    For conspicuousgallantry; he mounted hismachine gun under heavy fire and openedon the enemy. While doing so a shellburst near him, seriously affecting his eyes,but he stuck to his work and fired with goodeffect throughout th e action.1173 Serjeant J. Tyrie, Honourable Artil-lery Company, T.F.

    For consistent good work during a year'sactive service. He has shown himself to bea very capable and gallant N.C.O., alwaysvolunteering for any specially arduous ordangerous duty and carrying it out withgreat ability. During one important actionhis gallant conduct w as most marked.

    813 Serjeant H. Underwood, lst/4th Bat-talion, East Yorkshire Regiment, T.F.For conspicuous gallantry, whenhe carriedmessages to the advanced trenches, crawlingover an open space of 500 yards under heavyshell and machine gun fire.

    2168 Private H. Usher, lst/5th Battalion,West Yorkshire Regiment, T.F.For conspicuous gallantry.Usher remained at his postthe telephone office of hisHeadquarters when the frontbeen withdrawn on account of the enemy'sheavy trench mortars, shells bursting within10 yards of the line.

    9091 Serjeant F. D. Vant, 3rd Battalion,Coldstream Guards.For conspicuousgallantry, when he laid ane w telephone wire under a very heavy shellfire an d thereby maintained communicationat a critical moment.

    7443 Serjeant D. G. Vardy, 2 nd Battalion,Wiltshire Regiment.For conspicuous gallantry; he assisted tobring in a severely wounded m an under heavyfire. He displayed great bravery and abilityin commanding his platoon when left with-out officers.

    2026 Private W. J. Varney, 8th (City ofLondon) Battalion, The London Regiment(Post Office Rifles), T.F.

    For conspicuous gallantry; he displayedgreat bravery and ability as abomb-throweran d during a bayonet attack.

    4857 Battery Serjeant-Major C. F. Vass,Royal Field Artillery (attached 3rd SouthMidland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery,T.F.).For conspicuously good an d hard workthroughout the campaign. By his capacityan d energy he has invariably rendered thegreatest assistance, and has set a fineexample of devotion to duty on all occasions.

    7674 Company Serjeant-Major W. T. Vause,4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment.For conspicuous gallantry; he crawled towithin 2 0 yards of the enemy trench to recon-noitre, a distance of 250 yards. Next after-noon he crawled out again in broad daylight,and brought back useful information aboutthe wire. His fine example has had a great

    effect among the men. He has since beenwounded.

    8049 Lance-Corporal E. R. Vickers, 9tbBattalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.For conspicuous gallantry. As astretcher-bearer he displayed great braveryand resource in attending to and removingwounded, under heavy shell fire, from th ecommencement of the bombardment at4 a.m. until 9 p.m., when the regiment wasrelieved in the trenches.

    6111 Serjeant E. H. Vigars, 19th Hussars.For conspicuous gallantry as a despatchcarrier, when he carried messages betweenRegimental and Brigade Headquarters acrossan area which w as being heavily shelled, an dinvariably delivered his messages in theshortest possible time. His bravery anddevotion to duty were most marked.

    3714 Company Serjeant-Major E. Vinsoii,No. 1 Siege Company, Royal Monmouthshire,Roy a l Engineers (Special Reserve).For conspicuous1 all-round good work. Hewill go anywhere and do anything, and do itwell.

    For conspicuous gallantry; he showedgreat bravery and ability in the performanceof his work under most critical conditions,an d exposed to heavy shell an d rifle fire.
