Material Handling IndustryThe Material Handling Industry relies on
Haldex knowledge and experience forapplications such as lift, tilt, power steer-ing and auxiliary functions on many typesof industrial lift trucks. These motor/pumpunits can be designed for pallet trucks thatrequire separate motor, pump and reservoirpackages. These units provide primaryhydraulic power for lifting and other func-tions.
They can also be designed for high reachstackers that require separate motor, pumpand reservoir packages as well. Theyprovide primary hydraulic power for lifting
and, under certain applications, can providesecondary power for fork carriage extensionor side-to-side shift operation.
Narrow aisle or 3-wheel sit down forkliftsalso typically require separate motor/pumpand reservoir packages. These units provideprimary hydraulic power for lifting and ve-hicle steering along with secondary powerfor fork carriage extension or side-to-sideshift operation.
Aerial Lift IndustryThe Aerial Lift Industry also relies onHaldex long history of success in apply-ing D.C. motor/pump assemblies for itsequipment. Our systems are well suitedfor auxiliary / secondary lowering re-quirements for off-highway vehicles, lift
platforms, or boom applications wherethe primary hydraulic source becomesnonfunctional or unavailable. They mayalso be used for minor jib or basketadjustments by the operator.
These motor/pump units are also de-signed for scissor and boom lift vehiclesas the primary power source. Theseunits provide hydraulic power to propel,raise and steer the vehicles.
Construction IndustryIn the Construction Equipment Industry,
we are called upon for assistance withtraction drive applications as well as thelift functions for aerial devices.
Also, many construction machinesrequire a supplemental source of hy-draulic power when the primary sourcebecomes nonfunctional or unavailable.Examples of these include large hoists,cranes and wheel loaders. Haldex D.C.motor/hydraulic pump assemblies areideally suited to meet these needs.
Haldex D.C. motor construction is also
well suited for applications in off-high-way equipment where the conditionsare harsh and rugged performance isrequired. For example, power units canbe constructed with heavy duty startswitches and insulated wiring boots.
The mating of a D.C. motor and hydraulicpump into an assembly and the applica-tion of these assemblies is dependent ona diverse set of variables. Each applicatiovaries in complexity. Complete knowledgof the unique characteristics of individualD.C. motors is essential and, of course,
expert knowledge of individual hydraulicpump performance is necessary. But themerging of D.C. motors and hydraulicpumps is a technology all its own. And, itis in this area that Haldex excels.

Permanent magnet motors generally run ata nominal speed of 1800 RPM (althoughother speeds are available). These motorshave a lower stall torque than wound eldmotors, but are more efcient and exhibit
superior thermal characteristics which makethem more suitable for continuous dutyapplications. Some of the most commonapplications of permanent magnet motorsare power steering and fuel systems.

MOTOR FEATURES OFFERED
MOTORS . . .Haldex offers an extensive range of D.C.motors from 12 to 48 volts. The two motordesigns that are incorporated in the major-ity of our applications are the permanentmagnet type and the wound eld type.Under these broad categories, there are
numerous combinations of voltages, framesizes and duty ratings available.
Permanent MagnetMotors with permanent magnet excita-tion are characterized by simple design.Because the magnetic eld is created bypermanent magnets, excitation of the mo-tor is constant under all operating condi-tions. The speed variation vs. torque willremain relatively consistent over the motorsoperating range.
Series Wound FieldIn Series-Wound Field motors, the excitationand armature windings are both electri-cally operated with the current passingthrough the armature. Series Wound mo-tors, therefore, develop high initial torquewhich decreases sharply as the motor speed
increases.
Wound eld motors are higher speed mo-tors which exhibit a very high stall torque.Their thermal characteristics are such thatthey can generate higher power levels forshort periods of time. Wound eld motorsare available with different duty ratings. AtHaldex these motors are classied as stan-dard duty (usually single terminal motor,totally enclosed non-ventilated (TENV), withsleeve type bearing and 4 inch diameter),medium duty (usually has ball bearingin rear housing, U.L. approved, totallyenclosed non-ventilated (TENV), 4 inchdiameter motor and duty cycle is somewhatlonger than standard depending on applica-tion) and heavy duty (usually 2 terminal,5 inch diameter motor, open ventilatedfan cooled (OVFC), exhibiting longer dutycycles, depending on application).
The above are distinguished by motordiameter or frame size, and the ability todissipate heat at different current levels overa specic time interval. In general, woundeld motors are used in applications wherethe loads are higher and greater speed isrequired but only on an intermittent basis.Wound eld motors are load sensitive andspeed will vary with the applied load; per-formance curves are required to determinethe output at a given point. Applicationsinclude lift functions on aerial devices andmaterial handling equipment as well asauxiliary power steering on constructionequipment.
Listed below are the standard features avail-able on Haldex D.C. motors. A brief expla-nation of these features is also included foreach section.
VoltageHaldex offers a full range of D.C. motor
capabilities from 12 to 48 volts.
Single or Double TerminalHaldex offers single terminal motors wherethe motor is internally grounded. Costsavings is achieved by eliminating additionalwiring. We also offer double terminal mo-tors where an external ground is required.
Several Sizes andConstructionWe offer the standard 4 inch diametermotors as well as 3 and 5 inch diameter.Available features include open drip proof,thermal protection and sealed designs.
Start SwitchesHaldex offers start switches which can bemounted in a variety of locations to suityour applications. We offer 3 terminal and4 terminal (U.L.) switches in heavy dutydesigns, with or without boots.
Various MountsHaldex offers a number of standard motormounting brackets and will work to meetyour specic mounting requirements.Shown here are foot mounts, pump/statormounts, and horseshoe mounts.
U.L. ApprovalHaldex can provide Direct Current electricmotors intended for use in the electric bat-tery powered industrial truck market. Thesemotors are intended to comply with therequirements of UL 583 for Type E, ES or EEindustrial trucks.

