by Randy CarlsenLast winter Ann
(Castner) Thompsondropped her daughter Alexoff at a friend’s house locat-ed adjacent to the futureHabitat for Humanity homebuild lot in Mantorville.Alex, 14, suggested to hermom that she put in anapplication for the homebuild.
Lo and behold theThompson family, consist-ing of Ann, Alex (14), Riley(11) and Sam (6) wereselected for the secondhome build in DodgeCounty. “That was a nicesurprise. The kids are reallyexcited, too,” said Ann, asingle mom.
The Dodge CountyChapter of Thrivent forLutherans is providing 55%of the financial support forthe home located at 704Sixth Street West inMantorville. JeremyHunze, financial associatefor Thrivent in Kasson, joined the organizationfour years ago. “I like thefact that they are faithbased and the organization is conservative in nature,” said Jeremy.
Another aspect of Thrivent Jeremy can appreciate is that they give back to the communi-ty. They do that in a big way by funding a percentage of the home build. There is also a lit-tle sweat equity in the form of volunteer work that goes into the project.
Nationwide Thrivent Financial for Lutherans awards grants to Thrivent affiliates. Thriventalso helped finance the home build for the first home built in Kasson. “I like what Habitatfor Humanity stands for,” said Jeremy. “They help families with a need and show them howto be responsiblehomeowners.”
Ann Castner gradu-ated from K-M HighSchool in 1991. Sheattended RCTC on afull scholarship withthe intent of becomingan elementary schoolteacher.
Ann met someonewhile going to schooland they were marriedsix months later. “I didthings a little back-ward and should havefinished school beforegetting married,” saidAnn.
The couple hadthree children andwere married 17 yearsbefore divorcing. Shecalled it a "messy"
divorce that was tough on her and the kids. As aresult of the divorce Ann had to file bankruptcy. Sheand her children had to move out of their home andrented a home in Kasson. Going through such a dif-ficult time in her life Ann said, "I always tried to bepositive."
Ann had a full schedule before the divorce andnow had even more on her plate with full responsi-bility for three children. She was taking classes atRCTC to earn an RN degree, was working at PrairieMeadows Senior Living in Kasson and being a par-ent to three young children. “There was not a lot offree time,” said Ann with a smile.
The RN program was scheduled to be completedin two years. Ann however was required to attendclasses around family and work and was attendedschool considerably longer than that. In Decemberof last year she passed the boards.
Along with work, school and family Ann had tofind time for 200 sweat equity hours and assist withthe home build. She said family donated 50 hoursand that helped a great deal.
Ann presently works days and nights and hasworked out a schedule with Mayo so she does nothave to work the 3-11 p.m. shift to be able to be athome with the children. Once they get settled intothe new home Ann said she would like to go back toschool next fall and get a masters degree so she hasmore opportunities for advancement.
“We are happy about moving into the newhouse,” said Ann. “It’s going to be nice to get backto a home in Mantorville we can call our own.”
Habitat for Humanity home builds are not con-sidered a handout. The partner family purchases thehome and pays off the mortgage with no interest rate(biblical financing). Along with the 200 hours of“sweat equity” (for a single parent) the family mustalso complete classes tolearn about indoor and out-door maintenance, budgetingand credit, crime safety, fireprevention, being a goodneighbor and more.
“The kids and I have gonethrough some really darktimes. We have stuck togeth-er and can now see a light atthe end of the tunnel, whichis getting closer and closerevery day,” said Ann.Welcome home Thompsonfamily!
Saturday, December 8there will be a dedication forthe Ann Thompson familyhome build at 3:00 p.m.“That is going to be a goodday for us,” smiled Ann. ForJeremy Hunze this project isone of the big reasons hechose to become an agent atThrivent Financial forLutherans.

Last April there was a groundbreaking for the Habitat forHumanity home build in Mantorville. Ann (Castner)Thompson is shown with her three children, Sam, Riley andAlex who are about to take the first shovel of dirt at theirfuture home.

December 9, 1949 a municipal liquor dispensary was establishedby adoption of Ordinance #402. Sixty three years later the KassonMunicipal Liquor Store remains a success story that has benefittedmembers of the community-even if they do not patronize the busi-ness.
