I am so glad to have been selected as one ofthe first bloggers for DCMilitaryLiving. I hope toreach out to as many folks as I can and engagesome followers over the coming months. Themain topic that I intend to write about is how canmilitary families save here and there and cutsomecosts, mainly on travel andday-to-day living.Whether it's toget abargain, look for specials on

everyday items or travel, tell a great story, or evenmake a few dollars, everybody loves a great deal.Let me tell you a little about myself: My name is

Lisa Allen. I am married to a retired Navy com-mander (aviation/fighter guy); have worked in thetravel industry (my vocation and ad vocation);livedandworkedoverseas in anembassy "far, far"away (hints to follow); and I love dogs—the bigger

and more "mixed," the better. I love, love, love tothrift nomatter where I go and I am pretty good atit. My latest find: a lightly used commercial-gradefood processor for $20—new retail price $499. Itneeded a small part that cost $20 and it’s workingperfectly! The D.C. metro area has some greatthrift shops, some even with a daily military dis-count. My upcoming blog will introduce some ofthose places.Let's take another example everyonehasexpe-

rienced: Have you ever wondered why your air-planeseat costs significantlymore (or less) than thefolkssittingaroundyou?(Icanhelpyouwith thatandmaysaveyousomemoney.)Are therebest times tobuy or better ways to route yourself in order tosave?Anumberofyearsago, Iplannedatrip toZim-

babwe via London and the ticket price was quitehigh, but I was determined to afford it. So instead ofbuying one ticket all the way through, I bought twoseparate tickets New York to London (ticket one)and London to Harare, Zimbabwe (ticket two) andsavedmore thana thirdof theprice.Thedrawback?I had to claimmybags in London and then recheckthemonto Zimbabwe. Simple really! To keep you guessing and engaged inmy blog,

here are my "far, far" away hints: Z land, portsgalore, is the table set?, wine anyone???, so longseparated—can anyone guess where in the worldthe military took me?Until my very first blog, God bless our troops all

over the world, keep them safe and bring themhome soon. Talk to you real soon.

Wishyoucould talk toothermilitary familymem-bers living locally who face someof the sameday-to-day challenges you do, such as where to sendyour child to school, how to increase your mar-ketability when job hunting or how to find greatshopping deals?Check out DCMilitaryLiving.com, the new, local,

online community hosted by Comprint MilitaryPublications. The website lets you chat, createforums for discussions, offer advice, give advice, post photos, find events happening locally andsimply stay in touch with other military families inthe greater Washington, D.C., area.On DCMilitaryLiving.com, you’ll find useful

I met my cute hubby on a blind date atFort Campbell in 1999. Somehow wehave remained with the 101st this entiretime. We married in 2001, had cutienumber one in 2002 and cutie numbertwo in 2005. Chaz’s Army adventureshave taken him to Kosovo, Korea, Iraq,Afghanistan and all over our greatnation, but he had never been to D.C.until last year.On Jan. 22, 2011, I had to hear the

words no Army wife wants to hear. It’samazing how I can still hear them today—“Mrs. Allen, while your husband was on adismounted patrol in the Zhari district ofAfghanistan he stepped on and detonat-ed an IED. From the battlefield report, weknow he lost both legs and one arm isseverely damaged. We do not have any

more information to add at this time. Wewill need to knowwhere youwill be for therest of the day in case we must make aformal notification.” Over a year has goneby and I can remember sitting at my deskand hearing those words so perfectly. Iam so blessed because the secondphone alerted me that he was stable andwas safely in KAF (Kandahar Airfield) andin surgery. The next few days were filled with

phone calls providing more details andfinally the answers on what was next. Onthe evening of Jan. 25, my husband Chazarrived at Walter Reed Army MedicalCenter and I joined him the next day. That’s when our D.C. journey began. When this adventure started, I spent oneweek in D.C. caring for my husband andone week in Tennessee in our home car-

ing for our girls. Chaz was too gravelyinjured and our girls needed to keep theirlives as normal as possible because weknew we would have to uproot them andbring them to D.C. soon enough. Thanksto our amazing family and friends I wasable to accomplish thismission. Chazdis-charged to outpatient status at WRAMCinMay, andwhen the school year was fin-ished, I brought the girls to live with us inD.C. and really began our journey to the“new normal.”Over thepast year, heand I have turned

our journey to the “new normal” into a funadventure for our family of four. I will blogabout our adventures as a woundedwar-rior family in the nation’s capital. I hopeyou will follow along and enjoy some ofour adventures.

Feeling your skin being gently warSplish!Splash! The Pools are open!Feeling your skin being gently warmed by the

sun…smelling a slight hint of chlorine as it rides thearomawaveof coconut infused sunscreen… yourmp3 player serving up your most favorite tunes…what could be better? In the summer, notmuch! As of May 31, the pools at the Joint BaseMyer-

Henderson Hall Officers’ (specifically on FortMyer, VA) have been open and full of people andsummer activity! People of all ages have beencoming to the club to enjoy the crystal blue cool-ness offered in one of our three pools.“It’s like people have beenwaiting all year to get

back in the water!” said Christina Darensbourg,Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation BusinessOperations and Community Recreation Officer.“We’re enjoying a great season so far and it’s onlygoing to get better!”Darensbourg is no doubt referring to the pools

long list of water aerobics, swim stroke classes, and pool themed special events. And this year, with the Community Club pool being closed, theOfficers’ Club pool will be busier than ever toaccommodate thoseswimmers looking for apool. The pool is now also open to all Federal govern-

ment employees. The Fort Myer Officers’ Clubswas established as military membership clubs foractive and retired commissioned officers of theU.S. Armed Forces and DoD civilians of a corre-sponding pay grade (GS-7 and above, or equiva-lent). However, through an exception to policy, allarea Federal Employees can now enjoy the bene-fits and services our Clubs previously authorizedforonlyDoD IDcardholders. Theexception topol-icy does not apply to Army Community Service, our Fitness Centers or Child Care Centers.

With people taking advantage of the newexception to policy, “We’re happy to say our pop-ularity has increased,” saidDarensbourg. “Peoplewho have always wanted to use the pool butcouldn’t because of membership restrictions arevisiting us for the first time and really enjoyingthemselves. It’s great to see!”For the health and fitness minded, the Officers’

Club pool offers Deep Water and Shallow Waterwater aerobics. Both water aerobics classes arelow impact (which is great for your joints!) andpro-vides a total bodyworkout using dumb-bells, noo-dles, kickboards, floatation device and waterresistance. Both classes are great for all fitnesslevels. Darensbourg advocates water aerobicsclasses because participants can enjoy the coolwater while they workout. “…the best of bothworlds,” Darensbourg said. Water aerobics class-es start June 18 and cost $3 per class. For the serious swimmer to-be, the club offers a

kids’ stroke and turn clinic. The clinics focus onelements of competitive swimming and aredesigned for the summer season competitiveswimmer who wishes to improve their skills. Drilland skill work is emphasized during the hour longsession. Each session will focus on the techniqueand refinement of skills for one stroke to help par-ticipants achieve their goals.