PUMP FEATURES OFFERED
PUMPS . . .The Haldex line of high quality castiron and aluminum bodied gear pumpsrange in size from .065 in. 3 /rev. to 2.40in.3 /rev. (1.06 to 39.32 cc) displace-ments. The two pump styles offeredare xed clearance and pressure bal-
anced. These two pump styles differ indesign and in the volumetric efciencythey exhibit under various conditions.
Choosing a Pump . . .Choosing the type of pump is determinedby a number of factors that are inter-related. The system pressure requirementmay completely dictate the type of pumprequired and the motor may have to besized accordingly. When the selection of a
pump type is not dictated, overall efciency(as it relates to choosing the most economi-cal D.C. motor and the cost of operatingthe vehicle) must be considered. In manycases, where high pressure, high duty cycleor low viscosity uid are not factors, a xedclearance pump is the most economicaldesign to use. These units are less expen-sive, and their volumetric efciencies at lowto moderate pressures are comparable topressure balanced pumps.
Volumetric efciency is the actualow a pump produces relative to thetheoretical (or maximum) ow it couldproduce if it had no internal losses.The two major leak paths that deter-mine volumetric efciency in a gearpump are between the gear tips andthe housing, and between the gearfaces and the housing. Reducing theleakage over the gear tips is a functionof being able to hold component partsto precise and exacting tolerances.We have demonstrated over manyyears that we have the equipment andexpertise to consistently provide therequired precision in the fabricationof the components used in our gearpumps.
To reduce the leakage between the gearface and the housing, the pressure balanceddesign has been developed. This designincorporates oating bearing blocks in thepump housing on the sides of the gear fac-es. As pressure is developed by resistanceto the pumps ow, it creates a hydraulic
force which tends to push the bearingblocks away from the gear faces. However,this force is balanced by an opposite pres-sure which is applied on the opposite sideof the block via a port behind the block. Asthe pressure level increases, the oppositepressure on the block increases to insurethat the clearance between the bearingblock and the gear face is the smallest pos-sible without creating excess friction whichwould effect the mechanical efciency ofthe pump. Pressure balanced pumps arewell suited for applications where lower vis-cosity uids, higher temperatures, or higher
pressures and duty cycles are encountered.
In applications where xed clearance pumpefciency is not adequate, the pressurebalanced design may be desired becauseof the higher volumetric efciency. Highervolumetric efciency on the pump side typi-cally results in faster machine cycle speeds.Cycle speed is important in most batterypowered mobile equipment applicationsbecause battery life is rated in amp./hours.The less time that amps are being drawnfrom a battery pack, the longer the batterypack will last before recharge or replace-
ment. In most applications, overall ef-ciency of pressure balanced pumps is higherthan that of xed clearance pumps. Theunderstanding of how the overall efciencyof a pump varies based on different applica-tion parameters is critical to the selectionof the optimum D.C. motor for a specicmotor/pump application. Haldex has manyyears of experience in this area.

