Bookpacks and Bracelets We’re very excited to share two “kits” we’ve added to our children’s collection. One is Playaway Bookpacks, which allow you to read along with a book while listening to it. Bookpacks contain a set of books and the Playaway all-in-one audiobook in a clear hanging bag. They are a wonder-ful way to help reluctant or struggling readers, as well as those learning English as a Second Language. Some of the titles we’ve purchased are Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and More Stories, Strega Nona and Other Stories From Near and Far, and The Magic School Bus. You can find those titles along with more in the Children’s Room. They may be checked out for three weeks. Happy Read-ing! The second kit we’ve added is Rainbow Looms. Rubber band bracelets are all the rage with school-aged children and after a successful library program this past December, we thought it would be fun to allow patrons to make brace-lets at home. Each kit contains the book Totally Awesome Rubber Band Jewelry by Colleen Dorsey, a Rainbow Loom, and multi-colored rubber bands. These kits are available at the Reference Desk and may be checked out for three weeks. Pa-trons must pick them up and return them to the DCL; they may not be reserved. Happy Crafting!

I Want Candy Are you looking for something to do during Spring Break week? “Come with me and you’ll be in a world of pure im-agination” – at the DCL! We’re celebrating all things candy with “Sweets Week” at the library. On Monday, April 21 bring the entire family for Life-Sized Candy Land at 2pm. You become the game piece and the library is the game board. On Tuesday, April 22 celebrate Earth Day with us from 2:00-4:00pm with some eco-friendly crafts and by

making your own dirt cake. Yum! On Wednesday, April 23 at 2:00pm make some Candy Sushi – it’s like real sushi only without the fish! Our “Sweets Week” culminates on Thursday, April 24 with our Willy Wonka Party at 12:30pm. Dress up as your favorite character and enjoy crafts and more. You know we’ll have candy there! Finish off the week by joining us for a LEGO Ninjago Party on Friday, April 25 at 2:00pm. A sweet time will be had by all! We hope to see you at the DCL!

Terrific Thursdays The DCL’s program series specially designed for home-schooling families, “Terrific Thursdays”, introduces home-schoolers to Dewitt Community Library’s services and high-lights how families can use these resources in the home classroom. In March, “Terrific Thursdays” is all about Internet search-ing and safety on Thursday, March 20 at 11:30am. DeWitt Library staffers Marc and Scott share some tips and tricks on how to narrow your internet searches and harvest better result quicker. looks to the skies for an astronomical event. Social media and cyberbullying will also be discussed. Then in April, celebrate Earth Day! We all live on a planet that’s 70% water, but what does that water do when it’s not in our glass? Join us on Thursday, April 17 at 11:30am for a hands-on demonstration of the water cycle and learn about the importance of watersheds and how you can make an impact. Presented by Adrienne Canino from On-ondaga Earth Corps, a local group that empowers youth to be stewards of their community and environment.

- Emily Wormuth Children’s Librarian

Murder, Minecraft, and Mardi Gras Families and Teens will be excited about the next few events for them at the library. The DCL is bringing a bit of New Orleans to you on March 1

st from 2:00 – 4:00pm. Join

us and make an outlandish mask for our Mardi Gras party, then participate in games and great food. We will have tra-ditional King Cake, and of course parade beads to help celebrate. A new spin on our game nights will be a switch to Minecraft Mania. Play Minecraft and build together or on your own. The library will have accounts, or you can use your own. Join us on March 21

st from 6:00 – 7:30 for fun and refresh-

ments. Our Murder Mystery attendance has been hitting over 20. This popular event is fun for the whole family. Our last Mys-tery evening was a double murder, and two lucky people went home with movie passes as prizes for putting the right clues together. This quarters Murder Mystery evening is Friday, April 11 from 6:00 – 7:30. See you there!

DCL WELCOMES NEW OUTREACH LIBRARIAN

This Summer, the DCL will be offering a new online book club, The Cozy Chair.

Much like a traditional face-to-face book club, The

Cozy Chair discussions will offer more opportunities for everyone to share and chat about our favorite books. Currently, there are four groups planned for the initial launch, including Armchair Sleuths for mystery lovers, and Armchair Explorers for popular science readers.

Official book titles for each group will be revealed in

the 2014 Summer Program Guide. The library staff also will be distributing bookmarks in select books relating to Cozy Chair books. The bookmarks will contain infor-mation on signing up and participating in our online

groups. Keep an eye out for these bookmarks and more information about our online book clubs.

We hope to see you online, commenting, mingling, and sharing your reading experiences with fellow book-lovers.

Goodbye, Kelly B.; Congratulations, Maggie! The DCL is pleased to announce that Bonnie Foster has accepted the position of part-time Reference-Outreach Librarian. She will be replacing Kelly Burkett, who is leav-ing the area to pursue new adventures. Kelly’s last day at the Library is March 13, and we wish her all the best.

Bonnie Margaret Foster – affectionately known as Maggie to friends, family, and colleagues - found her passion for libraries one gloomy, rainy Sunday, when she decided to alphabetize her parents video collection. From there, she did books by subject (using her own vast, 9-year old judg-ment) and then by author.

Years later, she’s in a real library. Maggie realized that her true happiness lay in not just working in a library, sorting books and movies, but bringing the passion of the library to the patrons.

Bonnie, a former DCL Intern who is currently working with us as a Front Desk Assistant, has a BA in Literature and History from the University of Massachusetts and an MS in Library and Information Science from SU. During her time here at the DCL and in her role as part-time Assistant Chil-dren's Services Librarian at Hazard Branch, Bonnie has demonstrated her skills in assisting patrons at the front desk, offering reference services, and participating in programming for children and teens.

The DCL welcomes Bonnie in her new role.

The Friends of the DCL held its annual meeting on January 18th. At that meeting vacancies on the board were filled and a new slate of officers was elected for the year. New members of the board are Ray O’Connell, Shelly Field, Karen Fruehan, Jean Eschner , Helen Rezak and Pavlina Ivanova. New members give new life and ideas to any board, and we welcome the participation of these new Friends. The newly elected Board officers for the year include Larry Hoefler, President; Gretchen Roberts, Vice President; Sandra Abbott, Secretary; and Mike Kimber, Treasurer. The board is busy decid-ing on committee participation to manage the many community activities the Friends sponsor.

Remember that Friends members are very welcome to participate in these activities initiated by the board. There is always an opportunity to get involved, even in a small way. If you’re inter-ested in helping out please leave your name and contact information with the Front Desk staff at the Library to the attention of the Friends and you will get a return call. Date to remember…please reserve Saturday, May 18 at 2PM for the Friends Annual Tea—our annual fund raiser which features a speaker of local interest, refreshments and the company of like-minded people who enjoy an afternoon of ideas, insights and even a few laughs. Look for an announcement soon of this year’s speaker and then check your mail for your invitation and return request. Even if you can’t make the presentation, we welcome any contributions you can make to support the tea and the work of the Friends.
