Numana’s and Sirolo’s centers in the Mount Conero Regional Park (AN)

A 180 km long coastline, beautiful beaches,26 seaside resorts on the Adriatic Seawhere you can spend quiet holidays, thesea port of Ancona and 9 marinas. Theshores of the Marche stretch from thepromontory of Gabicce Mare to the mouthof the River Tronto. It is divided in twoparts each facing a dif ferent directionstarting from the promontory of MountConero which is the most peculiar featureof the entire Adriatic shore north of theGargano. The coastline is one of the manyexamples of the great variety of landscapeswhich nature has so highly bestowed uponevery tiny bit of the Marche territory .Promontories, creeks, and small covesmark the northern coast like jewelsunderlining natures wild beauty creating astrong visual impact. The shores of theProvince of Pesaro-Urbino go from themouth of the River Tavollo to the mouth ofthe Cesano offering 40 km of beachesstretching along rolling landscapes whichjustify its name “Riviera of the hills”. Thewide sandy beaches from Gabicce to

Marotta slope down gently towards thesea offering safe playgrounds to childrenand to people who do not have greatfamiliarity with swimming. The long and fine beaches, are divided uphere and there by promontories, mouths ofstreams or rivers, harbours and ports.To the north we find Gabicce Mare, a fine

sea side placed on two levels: the sea levellaying on a small bay surrounded by a widesandy beach with many hotels and gardens,the ideal place for the sunny hours of theday, while Gabicce Monte, perched on topof a scenic clif f covered by a wildvegetation, offers many evening and nighttime attractions with its restaurants,pizzerias, and night clubs. Pesaro, the

sparkling city where the echoes ofGioacchino Rossini’s music still linger on,offers 8 Km of wide and sandy beaches -opened towards the sea or sheltered bycliffs - and a quiet sea resort life.A 20 Km long attractive scenic roadunwinds itself between Gabicce Mare andPesaro, crossing picturesque fishermen’stowns perched high on steep clif fs plungingvertically into the deep blue of the AdriaticSea: Casteldimezzo, Fiorenzuola di Focara,Santa Marina Alta, the whole area is part ofMount San Bartolo Regional Park,founded in 1996 having much in commonwith Mount Conero Park. Even if the clif fshere are not so steep they still maintainfeatures of this region’s natural wild beauty.The contrast between the naturallysculptured seaside cliffs and the hinterlandhills carved for rural purposes, is there forall to behold. This humid zone is regardedimportant for the nation because of thenumerous species of marine birds thatspend the winter here, while it is of greatinterest during spring when they migrate.

The flowering brooms offer a suggestiveand incomparable smells and coloursblending into the crystal clear bluecoast waters.Another scenic road unwinds on theArdizio hill top, between Pesaro and Fano,where the seashore flattens up in linear and

sandy beaches interrupted by short shingleones. Openly cordial and friendly are thetwo resort areas of Fano: the short andsandy Lido to the north and the long andshinghly Sassonia to the south, layingbetween a picturesque fishing port. With itsvery ancient origins, Fanum Fortunae

maintains clear and evident signs of itshistory offering its guests an opportunity todiscover its artistic historical and culturalassets. Two other friendly sea resorts aresituated between Rivers Metauro andCesano: Torrette di Fano and Marotta diMondolfo, with its old fishermen’s villagefeaturing a peculiar beach which is in part of pebbles.Senigallia, with its 12 km of white andsandy beach is the perfect setting for asummer holiday but its ancient origins (itwas known in ancient times as SenaGallica, ancient capital city of the SenoniGauls) offers sites of historical interest aswell. By 1850’s the coaches of thearistocratic Romans and Austriansalready strolled on its avenues.

This tidy city has kept alive its old warmand welcoming attitude which togetherwith its “velvet beach” has made it famousthroughout Europe. Nearby almost anatural follow up to the sandy beach isMarzocca. Moving on towards Anconawe can find other characteristic sea resorts.Only a few kilometres from

Montemarciano, originally the ancient cityof Marziano, there is Marina with its finebeach and its ruins of a fifteenth-centuryfortress; next to it there is FalconaraMarittima very conveniently located nearAncona, a perfect junction point of road,train, and airport networks. Close by thereis the beautiful beach of Palombina,

modernly equipped, it is the ideal settingfor a quiet family tourism.In Ancona, we can certainly recommend ascenic walk to Passetto, one of the mostsuggestive areas of the city of fering a fullyequipped park and a double stairway fromwhich it is possible to reach the sea below .The flat and levelled seashore is abruptly

