Minnesota department of natural resources

Q: With snow just around the corner, folks are gettingready to ride their snowmobiles. What are the educationalrequirements for the legal operation of a snowmobile?

A: Current statute requires anyone born after Dec. 31, 1976to take a safety-training course before operating a snowmobileon public lands or waters. Two types of courses are available.First, for those 11-years-old and older, an 11-hour introducto-ry course designed for youth or the rider with little or no expe-rience, which includes hands-on training. Second, for those16-years-old and older, an independent study CD-basedcourse where students learn at home.

Once they have successfully completed their courses, stu-dents follow a path by age to receive a certificate of comple-tion from the DNR. Both these courses show students the mostcommon causes of snowmobile accidents in Minnesota, andhow to avoid them. Volunteers teach classes across the state.

Information regarding snowmobile certification classes can be found on the DNR's website at

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/vehicle/snowmobile.

Stevie Ersland owns You Knead Therapy in Byron and alsoteaches massage therapy at the Minnesota School ofBusiness. This month Stevie begins yet another challenge inher career as she starts a hospital based massage therapycourse/internship through the Mayo Clinic.

Stevie is one of nine massage therapists who will beginworking in St. Marys and Methodist Hospitals and the MayoClinic, along side clinic massage therapists. Mayo currentlyhas three in house massage therapists and another who focus-es on outpatient massage therapy. "I am looking forward tothe internship," said Stevie. Massage therapists from aroundthe country will be among those participating in the intern-ship.

A co-worker and mentor at the Minnesota School ofBusiness recommended Stevie for the program. She hasalready completed three weeks of online work and 40 hoursof classroom time at Mayo. The next phase, which beginsNovember 12, will allow her to work with a Mayo massagetherapist for a 25 hour period. The program is limited to 12students and offered twice a year.

Stevie said the hospital internship will give her a differentexperience in massage therapy since she will be working withpeople who have suffered injuries and are on different med-ications. "With someone who might have been injured, dif-ferent positioning for massage therapy is important," saidStevie. They will learn how to utilize massage therapy andincorporate that with medicine in a hospital atmosphere.

According to Stevie, there is more of a demand for mas-sage therapists in the hospital setting. "I'm excited to be in thefirst class," said Stevie. “This will give me a different per-spective of massage therapy in a health care setting.”

Stevie Ersland to begin internship in hospital massage therapy course

Bonnie Adams was offi-cially retired as the KassonPublic Librarian lastWednesday. A week agoThursday an open housewas held for Bonnie andJohn Talcott, president ofthe Friends of the Library, presented her with a recog-nition award plaque.

Had you always wanted to be a librari-an?

Yes. I loved books and the people thatworked in libraries. When I was a high schoolsophomore at John Marshall in Rochester, Iwas selected to work in the library with twogreat librarians who taught me library skills. Iworked in the high school library for the nextthree years and perfected my library skillsand at the beginning of my senior year I wasthinking about a future career and decided totalk with the librarians about being a librari-an. They told me I had the right aptitude to bea librarian so I decided to pursue a librarydegree at Mankato State University.

Do you ever think you would be a librar-ian for 39 years?

Yes I did. But, I did not know what type oflibrary I would serve. Over the past 39 yearsI have worked in 6-8. K-12, 7-12 schools,Arrowhead Regional Library System inWisconsin, Dodge Center Library Boardmember, and a public library. I feel I am oneof the lucky ones who was able to pursue mycareer for 39 years.

What do you like best about your job?Seeing all of our patrons on a regular basis

and helping them find the right book andteaching new skills. I really like meeting newpeople who have just moved to the Kassonarea and know the value of a library and itsservices.

Best experiences here in Kasson?Working for and being supported by the

Library Board of Trustees and the Friends ofthe Kasson Library. These two groups havebelieved in me and my staff and allowed us totry new ideas to better reach over 11,500 peo-ple in our service area.

Biggest disappointment? The lack of a larger facility for the KM

library service area during my time asDirector of Library Services. This communi-ty wants and needs a library that will matchtheir needs today and in the future. Librarysupporters need to advocate for the libraryand have their 15 second speech ready toinform those who do not know what a gemwe are and all of the services we provide.