Ordinance #402 provided for on and off sale of intoxicatingliquor and today continues as an off sale establishment, meaningliquor is sold only to take out and is not served on site.
The first location of the building was 2nd Avenue N.W., which isthe former Ron's Barber Shop (behind Kasson State Bank). Thebusiness then moved to 31 West Main Street in the early 50's ,which is now the location of Jimmy's Pizza. In 1979 the currentbuilding was constructed when a special election referendum wasapproved.
The Kasson Municipal Liquor Store is a perfect example of a citybusiness that gives back to the community. Profits benefit many different areas. "We doa lot of good things for the community with the profits," said liquor store manager CathyPletta.
Going back to 1983 here is a sampling of what some of the profits were used for: 1983-$50,000 for sewer collection system construction; 1989-$40,000 for a new grader; 1991-$35,000 for a new Pierce fire truck; 1992-$20,000 for public bathrooms, $15,500 dedicat-ed to economic development and $15,000 for a softball field; 1994-$50,000 toward pur-chase of a dump truck; 1998-$10,000 toward purchase of a police vehicle; 2000-$75,000for liquor store remodeling; 2003-$30,781 toward Main Street improvement project; and most recently in 2010 $10,000 wentfor LED Christmas lights and $40,000 for play equipment at Lions Park. Charitable donations are also made to KassonFestival In the Park and K-M Care & Share just to name a couple.
Cathy insists it is always a challenge to do business competing with the large volume and chain stores. However, she feelsthe Kasson Municipal Liquor Store has competitive pricing in most areas, has a good variety of beer, wine and liquor and isconvenient for local residents. A first this holiday season is the offering of pre-made and custom gift baskets for purchase.
Cathy is in tune with customer suggestions for stocking products not on the shelf and is always open to new ideas. Shesaid it is important to keep as much variety as possible on the shelves so when something isn't selling, it's off the shelf anda new product takes its place.
The good news about the Kasson Municipal Liquor Store is even if you don't frequent the business you benefit indirectlybecause profits stay in the community.
Kasson Liquor Store clerkJodi Benda and managerCathy Pletta show one ofthe select gift boxes forsale. The gift boxes aresomething new the liquorstore is selling this holidayseason.

Pertussis, known to most people as whooping cough, is back.Older generations remember the disease, in the era before wide-spread immunization, as a scourge among infants and small chil-dren that caused spasms of rapid, short, barky coughs interruptedby gasps for air. The swelling in the windpipe and voice box of thevictims gave a characteristic "whoop" sound to the inhalation fromwhich the disease gets its common name.
"Whooping cough would last for weeks. There was no effectivetreatment, and once in a while the swelling would close off thewindpipe or voice box completely, said Dr. Glenn Nemec, a familyphysician in Monticello, MN. "Unless the child was actually in thehospital when this happened, it frequently resulted in death."
That's why the pertussis vaccine was hailed as a near miracle. For many decades, the disease all but disappeared.
Unfortunately, that is no longer the situation. According to theMinnesota Department of Health, there have been 3,950 cases ofpertussis reported in the state this year. That's the highest numbersince the 1940s, before the vaccine was developed. So why is itback? Where did it come from again? The original vaccine was cre-ated using crushed pertussis bordtedella bacteria injected into themuscle in a series of 5 shots over the first Shears of life. It was veryeffective, but it caused a lot of sore arms, fevers, and occasionallymore serious reactions. Over the years, the vaccine has beenrefined so that there are fewer side effects. Today, anything morethan a day or so of mild soreness at the injection site and/or a low-grade fever, are almost unheard of.
The bad news - recent evidence shows that the modern vaccinestarts to wear off as soon as Shears after the last dose. By age 15, aperson only has 50% protection from the pertussis germ. and theprotection becomes less and less each year. This means that adultscan get pertussis fairly easily. Fortunately, (or perhaps unfortunate-ly) adults usually do not get very sick from pertussis.
