In the space of a few delightful hours you can go from what feels like the ‘back of beyond’ on the Burke and Wills Track near Lancefield to wine tasting at welcoming cellar doors, then be back in your ‘host’ village in time for dinner.

In fact, the most difficult decision about touring within the region is working out where to begin. Wind your way from Melbourne to the spa centre of Hepburn Springs and Daylesford via the township of Malmsbury, home to an imposing National Trust-listed viaduct over the Coliban River.

Stop at historic Kyneton and explore the fine eateries set within magnificent 19th century bluestone buildings. Or pack a picnic and enjoy the tranquillity of Kyneton Mineral Spring and Reserve.

Continue through beautiful countryside to Lancefield. This attractive town of understated buildings, fine gardens and monthly farmers’ markets has all the character of a classic Victorian farming town. Nearby Mount Macedon boasts quaint food stores, outstanding nurseries and lavish mansions set amid exotic gardens and expansive native forests.

Unearth more history in Kilmore, Victoria’s oldest inland settled town, and be charmed by the evocative streets of Woodend. This Victorian resort town dates back to the heady gold rush days of the 1850s and is the gateway to the regions scenic superstar, Hanging Rock, and the quiet village of Trentham set snugly against the fringe of the Wombat State Forest.

Speaking of snug, check out Creswick Woollen Mill, home of fabulous locally-made clothes, blankets and other cosy items.

Any drive in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region is replete with food, wine, arts and cultural experiences. Drive to the bewitching Hanging Rock Reserve. Visit artist studios, enjoy wine tastings at cellar doors and chat with locals in historic goldfields pubs. Stop at farm gates and stock up on fresh local fruit and vegetables, even eggs laid by organic fed, free-roaming hens.

Sleepy, sun-dappled roads meander through landscapes that change like the light. Soft rolling hills, wooded dales and crop-threaded farmlands give way to villages rich in history. For natural escapes, few scenic drives match the winding routes through the 2,427ha Macedon Regional Park which dominates the skyline at the western end of the Macedon Ranges.

Spot wildlife throughout the park, even in the shady picnic grounds which are connected by the Macedon Ranges Walking Trail. Leave the car and step out on the recently-constructed Forest Eco-tourism trail to Sanatorium Lake. Along the way, keep your eyes open for some of the 157 species of birds recorded here, plus the numerous kangaroos, swamp wallabies, echidnas, wombats and koalas who call the park home.

More than 60,000 hectares of genuine bush experience, the Wombat State Forest straddles the Great Dividing Range from Ballarat in the West to Macedon in the East. The 65km Wombat Forest Drive starts at Daylesford and takes in sights including Lyonville Mineral Springs and the picturesque picnic spot at Nolans Creek. Stay on nature’s trail and continue further south to Lerderderg State Park, a vast enclave for native wildlife that stretches from Blackwood to Bacchus Marsh.

One of the best ways to experience the region on foot is by joining a guided tour with bothfeet Walking Tours. After the energetic enjoyment, reward yourself with the complete double life experience of the region, a spa followed by luxury dining – decadence and cleansing.

lake daylesford

Tranquil Lake Daylesford was once a very rowdy place. It covers an area previously called Wombat Flat Diggings, where pioneer settler John Egan found gold in August 1851.

Daylesford’s first town centre was a cluster of tents and shanties when the town was surveyed in 1854. But Governor Hotham wasn’t happy with the name Wombat and changed it to Daylesford a year later.

When the alluvial gold ran out, Wombat Flat Diggings became the site of a Chinese market garden and joss house. This was maintained until 1929 when the man-made Lake Daylesford was created.

The busy prospector John Egan made another golden discovery in 1852, this time at Hepburn Springs – named after fellow settler Captain John Hepburn of Smeaton Park – which became known as the Jim Crow Diggings.

In the mad rush to dig out the gold, many of the precious mineral springs were put at risk. Thanks to the foresight of Daylesford’s early residents, particularly Swiss Italian settlers, who held their first “springs protection” meeting in 1864, the precious waters were saved. The rest, as they say, is history.

Taking The waTers

give yourself over to the essence of the region – the restorative magic of mineral springs, spas, wellness therapies and treatments. look in the mirror afterwards and you’ll be amazed that the glowing face smiling back is actually your own.

Come to Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges region to give you a charge. Someone free from everyday stress. Revitalised in mind and body.

Between Daylesford and Hepburn Springs are 72 of Victoria’s 110 known springs and some of the most sensational rejuvenation therapies you’ll find anywhere. No wonder the region is known as Spa Country.

Part of the restorative experience is rambling through glades of woodlands sampling the waters from hand-pumps and taps dotted around Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges. Each has its own distinctive taste and beneficial micro-nutrients. Each is free to taste.

The countless springs in the region range from the well-known, like the historic springs at Hepburn Springs Reserve to hidden gems like Deep Spring – the site of the region’s oldest pump house located in a gully of tall eucalypts near the hamlet of Eganstown. Another worthwhile visit is Tipperary Spring, only several easy kilometres from Lake Daylesford.

Since the 1850s when prospectors sought their fortunes at Victoria’s rich goldfields, the Daylesford-Macedon region has always attracted visitors. Today with its ever-growing interesting mix of restaurants, galleries, spa facilities and boutiques, it is the state’s foremost country destination and the nation’s premier spa area.

Set on the fringes of the Wombat State Forest, Daylesford was founded on gold diggings. By 1859 gold had lured more than 3,000 hopeful prospectors to the area including Swiss-Italians from Northern Italy and the Swiss canton of Ticino.

