Introduction
Thisqualicationgivesprospectivedanceteachersasolid
groundingintheskillsandknowledgerequiredtoteach
danceinasafeenvironment.Itconsistsoffourmandatory
units.Twounitsaregenericandcoverteachingskillswith
afocusonteachingobservationandsafedancepractice.
Theothertwounitsaredancegenrespecicandfocus
ontechnical,performancebasedandmusicalknowledge
requiredatthislevelboththroughpersonalperformance
andthatofpupilsofvariouslevels.
Duringthecourselearnersstudyaboutobservation
techniquesandhowthesemayleadtogreater
understandingofteachingmethodsandskills:thisserves
asabasisforthedevelopmentofpracticalteachingskillsatLevel4(DiplomainDanceEducation).Manylearners
arebasedinvocationaldancecolleges,butthesyllabus
isdesignedalsotoallowtheparticipationoflearnersin
smallerschools,outsidetheformalcollegenetwork.Unit2
inparticularmaybestudiedbydistancelearningwiththe
supportofthelearners’ApprovedDanceCentres(ADC)or
aDistanceLearningTutor.
ThequalicationhasaQualicationsandCredit
Framework(QCF)creditvalueof68anditsQualication
AccreditationNumberis501/1002/0.
Target Learners
TheDDIisprimarilyaimedatlearnerswhowishtoprepare
fortheDiplomainDanceEducation(DDE)tobecome
accrediteddanceteachers.TheDDIhasbeenaccreditedby
OfqualatLevel3ontheQCF,whichisroughlyequivalent
to‘A’levelstandard.
Entry conditions
Learnersmustbeatleast17yearsofagebeforetheendoftheacademicyearinwhichtheyregister.
Method of Study
ThequalicationiscurrentlyofferedbyADCsandis
availablethroughouttheEuropeanUnion.Trainingmay
taketheformofclassseminars,longorshortcourses,
classandindividualtutorials,distancelearningandprivate
studyaswellasotherformsoflearning;thereforeitis
recommendedthatinterestedstudentscontactanumber
oftheADCsintheirareatoascertaintheformofstudythatsuitsthembest.Anup-to-datelistofADCsmaybe
foundonwww.dance-teachers.orgorintheISTD’sDance
ExtramagazinewhichisavailablefromtheProfessional
DevelopmentAssistantintheEducationandTraining
Department.
LearnerswishingtoembarkontheDDImustcomplete
aLearnerRegistrationForm,availablefromtheADCorthe
TeachingModulesAssistantintheEducationandTraining
Department.
Prior Accreditation and Achievement
TheDDIallowslearnerstobuildontheircurrent
qualicationsandexperiences.Wherelearnershave
achievedcerticatedqualicationswithinoroutsideof
theQCFthatmeetthelearningoutcomesandassessment
criteriaofaunit(s),theymayapplytoclaimexemption
fromtherelevantunit(s)ofthequalicationthroughtheexemptionroute.Wherelearnersfeeltheycan
demonstratewheretheirpreviouslyachievedknowledge,
understandingorskillsmeetthelearningoutcomes
andassessmentrequirementsforaunit(s)withinthe
qualication,theymayapplytoclaimcreditsforthe
relevantunit(s)throughtherecognitionofpriorlearning.
Allapplicationsmustbemadethroughthelearner’sADC.

inanothergenre.Units3and4arespecictoeachdance
genreandthelearnermaychoosetotaketheseunits
morethanoncetopursuethestudyofdifferentdance
genres.Unit3mustalwaysbeachievedbeforethelearner
maybeexaminedforUnit4.
Learnersmustcompleteallunitsofthequalication
inamaximumofveyears.Learnersreturningafter
morethanveyearsmayberequiredtoattendrefresher
coursestobringthemselvesup-to-datewithcurrentpractice.Thiswillbeatthediscretionofthelearner’sADC
whowillassesstheirskills,knowledgeandunderstanding
ofthepreviouslyattainedunits.

Assessment Methods
Assessmenttechniquesaredesignedtoassesseach
unitofthequalicationinanappropriatemanner.The
differentassessmentmethodsusedare:
n Tutor-assessedlessonobservations(Unit1)
n Tutor-assessedtaskcompletion(Unit2)
n ExternalassessmentbyISTDMarkersorExaminers
(Units2,3and4)
Throughoutthecourseofstudythelearnerbuilds
aportfolioofevidence.Thisallowsthelearnertime
forreection,self-evaluationandself-improvement.
AllportfoliosaresubjecttomoderationbyanISTD
AssessortoensurethattheADC’sassessmentisvalid,
fair,reliableandconsistentwithrequiredstandards.The
ISTDAssessoralsoconrmsthattheportfoliocontains
sufcientevidenceofadequatequalitytojustifytheADC’sassessmentofthelearner’sprogress.

unitinthefollowingpages.
Awarding and Certication
Onsuccessfulcompletionofallunitsofthequalication
eachlearner’sportfolioisstandardisedbytheISTD.This
meansthatastandardisationpanelofISTDAssessors
conrmsthatevidenceacrossallADCsandalldancegenresissatisfactoryandofasimilarlevel.Wherethere
isevidenceofdisparity,oneormoreportfoliosmaybe
rejectedandfurtherassessmentrequiredofthelearner(s).
Certicatesforthequalicationareissuedwhenall
unitshavebeenachievedandstandardisationhastaken
place.Unitcerticationisavailableonrequestfromthe
TeachingModulesAssistantintheEducationandTraining
Departmentatafee.

