DBS FOUNDATIONNEWSLETTER Autumn 2014
“advance, enhance and promote all aspects of education for generations to come”
In our almost century and a half of history we have come a long way from humble roots and built
an institution with a legacy that spans all corners of Hong Kong and the world. Along the way
we have faced great challenges and even struggled for survival, yet thanks to the BONDS OF
BROTHERHOOD AND THE LIFELONG IMPACT OF A DBS EDUCATION, our old boys, faculty and
friends have helped us to continue to nurture generations of men who contribute to global society.
This year’s 145th anniversary also marks the establishment of the DBS Foundation and its endowment
and annual giving programme, which is set up to ensure that DBS will continue to have the funds
available to advance, enhance and promote all aspects of education for generations to come. With
these additional resources our boys will have the opportunity to expand their vision, pursue their
dreams and drive towards fulfi lling these aspirations, regardless of their personal and family fi nancial
circumstances.
We hope that this newsletter will be a useful platform to keep the DBS community updated about the
Foundation, to rediscover DBS history and reminisce on shared memories. We greatly appreciate
the support of the DBS community in celebrating this year’s 145th anniversary and look forward
to meeting you at our events. We hope you will enjoy reading this edition of the DBS Foundation
Newsletter. Stay tuned for our next issue.
A legacy that spans all corners of Hong Kong and the world.
MESSAGEFROM THE HEADMASTER
Headmaster, Mr. Ronnie Cheng (Class of 1983)
“provide a holistic education to students regardless of background and perpetuate the School’s heritage”
DBS FOUNDATION:ADVANCINGTHE DIOCESAN SPIRITFOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
3. Endowment Funds: Best suited for donors planning to make a fi xed fi nancial contribution,
the endowed amount may be used towards (at the choice of the donor) supporting the general
purposes of the Foundation or specifi cally in support of particular initiatives such as FACULTY
AND CURRICULUM, FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIP, SCHOLASTIC LEADERSHIP,
and SPORTS AND MUSIC. Endowment funds will be wholly retained as capital and only its
investment yield would be utilised, thereby assuring the long term sustainability of the funds.
Looking to the future, 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of DBS. To commemorate this signifi cant
milestone, the DBS Foundation will launch the “150 YEARS & BEYOND” campaign in November
2014, with the goal of raising HKD 200 million over a 5-year period. Interested donors will be able to
pledge support through three major streams:
1. Events: DBS Foundation organizes annually a variety of fund raising events, inviting old boys
and the greater DBS community to participate in fun activities, with proceeds to be used to
achieve the Foundation’s goals.
2. Annual Giving: For those who wish to donate on a more regular basis, the annual giving
programme, which entails monthly contributions of a fi xed amount, provides more flexibility
and convenience.
The generosity of donors will be a true demonstration of the DBS community’s dedication and shared
vision. The Foundation’s goal is to provide a strategic and important supplement to the School’s
operating budget each year, and thus ensuring the best possible educational experience for current
and future DBS students.
All over the world endowment funds are typically set up to secure the long-term fi nancial stability of
non-profi t institutions such as schools, colleges and other charitable organizations. To take as an
example, the most prestigious American universities, such as Harvard (US$32 billion), Yale (US$20
billion) and Princeton (US$18 billion) all benefi t from substantial endowment reserves. This is not
only limited to universities. Across the world, top-tier secondary schools are increasingly relying on
generous endowments in order to attract students and fund learning programmes. In fact, there are
suggestions that GRADUATES FEEL MORE LOYALTY AND GRATITUDE TOWARDS THEIR
SECONDARY SCHOOLS THAN TO THEIR UNIVERSITIES and thus more willing to pledge larger
amounts in support.
WHY ENDOWMENT FUNDS?
“I envisage that the DBS Foundation can help further DBS's ability to develop our students and the campus, to progressively and positively impact the world around us.” - Alex Tam, DBS parent
Endowment funds and ongoing external fi nancial support can also provide DBS with the autonomy
to develop and provide the best facilities, educators and opportunities for its students. According
to Headmaster Ronnie Cheng, DBS is dedicated to nurturing future contributors who can SERVE
AND LEAD SOCIETY. These additional funds will enable the School to strengthen (i) the equipment
and resources available for student learning (ii) the teaching capabilities of faculty and staff (iii) the
implementation of the latest education technology and (iv) to participate in more artistic and musical
performances and sporting events.
Since the start of DBS Foundation fundraising activities, close to HK$ 90 MILLION HAS ALREADY
BEEN GENEROUSLY PLEDGED by a number of donors providing evidence of the DBS community’s
commitment.

“I made a donation to the Foundation Fund because I love DBS and I know my school needs help. I have contributed to every DBS fund raising effort ever since I became fi nancially independent. I hope more DBS alumni, parents and friends can help out too.” - Anonymous, DBS old boy and parent
"flourish independently with the best facilities, educators and opportunities for its students"

After graduation, DBS students become ‘old boys’ and start their own individual journey. But as every
one of us knows, once a Diocesan, forever a Diocesan. In 2014 DBS Foundation organized various
events including a DBS Fund Run, the Chinese New Year Fair and the Homecoming Concert. These
events are ideal occasions for the DBS community to re-acquaint, reunite, and reminisce.