What are you going to miss the most?Patrons, Library staff, Library Board and

the Friends of the Library and their friendshipover the past 8 1/2 years working at KassonPublic Library.

I think that Kasson is agreat place to live. There area number of organizationsthat help make it so, and Iwant to tell you about one.

The Kasson Chamber ofCommerce is an organizationmade up of people who havebusinesses in this communityand want to keep this town asvital as it is and insure growthin the future.

I think you would be surprised at the number ofevents that involve the Chamber.

They help pay for the lit Christmas decorationsthat line the main streets during the holiday season. They help sponsor The Care and Share Auction, which this year will take place on November 15th atEvents by Daniel’s, Saker & Schmitz. As in the past, the event will start with a dinner featuring spaghettiand meatballs beginning at 5:00 p.m. with the liveauction beginning at 6:00 p.m. The cost will be$10.00 for adults and children under 12 are $6.00.The proceeds go to those in need. The Chambersponsors Kasson Downtown Christmas with funactivities for all, including cookie decorating, color-ing and ornament making, with the highlight beingthe special appearance of the reindeer. All of thiswill be available in town on December 8th from10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Make sure to plan this as afamily activity as there will be fun for all ages.

It isn’t just Christmas. The Chamber sponsors theEaster Egg Hunt and Dollars for Scholars scholar-ships in the spring, and there is also bingo and theKasson Ambassador program during the Festival inthe Park in the summer.

Just as important are the contributions made bythese businesses to other organizations in town. Each year businesses are contacted by many todonate to worthy causes from school athletic orga-nizations to fundraisers for individuals and familiesthat need help. These members of the communityalways respond with monies or in-kind donations.Keep them in mind when you see their names in thelist of donors or on a sports program, especially thenext time you plan your shopping trips.

The Kasson Chamber continues to thank you foryour ongoing loyalty to local businesses which areneeded to provide the diverse number of profes-sional services, personal services and shopping vari-ties that Kasson has to offer.

Ask any resident of Dodge County about K-M Care & Share andmost of them could tell you about the organization and its fundrais-ing efforts, but do they realize that this organization has been serv-ing the K-M area for 30 Years?

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the birth of K-M Care& Share.  In a world where foundations are here today and gonetomorrow – K-M Care & Share has proven the test of time. Wethought it only fitting to sit down with the current K-M Care &Share Auction chair, Lisa Peterson to find out what this milestonemeans for the organization.

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the birth of K-MCare & Share. What does that mean to you as the Auctionchair?

I will say that in all the hustle and bustle of planning this year’sevent I was stunned to realize that this marks our 30th year.  Our

earliest records go back to 1982 which would indicate when K-M Care & Share came to bean “official” charity and driving force in this community.

As the Auction Chair, it fills me with pride that we (the auction coordinators past and pre-sent) have been able to keep this fundraising effort alive and thriving for so long.  Some mightsay that it’s a little sad that the need for such an organization exists - I don’t think of it thatway.  Instead I like to focus on the fact that over those 30 years there have been generationsof donors who have supported this effort and believed in helping their fellow neighbors.  Aslong as our donors continue to support our efforts, we will strive to help as many of our neigh-bors as possible.  Over the past 30 years, I can’t even fathom how many thousands of citizenswe have been able to help.

What are some of the significant changes K-M Care & Share has experienced overthose 30 years?

While I have only been Auction Chair for the past six of those years, I have heard storiesof the humble beginnings of the K-M Care & Share organization and how it all started as justa handful of local business people who gathered in the basement of the Kasson AmericanLegion with items they had made or purchased, auctioned them off to each other and raised afew hundred dollars here and there. At the time, I’m sure none of them imagined how far thisidea could go and how large it would become.  Today, we have moved to a much larger venuewith hundreds of items up for auction and raising on average $25,000-$30,000/year.

We owe our eternal gratitude to those founding members in the basement of the Legion fortheir generosity.  Without their kindness and concern for others we wouldn’t be the drivingforce we are today.