interrupted to the south of Ancona by thegreen vegetation of Mount Conero (thefirst regional Park founded in the Marchein 1987) peremptorily merging within thedeep blue of the Adriatic sea offering aview of rare and suggestive impact. It is anatural environment which extends forapproximately 6,000 ha and includes art,culture, history and excursion routesentwined within the magic of theMediterranean mark. This is the startingpoint of one of the most beautiful seashorearea of the entire Adriatic coast: the“Conero Riviera”, with its changinglandscapes where white and sandysheltered beaches are abruptly interruptedby steep rocky cliffs diving into the sea andsometimes can be reached only by boats oralong small paths. A scenic road unwindsthrough all this area, often losing itselfdeeply into thick woods of pine, oak and

bay oak trees. But the crown jewel of thecoast is certainly the Bay of Portonovo, anuncontaminated wonder of nature, an idealdestination for one who is looking for anextraordinary place to spend a relaxingholiday. Enchanting shades of colour playon the surrounding landscape of MountConero (572 m) especially during springwhen the broom is in flower and in autumnwhen it is blanketed with the warm huesof corbezzolo – strawberry tree (KomarosGk, from which derives the ancient namegiven to the promontory). Among the many beaches ornating the clif fof the Conero is the “Two Sisters” beach,walled in by steep rock clif fs, it is surelyone of the most outstanding spots of theAdriatic, two grand rock spurs rise fromthe sea, which here takes on unusualdelicate chromatic hues. The best knownseaside resorts of Ancona’s coast are allhere, enclosed within a few kilometres,Sirolo (which was given the “Queen of theItalian beaches” from LegambienteAward in 1996), Numana and Marcelli.Sirolo is in a picturesque location perched

high above the sea. Once a fortified castleit still holds traces of the ancient medievalstructures. Headquarters of the RegionalPark visitors must pass through a smallforest to reach its small but enchantingbeaches. Numana, the Roman Umana withits well equipped marina, clean waters and

brilliant colours, has known a constantincrease in tourism; Marcelli is the mostmodern area of the Riviera, it featuresmany tourist resorts, residences andaccommodation offering every comfort. Tothe south of Mount Conero the coast againlevels and the beach stretches and widensfor entire kilometres, through river outletsand coast watertights. Porto Recanati, theelegant “drawing-room on the sea”immediately imposes its dominion on theAdriatic with its 8 Km long sandy beachwhich separates the town from the sea.The ancient fishing district which wasconstructed around the XV century SvevoCastle, still conserves today environmentalcharacteristics of the past which are notablewhen walking its paths accompanied bythe smell of the sea.The beach and the woods run alongside asthey often do along shores of the Marchewith hills creating a perfect crown to thesea. This is true for Porto Potenza Picena,to the south of Porto Recanati, where thehills favour a mild and temperate weather.Next we immediately find CivitanovaMarche with its long beach divided by thefishing and tourist ports, the latter one hashelped in the development of seaside

tourism. The Roman Cluana rose from theruins of around 1000AD, and gave life t otwo establishments: Castel or RipaSancti Maroni and Civitanova Alta,historic center of the actual town.Many sport and art events are held hereduring the summer season. The exhibitionbuilding, the sport stadium, and the sailingand windsurfing school complete thepicture of this seaside centre which meetall age needs.The geographical location of the citytogether with the convenient links to theroad network make it the ideal startingpoint for inland excursions as well as aperfect junction to reach the principallocations of this region.To the south we can find PortoSant’Elpidio, an old sailor’s village, nowan important industrial centre and a wellequipped seaside resort. With its typical

sandy beaches it marks the beginning of the“Green Picena Riviera” enclosing manywarm and welcoming seaside resorts,lapped by the crystal clear water of the seaand surrounded by gentle hills enlightenedby the vivid Mediterranean flora. Only afew kilometres away are Lido di Fermoand Porto San Giorgio, an importantindustrial, fishing and bathing centre (witha marina able to house 1,000 boats). Itsancient medieval core is now surroundedby the modern town with its avenues,blooming gardens, and well equipped withall the facilities for every kind of tourism.Further on south, we meet MarinaPalmense and Marina di Altidona, whichhave encountered considerable expansion

in recent years, while located on thealluvial mouth of River Aso, lays Pedaso, abathing and farming centre where the sandyseashore is interrupted by the clif f. After Pedaso, the climate assumesMediterranean characteristics thusfavouring a varied flora with large thicketsof shrubbery and evergreens of all kinds.The first location you reach is CupraMarittima, featuring of a medieval core ona hill dominating the modern town that hasdeveloped after 1890. For the beauty of the

pine-forests, the soft sand, the fresh depthsand the quite environment, CupraMarittima is an ideal holiday destinationfor children. The old district, stillsurrounded by a XV century wall, wasdepopulated during the early years of theXX century but recently it has beenrediscovered and it is now a popularsummer holiday location.From Grottammare to San Benedetto delTronto and up to Porto d’Ascoli, markingthe southern boundary of the Marche, thereare still more vast and sandy beachesframed by an amazing background ofpalms and oleanders which are acharacterising feature of the so-called“Palm Riviera” with its typically

