Region 4 Special Education Solutions offers professional development sessions designed to facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities. Our sessions also can be customized and delivered as on-site trainings for districts and campuses.

The following courses will be held at the Region 4 McKinney Conference Center. Session and materials costs are partially funded through state and federal grants.

The following sessions correlate with the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) peer review process. Each description includes the main program area that is targeted for that particular session. The program areas outlined in the RDSPD peer review are as follows: 1. Preparation

Visual Phonics: Review and ImplementationOctober 9, 2014Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Fee: $45 | Session ID: 1066487Participate in a review of the Visual Phonics hand shapes and printed symbols. This session will include a discussion of the rationale and research related to Visual Phonics and provide several activities to practice the hand shapes and printed symbols. Time will also be allocated to participants’ needs regarding the integration of Visual Phonics into their phonological awareness, auditory training, phonics, decoding, spelling, and speech therapy lessons. Examining Best Practices in Educational AudiologyOctober 21, 2014Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Fee: $45 | Session ID: 1078302Participate in a training that is designed around the unique roles and responsibilities of educational audiologists. Gain current information related to best practices in conducting audiological evaluations, troubleshooting amplification technology, completing functional listening evaluations, and integrating evaluation results into educational programming. Explore differences between research-based practices and real-world application. This training is provided for teachers who work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in prekindergarten through high school, with emphasis on inclusive supports, accommodations, and practices in the classroom. J. K. Rowling Is My Copilot: Using Mentor Texts to Scaffold Deaf or Hard of Hearing Writers February 19, 2015Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Fee: $45 | Session ID: 1067973 Develop practical strategies to support struggling writers. This training is designed for participants to gain knowledge of how to design lessons that provide students experience with analyzing authors’ craft and applying those treasures to their own writing. Examine best practices for writing instruction for students who are deaf or hard of hearing at any grade level using a variety of short mentor texts from multiple genres. Best Practices in the Evaluation of Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing March 24, 2015Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Fee: $45 | Session ID: 1075536 Participate in a training designed to address unique issues when evaluating students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This training will look at using a cognitive processing approach to evaluate students who are part of a low incidence population. Additionally, there will be a focus on choosing appropriate testing instruments, analyzing the data, and writing an integrated report. Credit: CPE 6 (program area 4)

A Family Centered Approach to Serving Infants and Toddlers Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing April 1, 2015 Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Fee: $45 | Session ID: 1085921 Examine best practices in utilizing a family centered approach to support parents with young children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Gain a clearer understanding of the rationale for this approach in home-based early intervention programs. Signing Exact English (SEE) SkillshopAugust 3–6, 2015Time: 8:15 a.m.–5:00 p.m. | Fee: $180 | Session ID: 1066606 This week-long workshop for adult learners is designed to meet the needs of beginning and advanced users of Signing Exact English. Participants will improve their expressive and receptive signing skills, sign vocabulary, visual features of sign language, and song and storytelling techniques. All skill levels will be addressed through intensive work in level-matched small groups. Recent research findings on the effectiveness of Signing Exact English will also be presented.
