About the Placement TestsDiscover English Placement Tests check students’ general knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and functions, as well as reading comprehension. They can be used to identify the most suitable starting point for a class. The test has been written on the basis of the content of Level 1.

Administering the testMake sure that your students sit comfortably. Hand out the tests to students. Note that there are two versions of the test so that students have no chance of copying answers from each other. Distribute the two versions in a way that suits the seating arrangement in your classroom.

Tell students that they should mark their answers clearly on the tests. Explain what they need to do in every task. Set a time limit. The whole test should take no more than 40 minutes. You should give 1 point for each correct answer. Thus, the total number of points for the test is 40. The point values for each section are given below.

Interpreting the resultsA score of 34 points and above means that students are ready to start learning from Discover English 2. If your students get between 24 and 33 points, you may decide to start from Level 2. However, you will need more time and extra activities to introduce and cover the material. If your students get fewer than 24 points, Discover English 1 is a more suitable starting point for them.

Nevertheless, you need to choose the course level bearing in mind not only the test results but also other factors, such as the number of students per group, the number of English lessons per week etc.
