July 2000 – Present Dean and Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor of Textile & Apparel Technology & Management.

NC State’s College of Textiles is the largest university-based textile school in the United States. The college has more than 800 graduate and undergraduate students housed in a state-of-the-art education and research building. It annually awards about half of the country’s bachelor’s degrees and 75 percent of the country’s advanced degrees in textiles. Research at the college is strong in medical and biotextiles, nonwoven materials, polymer science, technology management, supply-chain management, new product development, branding, e-commerce, thermal protection & comfort, and high-performance fibers and fabrics. August 1987 – July 2000 Chairman and CEO, Juran Institute, Inc.

Juran Institute is a research, educational and consulting institution specializing in quality management. The institute offers public courses, in-house courses and workshops, training materials and consulting to clients throughout the world. As Chairman and CEO I was responsible for general management, technical leadership, and other business functions of the company. I also prepared and presented public and in-house seminars in over fifty countries and provided assistance to major clients in developing their quality management systems.

AT&T Bell Laboratories 1982-1987 Head, Quality Theory & Technology Department

The Quality Theory and Technology Department was responsible for research, development and implementation of quality theory and methods throughout all functions and business units of AT&T. This responsibility included development and delivery of training and education programs in quality management, reliability prediction and estimation, robust product and process design and experimental design. The department also designed, developed and distributed quality and reliability software tools for use throughout AT&T. Members of the department provided technical and management assistance in quality planning, control and improvement to the workforce, members of technical staff and all levels of management at AT&T.

1980-1982 Head, Network Performance Characterization Department

Responsible for planning, designing, and conducting laboratory and field studies of Bell System network performance. Work included designing and conducting field studies to determine customer perceptions of switching and transmission quality. Results were used to focus network quality improvement activities. Also responsible for large scale data analyses, data base management systems, and development of appropriate analytic methods. Work included designing and developing the Automated System for Performance Evaluation of the Network (ASPEN), a computer controlled measurement system with remote microprocessor controlled nodes. ASPEN is now used by leading telephone companies throughout the world.

1976-1980 Supervisor, Field Quality Theory and Systems Group

Responsible for analyses of data from field and factory experiments to determine actual product quality and reliability and for development of methods to support life tests, accelerated life tests and quality control methods used in AT&T manufacturing, service and operating units.

1973-1976 Member of Technical Staff, Theoretical Studies Group

Performed analyses in support of quality assurance theory and methods, did quality control studies and developed basic methods for quality assurance. Conducted studies of quality control and quality improvement activities in AT&T manufacturing locations and in competitors' and other leading companies' manufacturing locations.

Columbia University

January 1982 - June 2000

Adjunct Professor in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department, Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Taught courses in basic quality methods and management of quality (first year graduate level).

North Carolina State University

1995 - 2000

Adjunct Professor, Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management, College of Textiles. Gave guest lectures for graduate students and special workshops for senior executives sponsored by the school.

Visiting lecturer in School of Public Health. Gave part of special summer five-week course for clinical fellows in quality management for health care.

United States Army

1963-1968

Commissioned in Regular Army as ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate. Served two years in combat branch (Artillery) in West Germany and 35 months in basic branch (Ordnance) in West Germany, Fort Carson, Colorado and the Republic of Vietnam. Duties included: nuclear weapons assembly and transportation, shop officer, executive and commanding officer of maintenance companies, and a special assignment in Vietnam as the leader of a small group (33) of instructors teaching inventory control and supply procedures to both using and supply units. Rank at resignation: Captain.
