workers,andcitizensworktogethertoidentifyandcontaininfectiousdiseaseoutbreaks.CasestudiesofHIV/AIDS,Ebolavirus,andinfluenzahighlightthesocialandemotionalfalloutofoutbreaks—forvictims,theirlovedones,andsocietyoverall.ObjectsfromboththeNationalMuseumsofNaturalHistoryandAmericanHistoryillustratetheimpactsofepidemics.

PleasejoinusonTuesday,October30,2018at6:00p.m.wherewewillbegintheeveningwithaperformancebytheDanaTaiSoonBurgessDanceCompany,thefirstandonlyresidentdancecompanyattheNationalPortraitGallery.Followingthedanceperformance,wewillenjoyatalkbyPortraitGalleryCuratorAsmaNaeemabout“BlackOut:SilhouettesThenandNow,”anexhibitionthatexplorestherelativelyunstudiedartformofsilhouettes—cutpaperprofiles—whichwereahugelypopularanddemocraticformofportraitureinthe19thcentury.DanaTaiSoonBurgess,theNationalPortraitGalleryChoreographer-in-Residence,and
hiscompanywillrespondto“BlackOut”inapoignantmoderndanceworkwithvideobydesignerKellyColburn.WewillbeinattendancebythespecialinvitationoffellowPhiBeteandcompanydancerChristinArthur.Weencourageattendeestoarriveearlytotakealookattheexhibitionpriortothescheduledevent.Silhouettesofferedvirtuallyinstantaneouslikenessesofeveryonefrompresidentstothosewhowereenslaved.Theexhibitionexaminestherichhistoricalrootsofthisartformandconsidersitsforcefulcontemporarypresence.TheshowfeaturesworksfromthePortraitGallery’sextensivecollectionofsilhouettes,suchasthosebyAugusteEdouart,whocapturedthelikenessesofsuchnotablefiguresasJohnQuincyAdamsandLydiaMariaChild,andatthesametime,theexhibitionrevealshowcontemporaryartistsarereimaginingsilhouettesinboldandunforgettableways.Highlightsofthehistoricalobjectsincludeadouble-silhouetteportraitofasame-sexcoupleandararelyseenlife-sizesilhouetteofanineteen-year-oldenslavedgirl,alongwiththebillofhersalefrom1796.ThefeaturedcontemporaryartistsareKaraWalker,whomakespanoramicsilhouettesofplantationlifeandAfricanAmericanhistory;CanadianartistKristiMalakoff,whocutspapertomakelife-sizesculpturesdepictingachildren’sMaypoledance;MacArthur-prize-winnerCamilleUtterback,whowillpresentaninteractivedigitalworkthatreactstovisitors’shadowsandmovements;andKumi

2018PBKTriennialCouncilTheTriennialCouncilisPhiBetaKappa'slegislativebody,whichconveneseverythreeyearstoconductSocietybusiness.PhiBetaKappaexecutives,senators,andrepresentativesfromtheSociety’schaptersandassociationsmeettocharternewchapters,electnewleadershipforthefollowingtriennium,anddiscusspoliciesaffectingtheSocietyasawhole.The45thTriennialCouncil tookplace inBoston,Massachusetts fromAugust2-5,2018.ThePresident,NinaKuo,andExecutiveCommitteeMember,LizMarshall,attendedonbehalfoftheDCAssociation.Bestpracticeswereexchangedinbreakoutsessions,andNinahadthechancetospeakaboutthesuccessesofourmentorshipprogramandYoungProfessionalsnetwork.DelegatesalsovotedtoestablishchaptersatChapmanUniversity,LoyolaMarymountUniversity,MississippiStateUniversity,andTheUniversityofSouthFlorida.TheDCAreaPhiBetaKappaAssociation’s effortswerealsohonoredwithanOutstandingAssociationAward. AugustBookClubMeetingOnTuesday,August28,eighteenmembersof thebookclubmettodiscuss Naomi Alderman'sThe Power. This work of speculativefictionportraysacontemporaryworldwherewomenaresuddenlyaffordedthephysicalupperhandovermen,viaanabilitytogenerateand wield electricity. The novel follows the trajectories of fourwomenandonemanoverseveralyearsas thisnewgenderpowerdynamicplaysoutinvariousculturalcontextsacrosstheglobe.Asagroupwediscussedthemanyquestionsraisedbythetext,including:whatismeanstobeawoman,theeffectsofpoweronthepsyche,andwhichcharacters,ifany,reacted/adaptedwelltothenewreality.Despitesomeissueswiththenovel'sprose from a literary perspective, the portrayal is a fascinating and uncomfortable one, perfect fordiscussion.NationalBookFestivalTripOnSaturdaySeptember1,sevenmembersofthebookclubmetindowntownDCforbreakfastfollowedbya trip to theNationalBookFestival at theConventionCenter. Speakers included theauthorofourSeptemberselectionTheLineBecomesaRiver,FranciscoCantu,MadelineAlbright,andTaraWestover,authorofEducated,recommendedbyformerPresidentObamaasasummer2018pick.ThiscoordinatedtriptotheBookFestivalisarecurringannualinformaleventforthebookclub,asiteasilyallowseveryonetotailortheexperiencetotheirowninterestsafteraquickmeetandgreetbeforehand.