GC SeriesFixed Clearance PumpsHaldex GC Series hydraulic pumps are high-efciency cast iron gear pumps designed for
reliability and long-life performance underrugged conditions. GC Series pumps arebuilt with cast iron bodies and hardenedsteel gears. They are suitable for use in awide variety ofapplications.
W SeriesPressure Balanced PumpsThe pressure balanced W Series hydraulicpump offers outstanding performance,exibility, high efciency, low noise perfor-mance and a variety of options to suit awide range of equipment needs. It features
a through-bore bushing type design con-struction.
Split Gear PumpsA Split Gear pump incorporates two gearsoffset by one tooth to obtain the desireddisplacement. By offsetting the teeth of thegears, the number of pressure pulses is in-creased and the magnitude of these pulsesis decreased; therefore, reducing any noisecaused by the pump.
Multiple PumpsMultiple pumps provide multiple hydraulic
functions from one power source at a sig-nicantly lower cost than separate pumps.Some can also be sealed between sectionsto allow for independent circuit operationwithout mixing hydraulic uids.
High/Low PumpsTwo-Stage High/Low pumps provide twosection ow for high speed positioning, andunload one section of the pump at a pre-determined pressure to provide a maximumworking pressure.
Pressure Balanced Pumps
This design incorporates oating bearingblocks in the pump housing on the sides ofthe gear faces. As pressure is developedby the pump, it creates a hydraulic forcewhich tends to push the bearing blocksaway from the gear faces. However, thishydraulic force is balanced by an oppositepressure which is applied on the block viaa port behind the block. As the pressurelevel increases, the opposite pressure on theblock increases to insure that the clearancebetween the bearing block and the gearface is at the smallest possible incrementwithout creating excess friction which would
decrease the mechanical efciency of the pump.
Adjustable Relief ValveHaldex external gear pumps are availablewith integral adjustable relief valves. Tam-per proof versions are also available.
Check ValveHaldex external gear pumps can incorpo-rate integral check valves. All Haldex checkvalves feature hardened steel seats.
Solenoid L-H-L ValveHaldex external gear pumps can incorpo-rate lift-hold-lower valve circuits, integral tothe pump housing and electronically actu-ated by either a 12, 24, 36 or 48 volt D.C.UL approved coils.
Unload ValveHaldex external gear pumps can be de-signed with an unload valve to optimizesystem performance and vehicle operation.
Solenoid w/Manual OverrideThe solenoid actuated valve option caninclude a manual override feature to allowfor manual actuation of the valve.
Load Sense ValveLoad Sensing is a hydraulic circuit congu-ration which allows the load, as sensed atthe control valve, to modulate pump outputin relation to system demand. Controllingboth ow and pressure at the pump allowsfor a signicant reduction in valving lossesand circuit inefciencies. This providesmany of the operational benets of a pistonpump with the performance, reliability andcost advantages of a gear pump.
SAE Side/Rear PortsHaldex standard porting is SAE (StraightThread O-Ring) side ports. This type of portoffers greater resistance to leakage andis more serviceable than other port styles.SAE rear ports are also available.
Inlet TubesOversized inlet tubes are available onHaldex pumps to ensure proper ll and uidinlet conditions.
Drive Systems . . .The other critical element to be consideredwhen specifying a D.C. motor/pump unitfor your application is the drive system.Drive system failure is known to be asignicant problem in many D.C. motor/ pump applications today. Haldex has boththe product and a wealth of applicationexpertise in this area to ensure that yourD.C. motor/pump unit incorporates thecorrect drive system for your applicationrequirements. The following descriptionsdene the four (4) drive systems available
for Haldex D.C. motor/pump units.
Tang Drive SystemA .171 wide tang for GC pumps and a.244 wide tang for PB (Pressure Balanced)pumps are the most durable standard tangdrives offered. These wider tangs providegreater tang / shaft engagement, therebyreducing the play between the shaft andtang. Reduced play results in reduced wearof the tang during motor starts and longerdrive system life.
Extended DutyTang Drive SystemFor higher duty cycle or high torque ap-plications, we have developed the Haldexextended duty tang drive. This innovativedrive reduces axial play between tang andshaft to a minimum by means of a wavewasher placed behind the ball bearing onthe shaft. This washer keeps a constantspring load on the shaft to ensure maxi-mum tang engagement at all times.
Flexible CouplingDrive SystemThis drive system eliminates all metal tometal contact by means of a rubber spiderwhich engages inside two metal couplinghousings. The material Haldex has selectedfor its exible drive coupling exhibits superi-or resistance to deformation and wear. Thissystem provides maximum torque transferand quiet operation and is primarily usedfor continuous duty applications.
SAE 9 Tooth Spline
Drive SystemThis drive system allows for direct pump/ motor spline connection to distribute highertorque and duty cycle operation with lowernoise levels emitted from the pump/motorcombination.

Auxiliary Power Units
These pump and motor power units are designed for applications requiring auxiliary hydraulic pow-er. Typical applications are for truck, mobile crane and boom equipment. These power units arewell suited for auxiliary / secondary lowering requirements for off-highway vehicles, lift platforms,or boom applications when the primary hydraulic source becomes disabled or nonfunctional. Theymay also be used for minor positioning adjustments by the operator.
Unit complexity can range from a simple pump and motor unit without any valving, to units that in-corporate pressure holding check valves and over-pressurization protecting relief valves. Units rangein size from light duty 3 inch motors to medium duty 4.5 inch motors.

These pump and motor units are designed for scissor and boom lift vehicles for primary power ap-plications. These units provide hydraulic power to propel, raise and steer the vehicles. Pumpingrequirement may be provided for by single or multiple sections. The pump may be supplied with atube inlet or other standard inlet porting. Electrical D.C. motors may be provided in 24, 36 or 48volt combinations.