Introduction
Theaimofthisunitistodevelopthelearner’spersonal
observationskillsandunderstandingofteachingand
learningtechniques.Observation,identication,analysis
andevaluationskillspromotethelearners’reective
thoughtandself-evaluationinrelationtotheteaching
andlearningprocessesthattakeplace,providingthebasis
forprogressiontodanceteaching.
Content
Thelearnerundertakesaminimumofsixhoursofformal
andassessedobservationoflessonsattwolevelsoftheGradedExaminationsinDance,onebetweenPrimary
andGrade3andonebetweenGrade4andIntermediate.
DancesportlearnersmaychoosetosubstituteDancesport
MedalTestsuptoGold,oneofeitherPre-BronzeorBronze
andoneofeitherSilverorGold.Thesesixhoursmust
consistofaminimumofsixobservations.
Thesetwogroupsofstudentsshouldbeobserved
overtimeinordertonotetheirprogressionandretention
ofknowledge,skillsandunderstanding;itistherefore
stronglyrecommendedthatthenalobservationsaredividedwiththreehoursofobservationsatthelowerlevel
andthreehoursatthehigherlevel.Ifthisisnotpossible,a
minimumoftwoobservationsateachlevelarerequired.
Usingthesamegroupofstudents,thelearnermay
eitherattendconsecutivelessons,orattendlessonsaftera
lapseoftime,asconsideredappropriateindiscussionwith
theirApprovedTutor.
Aftereachobservationthelearnershouldcomplete
therelevantpaperworkanddiscusstheirobservations
withtheirApprovedTutor.Theseessentialelementsoffeedback,discussionandformativeassessmenthave
beenbuiltintotheassessmentcriteriaofUnit1andare
evidencedinthelearner’sportfolio.
Learnersarerequiredtosatisfyatleast75%ofthe
assessmentcriteria,aslistedinFig. 1overleaf,atleasttwo
orthreetimesduringobservations.Alllearningobjectives
shouldbecoveredoneachobservation.
Assessment
Thedevelopingskillsandunderstandingofthelearneraredocumentedbytheaccumulationofevidencein
theportfolio.Thelearner’sApprovedTutormakesa
seriesofjudgments,recordedintheportfolio,relating
totheadequacyofthelearner’sdevelopmentand
understanding.If,atthepointformalassessmenttakes
place,theApprovedTutorjudgesthelearnertohave
satisedlessthan75%oftheassessmentcriteria,a
furtherperiodofformalobservationwillbenecessary
toallowthelearnertoreachthelevelofknowledgeand
understandingrequired.
Itshouldbenotedthatwhileanumberofobservations
maybecompletedthroughoutthestudyofthisunit,itis
onlythelastsixconsecutivehoursofobservationsthat
willbeformallyassessedbytheApprovedTutorandthe
ISTDAssessor.
Learning Outcomes
BysuccessfullycompletingUnit1ofthecourseofstudy
thelearnerwillhave:

Unit3isspecictothedancegenrechosenbythelearner
andmaybestudiedmultipletimesifthelearnerwishesto
qualifyinmorethanonegenre.Thisunitaimstoprovide
learnerswithskills,knowledgeandunderstandingaspart
oftheprogressivemasteryofaparticulardancegenre.
Theselearningobjectivesincludestrengthandstamina,
technicalskills,musicalityandperformanceaswellas
focussingonfurtherskillsrequiredforemploymentinthe
sector,includingengagingwithanaudience.
Content Thisunitmaybetakeninthefollowinggenres:

Assessment
Theassessmentofthisunitisintheformofapractical
examinationwhichisassessedbyatrainedISTDExaminer.
Thepassmarkfortheunitis50%.Learnerswillhowever
beunsuccessfulif20%ofthemarksorbelowaregiven
foranyonecomponentor40%ofthemarksorbelowaregivenforanythreecomponentsregardlessoftheoverall
percentageachieved.
ThisunitmustbeachievedpriortotheUnit4examination
beingtaken.

examinationwhichisassessedbyatrainedISTDExaminer.
PleasebeawarethatUnit3mustbeachievedbeforethisunitmaybeexamined.
TheexaminationforUnit4lastsfor90minutesand
hasapassmarkof195outof300marks.Iflessthan40%
ofthemarksaregainedinoneormorecomponentsofthe
unitthelearnerwillbeunsuccessfulinthisunitoverall.
Thebreakdownofthemarksforeachcomponentof
theunitisgiveninasupplementarysheetforeachdance
genre.ThisisavailablefromtheProfessionalDevelopment
AssistantintheEducationandTrainingDepartment.
