organizational Interfaces $30,000 This research investigated the barriers and facilitators to effective coordination across departments in the implementation of advanced manufacturing technology. It was supported by Rockwell International, Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and Polaroid. This research was conducted with Gerald Susman and Pamela Porter.