Mediterranean, sub-tropical and tropicalvegetation, exotically scented by flavourscoming from overseas.The urban layout of Grottammare featuresa medieval core (Monte Castello) high ona steep and picturesque hill towards thesea still surrounded by ancient walls and ofa modern seaside town with villas, hotelsand bathing establishments merging intothe lush vegetation of paths and gardens.Interesting for its history and naturalbeauty, this area offers guests significant artand spacious beaches with fine, uniformsand which adjoins that of San Benedettodel Tronto. The major sea resort of thePiceno and one of the most important inItaly boasts a selective clientele even at aninternational level, the main attraction isthe vast and beautiful sandy beach, alongwith the luxurious and relaxing green of thepalms, oleanders and pine woods. narrow alleys radiating from the Belvedere,dominated by the fourteenth centuryhexagonal Gualtieri Tower.The Marche are characterised by lots ofsmall towns perched on the upper townscrowning the shores, easy to reach from thesea. These strategically located scenicbalconies are the ancient cores of theantiques centres from which later on theseaside towns have developed. Sometimestheir origins go as far back as the Picenesera and here we can often admire theremains of ancient watchtowers built todefend the populations from the Saracens.This is true for Gabicce Monte, the RomanCastellum Ligabitii; Fiorenzuola diFocara (which owes its name to thelingering memories of the fire signals madeto the sailors); for Pesaro’s castles such asTrebbiantico, Novilara (one of the mostimportant settlements of the Picenes era)and Candelara (still surrounded by ancientwalls). In the province of Ancona too thereare many locations worthy of interest suchas: Falconara Alta, defensive castrum ofFalconara Marittima, the castle ofMontemarciano and Numana, ancientPicenes port. One of the best examples ofthe relationship between the seaside townsand “high hill centres” is CivitanovaMarche and Civitanova Alta. Furthersouth, Porto San Giorgio, the romanNavale Firmanorum, features twodistinctive areas, one towards the hills (theCastle District and the fortress which wecan admire in Carlo Crivelli’s Polyptych ofPorto S. Giorgio) and, on the other side ofthe main road, the seaside town. Fewkilometres away is Torre di Palme, acastle perched high on a clif f plungingvertically into the sea, owing its name tothe watchtower function it once had. towns and the sea is well maintained in thethree southern settlements of the Marcheshores: Cupra Marittima with Marano,Grottammare with Grottammare Altaand San Benedetto del Tronto.In ancient times, ships sailed from theMarche to distant destinations justifying thedefinition given to it by famous medievalistJ. Le Goff, “a real bridge to the East”.Pesaro, Ancona and Senigallia wereimportant towns for European fairs. Theystill continue to maintain traces of theserelationships on a large scale. During the seventeenth century, as theimportance of deep-sea fishing increased,an important economical and urban changetook place along the shores of the Marchewhen the populations started to come downfrom the hill settlements towards the vastand sandy beaches. The fleets of fishingboats of San Benedetto del Tronto,Civitanova Marche, Ancona, Senigallia andFano still supply Italian markets with fish.They even reach ocean to practice deep-seafishing along the African shores. Thishowever, is not the case, because in theMuseum of Art and Popular Traditions of Rome, the most consistent group of modelsails – even 16 – comes from San

Benedetto del Tronto, a confirmation of thebirth of an ancient civilization in which thefishing economy and culture has beenrecorded and ennobled. Thoses interestedin sea and maritime history can satisfy theircuriosity at the Sea Museum in Pesaro, theMarine Biology Museum in Fano, theAmphora Museum, the AntiquariumTruentinum, the Museum of Fishing andSeafaring Civilization, the Fish Museumin San Benedetto del Tronto and thePiceno Malacology Museum in CupraMarittima, the largest museum in the worlddedicated to the collection of shells.The regions beachside centers offer variouswater sports such as windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing - with schools located inmajor towns - and underwater fishing, inparticular in Ancona, Vallugola, Portonovo,Sirolo, Numana and Pedaso.The Marcheare fully equipped to offer the visitor morethan just a bathing holiday, they give the

opportunity to enjoy the beauties of thenearby higher inland areas along with themarine landscapes linked together in aperfect cocktail (as in the Regional Park ofMount San Bartolo and Mount Conero)with suggestive itineraries leading up to the“high hill and inland towns” to discover themany artistic, cultural historical gems ofthis region.The great variety of landscapes is thesecret of the attractions of fered to thetourist in the Marche. Here family orientedtourism mingles perfectly with youthtourism, owing to the many structurescatering to everyone’s wishes with everypossible type of facilities.The Marche arenot one of mass tourism’s favouritedestinations and this is certainly one of thisregion’s greatest qualities, since it enablesregion to offer an enriching human scaleexperience within the surrounding of itswell maintained natural environment.
