Diplomatic Missions and International InstitutionsEnvironmental Performance, Climate, and Sustainability Pledge

WHEREAS , the Government of the District of

Columbia is committed to protecting public health andthe natural environment in the city through numerous

programs and initiatives; and

WHEREAS , Mayor Vincent C. Gray has designatedadvancing sustainability in the District of Columbia asa strategic priority and has established the goal of making the District of Columbia the most sustainable

city in the United States; and

WHEREAS , the Government of the District of Columbia and the District’s Diplomatic Missions and

International Institutions recognize the importance of promoting sustainability practices, includingincreasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse

gases to combat climate change; and

WHEREAS, the Diplomatic Missions andInternational Institutions in the District of Columbiaare committed to being good stewards of the

environment and recognize the opportunity to takeadditional meaningful and measurable steps todemonstrate environmental leadership; and

WHEREAS, the Diplomatic Missions andInternational Institutions in the District of Columbiaare collectively committed to aiding the District’s

efforts to be the most sustainable city in the UnitedStates:

NOW, THEREFORE , the signatory members below hereby join the District of

Columbia Diplomatic Missions and International Institutions Environmental

Performance, Climate, and Sustainability Pledge committing to efforts that will fulfill the

goals outlined below.

The signatories of this Pledge hereby agree to form a partnership within the DC Greening Embassies Forum between the District’s Diplomatic Missions and

International Institutions and the District Government to pursue and promote programs, policies and projects aimed at advancing environmental quality, economic vitality and

social equity in the District of Columbia.

Encourage its local workforce to make use of the city’s

mass transit system, carpooling and eco-friendly modes of transportationStrive for a more eco-friendly and fuel efficient vehicle fleet

Strive to reduce potable water consumption and

stormwater runoff

Strive to reduce landfill waste and improve landfilldiversion

Strive to have cleaning supplies, programs, and procedures

that comply with relevant eco-friendly standards such asEPA-Energy Star, USDA or LEEDStrive to have ongoing consumable and durable goods

purchases that comply with relevant eco-friendly standardssuch as EPA-Energy Star, USDA or LEED

Contribute to the community of the District of Columbiaby supporting forums, workshops, symposiums and otherevents aimed at exchanging policy, research and best

practices on environmental performance, climate andsustainabilityStrive to work with and contribute to the District’s effortsto educate the area’s youth in environmental sustainability

Encourage facilities management and staff to gain

knowledge of best practices and environmental, building,and energy sustainability certification

Contribute, when able, to periodic sustainability performance metrics for city-wide reports

Contribute, when able, to the District’s efforts to

benchmark the energy and water performance of all majorbuildings within the cityEstablish institutional mechanism(s) for advancing and

achieving the commitments in this PledgeParticipate in forums and meetings to share and update

progress made towards the goals outlined in this Pledge.