Sometimes they will get the "100 day cough" where they feellike they will split a gut, but mostly it acts like a mild bronchitisand most patients never even get sick enough to seek care. If theydo go in, the symptoms are often so mild that pertussis is neverconsidered as a possibility. These adults then go out and cough oninfants and children who are too young to have completed a fullseries of shots, and now you have outbreaks of potentially fatalwhooping cough in infants and children, just like in the "old days.""On a positive note, supportive care for pertussis is much moreadvanced than in the past which means death due to the disease isvery rare," said Dr. Nemec. "That doesn't mean pertussis shouldn'tbe taken seriously. It's not unusual for patients to be hospitalizeddue to the illness and some even need to be put on ventilators(breathing machines)."
Today, there are rapid tests for the germ which help detect per-tussis in patients. There are also antibiotics that can decrease a per-son's chance of spreading the disease, but according to Dr. Nemec, antibiotics help little, if at all, to treat the symptoms of pertussis.
"Antibiotics are prescribed to decrease the chance of epidemicsand they are effective for that,” said Dr. Nemec They generallydon't help a patient feel better, but they do help make them lesscontagious." Experts have also learned that booster doses of pertus-sis vaccines for adults replenish their immunity to the disease.
So what can the average person do to help? First, have yourfamily physician check your shot record to see if you have had apertussis shot in the last 10 years. It is almost always given as acombination vaccine with your tetanus shot (a Tdap vaccine), butwas not routinely used until about five years ago. This is especiallyimportant if you are around infants or young children. Unvaccinat-ed adults often unknowingly spread the disease to kids aroundthem. By getting a vaccine when you are older, you are actuallyprotecting others. If your last tetanus shot didn't have pertussis in it.get a booster that does, even if you only had the shot a year or twoago Second, if you have kids. make sure they are all up to date ontheir shots. Third, if you have a severe cough, a cough that comesin spasms (cough 'attacks' interspersed with cough free intervals),or a cough that lasts over a week and is getting worse or not gettingany better, see your family physician and ask about pertussis. Ifyou have had close exposure for a prolonged time to someone whohas a positive test for pertussis, you should also call your doctor, asyou may be a candidate for preventive antibiotics.
"It is not likely we will ever exterminate pertussis," said Dr.Nemec. "But if everyone gets their shots, watches for the symp-toms and gets in early for testing, we can relegate whooping coughto the rare disease file."

The Coin Laundry opens in Kasson
Steve Gronseth purchased the Kasson Speed Wash June 1 and has since remodeledfrom floor to ceiling and opened The Coin Laundry.
Steve Gronseth ofRochester purchased theKasson Speed Wash June 1from John and Betty Brandli. He completely remodeled thebusiness from floor to ceilingand reopened last week underthe name of The CoinLaundry.
Steve began to look intothe possibility of purchasing alaundromat four years ago.He asked the Brandlis if theywere interested in selling andat that time they were not.Earlier this year they calledSteve and asked if he was stillinterested and he said "yes".
The business now has allnew electrical wiring andplumbing, new high pressuregas system, high efficiencyfurnace, central air, and newdoors and windows. The frontdoor has an automatic dooropener and the bathroom isADA compliant.
There are 16 new frontload state of the art washersand 16 dryers. There arefewer machines, but theyhave twice the wash capacityand the dryers have threetimes the drying capacity. Thewashers weigh the load anduse the correct proportion ofwater. The washers also havehot and cold soft water. Twoof the washers are giant load
machines for washing sleeping bags, comforters, quilts andother bulky items. "People use to wait up to an hour to use adryer. They won't have to do that any more," said Gronseth.
The Coin Laundry has a high definition television, WiFi,four folding tables with shelves, new seating, two changemachines and a small office. Steve also plans to have anaudio system up and running soon.
If a patron has a problem with a machine there are greentags with a place for name and phone number so the patroncan be contacted and receive a refund.
"The first words out of customers' mouths when they seethe new look is, 'Wow'," said Steve. "When I bought this Iwanted to do things right and I think we accomplished that,"he added.
The Coin Laundry is open 5 a.m.-11 p.m. seven days aweek, 365 days a year. The doors have an automatic lockingand unlocking system. Steve plans to have a grand opening inJanuary.
