Now, it’s pretty unlikely that any of us will have Paul’s intensity of experience in our own encounter with Jesus. For most of us, it will be gentler and more gradual. Just over a week ago, on January 25, the

Church celebrated the Feast of the

Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. Most of

us have heard the story of Saul, on the road

to Damascus, being knocked to the ground

by a flash of light from heaven. By the time

he was helped to His feet, Paul, as he would soon be

known, was a changed man, transformed forever by his

most personal encounter with the risen and ascended

Jesus.

But, what does it really mean to undergo conversion?

Years ago, the term was mainly used to describe the

process of changing from one religion to another. However,

we know that there is much more to it than that! At the time

of our baptism, we are forgiven our sins, we become God’s

adopted daughters and sons and we are imprinted with the

character of Christ. Our gratitude for such an amazing –

and unmerited – expression of God’s love for us should

cause our lives to become a constant process of conversion

– of turning away from sin and of turning toward God –

becoming more and more like our brother Jesus in all that

we believe and do.

I truly believe that we understand that and really are

prepared to do our best to live out our baptismal call.

However, it can be pretty hard to demonstrate the fullness

of our gratitude to someone we don’t really know. It’s likely

that we have a fair bit of knowledge about Jesus, but it may

be that we haven’t yet experienced that personal encounter

with Jesus that will, in a very real way, allow us to “put a

face to the name” of the one who has always wanted only

the best for us, even to the point of sacrificing his life

modelling how his Father wishes us to live.

Now, it’s pretty unlikely that any of us will have Paul’s

intensity of experience in our own encounter with Jesus.

For most of us, it will be gentler and more gradual. And,

the opportunities for this transforming experience are

plentiful, even within our own parish. Last Thursday, we had

our first full session of Alpha, a worldwide

nondenominational program that is

intended to facilitate our coming to know

Jesus in a very personal way rather than

just coming to know more about Jesus.

This past weekend, over 120 of our Grade 8 students

celebrated their growing maturation in their relationship with

Jesus, through the outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit in the

Sacrament of Confirmation.

Readings for February 12, 2017 The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Sirach 15.15-20 Psalm: Psalm 119.1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34 (R. 1)

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2.6-10 Gospel: Matthew 5.17-37

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 5, 2017

Deacon John’s Message (cont’d)

These young people realize – as do we – that this

celebration was not the end of their journey of conversion

but only another milestone. And, each one of us will

have the opportunity to renew and to deepen our own

relationship with Jesus on Ash Wednesday, less than a

month away. When the minister imposes ashes on our

forehead and urges us to “Turn away from sin and be

faithful to the Gospel”, these words will challenge us to

renew our individual commitment to conversion by

recalling the great gift of our baptism and by re-

committing ourselves – to paraphrase the Confirmation

rite – to conforming ourselves more fully to Christ, the

Son of God, our brother and our friend. Now, there’s

something to look forward to and, maybe even to prepare

for!

Holy Family Parish is member

of a network of some twelve

parishes throughout Canada and

the United States. This network is

broken down into smaller parts,

called cohorts, whose senior leadership teams work together

to integrate the principles presented by Fr. James Mallon, in

his book, Divine Renovation. Holy Family is working with

three parishes, similar in size and complexity. They include a

parish in Nebraska, Illinois and Maryland.

Fr. James Mallon, pastor of St. Benedict Parish, has

utilized the best wisdom of both secular and ecclesial models

to arrive at the model we are integrating here at Holy Family.

These include the wisdom gleaned from, Good to Great, by

author, Jim Collins, Gallup's StrengthsFinder, The Ideal

Team Player, and The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, by

Patrick Lencioni: instruments for building a great leadership

team. Of course, teachings from the documents of the Second

Vatican Council, keep us close to the directions set by the

Church, and Forming Intentional Disciples, by Sherry

Weddell.

As you already know, Alpha is at the heart of our

transformation process. Through it people will be provided an

opportunity for a significant encounter with the risen Lord.

We are now working on the support systems needed to

sustain the newly found experience of Jesus. We call this

"Our Game Plan."

Thank you for your ongoing prayer for the divine

renovation of our faith community, especially for your

sacrifice in praying the "Divine Renovation Prayer" at the end

of Mass. All of these are necessary pieces of renewing our

parish in Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit!

It is possible to live differently in this world....

It is this witness I expect from you!” ~ Pope Francis

your call. Open their hearts to great ideals, to great things.

we may cooperate with you in building your reign of mercy

and truth, of justice and peace. Amen.

~ Pope Francis, Adapted from the Message on the 51st World Day for Vocations
