1 August Meeting: The Iowa Show by Dick Belcher and our Ornaments Contest. The International Wood Carvers Congress is a big show, with seminars and a big contest. Dayton Carvers guild members did quite well in that contest. At our August meeting Dick Belcher will relate what went on and tell us about the carvings. Our August meeting is the last before Artistry in Wood. We will wrap up acquiring carved ornaments to be raffled at the show. We’ll have an ornaments contest with accolades and prizes. We need a lot more ornaments for our tree at Artistry in Wood. Carve a bunch and bring them to the August meeting. When the chip carver got his bill at Marion’s it sounded like a tomcat being neutered without anesthesia. Join us if you can for an enjoyable lunch at high noon on the first Wednesday of each month. It’s at Marion’s North Piazza, which is at 3443 North Dixie Drive in Dayton. The pizza’s not half bad. (That’s high praise where I come from.) The 2017 Buckeye Roundup Date Save this date. The 2017 Buckeye Woodcarvers Roundup will run from July 19th through the 22nd. Their 2016 Roundup was great. Heartfelt thanks to the “doers” who made it all happen. Indiana Woodcarvers Summer Camp It’s in East Bremen, Indiana and it will run August 11 through the 14th. Classes will include chainsaw, bark, relief, pyrography, fishing lures, decoys, birds, gourds crafts and others. Do a web search for more info (I couldn’t get their website to load) or a Facebook search. Show Chairman Caren Brown may be reached at 616.706.9685 .

Alkyd or Acrylic or What? Alkyd finishes are oil-based. Varnish and boiled linseed oil are alkyd finishes. Alkyd comes from the words alcohol and acid, the chemicals used to treat an oil, like soy bean oil, to make it cure to a hard surface. Urethanes are actually plastic. Some might be nearly as good as varnish. But, oil finishes are a different group. Oil finishes include mineral oil, raw linseed oil, walnut oil, real tung oil and teak oil. They don’t cure and they are not as hard as alkyd finishes. Evaporative finishes dry by, of course, evaporation. Shellac and lacquer are evaporative finishes. They dry to a hard surface but they do not have the water, alcohol and scratch-resistance of alkyd finishes. Latex finishes are water-based. They are scratch-resistant, more like varnish but less heat, water and alcohol resistant, like lacquer and shellac. Some are good. Acrylic finishes are water-based. What you buy may not be what the label says. A finish labeled as an exotic oil might be diluted varnish, which can be a good finish but it’s not that oil. And, some more highly promoted finishes (polyurethanes) have the merit for the manufacturer of being cheap to make.

July Show & Tell Don Mertz owned the lucky ticket and he chose a carving knife. It’s kind of a curious-looking knife because there is a groove in the upper side of the blade so you may use your thumbnail to pull the blade out of the handle. But the blade does not fold into the handle! Dick Belcher got a batch of pocket knife blades (blades only) from Schrade Cutlery and he made these into carving knives. There is an active market for vintage Schrade knives (photo above) on eBay.

  • Volunteers Needed for Artistry in Wood We need every hand helping at AIW. This newsletter is too early to list who is working which time slots and which are vacant. So, I will just list who is handling each activity with his or her phone number. Please call them and tell them when you will work. Do it now. Get your relatives and friends to help also. Remember, working as a volunteer gets you free admission for that day. • Information Desk – Jan Fader, 937.277.8733 • Door Ticket Takers (Actually, you just see if they wear an admission wrist band.) – Bruce Henn, 937.667.8590, cell 937.308.1325 • Club Table – Betty Meehan, 937.277.2237 • Silent Auction – Norma and Bruce Henn, 937.667.8590, cell 937.308.1325 • Raffle Table – Sandy and Bill Gordon, 937.429-9828