What do you attribute to K-M Care & Share’s long running success?Without hesitation, it’s the people.  The people of this community – those who donate,

those who bid, those who volunteer and those who do all three.  Every year there are count-less moments where I am struck with awe by the generosity of this community.  Charlie(Sinnwell) and I are humbled to be a small part of it and be surrounded by such talented, cre-

ative and generous people. They say every Auction chair leaves their mark, what is the mark you have made to

the  K-M Care & Share story? I think every Auction Chair over the years has “left their mark” in some way, shape or

form.  I came into this job with no experience (only having attended the auction one time) -and a passion to serve.  I would say my biggest concern at that time was breaking some of themolds or ideas that people had about K-M Care & Share.  So often I would hear that K-MCare & Share was “the Christmas  charity”, that statement really started to get to me becauseI wanted people to understand that while, yes, we did package holiday gifts and meals forfamilies we also provided assistance year round.

The first step I took in trying to break that mindset was by branding ourselves.  Up untilthis point we didn’t have a “face” to our name.  While people knew of us, there was no logoor branding to speak of that when you saw it you would immediately think: K-M Care &Share.  So we set to work producing brochures with our signature “paper people”.  Thebrochures focused on our mission and provided answers to the most commonly asked ques-tions by donors.  While many people had heard of us and had been supporting us for years,we would still field the same handful of questions from year to year so it became apparentthat we needed a way to communicate with our current donors as well as any potentialdonors.

The second phase was to realize that, like it or not, we are living in a digital age and whenpeople have questions - the first place they turn is the internet.  We needed to have a digitalpresence and with the help of a former K-M resident (Nicholas Dibble) we were able to cre-ate a website that covered everything in the initial brochure and so much more.  Nick showedus how we could feature our auction items so that donors could be recognized and bidderscould preview the merchandise prior to the event.

What is your hope or vision for the future of K-M Care & Share?Initially I would say my hope is that someday my four children will take on the task of

Auction planning (laughing). Already they have far more experience than I did coming into this job and over the years

there has been no shortage of program-related jobs for them.As an organization, my hope is that we can continue to have great success for another 30

years.  How we plan to do that is by staying current, moving with the times, communicatingwith our donors and recipients to identify needs and provide answers to their questions.  Onthe business side of things, I believe we need to expand our horizons and update our policiesand procedures to reflect the current size and scope of this program.  Encouraging involve-ment by more interested community members will ensure that we move into the future as avibrant, healthy and cohesive organization.

This year’s K-M Care & Share Auction will take place at EVENTS in Kasson, Thursday,November 15th, 2012 starting at 5 p.m.  The event will feature live and silent auctions, a raf-fle, dessert samples and much more, please plan to join us!

One day a customer complimented the barn wood trim aroundDeanna Kay’s Hair Styling remodeled salon in Dodge Center. Shesuggested owner Deanna Kvam rename the business The Hair Barn.Deanna liked the idea, especially since the barn wood came from abarn on her father’s farm.

Deanna Kay’s Hair Styling became The Hair Barn three weeksago. Located on Main Street in Dodge Center, Deanna said the namechange has been a little confusing for some customers. She did haveone ask if she moved the business out of town with the name change.“No way,” she said.

Deanna has been cutting hair for 33 years, 19 in her own shop. Shemade the move from West Concord to Dodge Center eight years ago.“This is always what I wanted to do and I still enjoy it,” said Deanna.

Jesse Phelps started recently at The Hair Barn and is a booth renterfrom Deanna. They do hair cuts, razor cuts, styling, color, highlight-ing, perms, tanning and waxing. They also sell a variety of hair careproducts. Monday from 9-2 Jesse offers $10 haircuts.

The building itself has an interesting history. It has been anythingfrom a jail to a municipal library. Deanna said upstairs there are stillbars on some of the windows.

Deanna could have possibly named her business the Jail BreakSalon or Book Rack Hair Styling, but the Hair Barn is a little moredown to earth and does have a special connection.

Deanna Kay’s now The Hair Barn

Jesse Phelps and Deanna Kvam stand by the new signthat shows the name change from Deanna Kay’s HairStyling to The Hair Barn.

The wood trim inside The Hair Barn is from an old barn

off owner DeannaKvam’s father’s farm.