Many decided to remain, attracted by the region’s rolling wood-clad hills and lush countryside which reminded them of home.

The Swiss-Italians realised the value of the health-giving mineral springs in the area which tap into a 450 million year-old volcanic basin. They started bottling mineral water in the 1850s and by 1865, ensured the Hepburn Springs Reserve was set aside to protect the precious waters from gold mining waste.

Thanks to their diligence, Hepburn Springs developed into a popular 19th century spa resort where fashionable Melburnians travelled by coach and train to ‘take the waters’. Gracious guest houses and hotels were built, some of which you can still stay in today.

More than 100,000 visitors made the journey each year to bathe in the thermal waters at the original Hepburn spa complex. Today, many more enjoy the modern spa facilities and specialised treatments.

Spa experiences here are as varied as the landscape. With more than 30 spas, wellness retreats and massage centres in Daylesford and Hepburn Springs alone, choosing the ways in which to indulge yourself is the about the only stressful aspect of visiting this evocative corner of Victoria.

The historic Hepburn Springs Mineral Springs Reserve is an immaculately-preserved parkland of stately trees and gardens which houses the stunning new Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa complex, one of the country’s largest spa treatment centres.

An epicentre of the region’s health-giving mineral springs experience is the boldly contemporary Bathhouse and Spa. It features heated pools and spas fed by the natural springs bubbling up from below.

Piper Street is also the only street in country Victoria to have two restaurants awarded The Age Good Food Guide hats – Annie Smithers Bistrot and the Royal George Hotel which offers seriously good Mediterranean-inspired cuisine.

Heritage elegance and fine dining combine in Woodend’s 1920s English manor, Campaspe Country House. While you’re in Woodend, pop into Maloa House Gourmet Delights and pack the perfect picnic.

On your way in and out of the region, visit the food bowl of Moorabool, especially around Bacchus Marsh where the fertile choice of fresh fruit and vegetables is always amazing.

Pit stops in the region mean much more than refuelling. A classic example is Malmsbury Bakery where a simple on-the-fly feed might include salmon baguettes, famous pies and pasties. A nother is Trentham’s Red Beard Historic Bakery which turns out organic sourdough bread and pastry using traditional handmade techniques and a huge 19th century wood-fired oven

Trentham is also the place for local produce. And as the farmers would testify, the soil throughout the region is perfect for in-ground growing. Potatoes thrive, from Dutch creams to kipflers, desirees and

Top off your gallery and gardens experience with lunch at the Convent Gallery’s own Bad Habits Café. Or tranquil afternoon teas at the Hepburn Pavilion Café at the Hepburn Mineral Springs Reserve. For a relaxed pace straight from another century, little surpasses lunch amid the pastoral splendour of Lavandula’s La Trattoria.

Many wonderful producers and providores are family affairs. Like Istra Smallgoods which salts, cures and smokes European-style smallgoods including hams, prosciutto, sausages, salamis and bacon. It’s all presented with care at their farm shop in Musk.

Turn fresh trout into a whole new gourmet experience by visiting Tuki Trout Farm near Smeaton. Catch and cook your own or choose from an array of purchases, including smoked trout paté, whole smoked trout and fresh trout, plus companion treats like pasture-fed Tuki lamb and beef.

Some of the smaller villages offer the biggest rewards. At Bullarto, Fernleigh Farms is an organic-growing institution, rearing rare Wessex Saddleback pigs and selling cuts from their farm shop alongside the freshest vegetables. Other organic champions include Daylesford Organics and Captains Creek Organics at Blampied.

Blampied and Lyonville have each resurrected their one-pub village reputations with new energy pumped into reviving their heritage pubs. That said, few streets offer foodies more rewards than Kyneton’s Piper Street.

The renowned Piper Street precinct is a regional destination in itself where this understated heritage stretch boasts innovative specialty food outlets and exquisite dining experiences.

Treat yourself and go door to door. There’s Slow Living which specialises in local organic and biodynamic produce. Pizza Verde for great thin-based pizzas. russets. Just keep an eye out for roadside ‘honesty box’ stalls, leave your money and grab a sack or two. Potatoes are the tip of the iceberg for what’s seasonally offered at farm gates.

In summer, for example, you’ll find punnet-loads of raspberries, blueberries, bilberries and boysenberries, plus juicy orchard fruits including apples and pears. All indicators of the edible abundance available in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region.

there are few finer sounds than the cork popping on a well-cellared bottle of fine local wine.

It is accompanied by a sense of anticipation, a subtle waft of scent, and (if it’s being shared) a collective twinkling of eyes and twitching of taste buds. Such a prelude is commonplace in this alluring region where every wine experience is worth bottling.

No need to knock, you’ll find cellar doors wide open and welcoming everywhere in the region. Enjoy wine at each end of the spectrum, from award-winning to unsung, with each made even more delicious by mouth-watering regional cuisine and breathtaking countryside.

From a few vines planted by pioneers to epicurean icons, the cool climate wines of the Macedon Ranges wine region are lauded as some of the best in the world. No wonder, when you consider what goes into creating them – the dedication of generations of viticulturists, diverse

Many are open seven days a week, so you can explore at your leisure. Join winery tours or discover hidden gems down sun dappled lanes all on your own. Experience special wine tastings, including limited editions, and try your taste buds at food and wine matching.

Combine a great local wine with a delicious tasting platter of local food and the compatible tastes will rock your palate and form memories that will last a lifetime.

Of course, wine experiences aren’t only about wine, they’re a feast for all your senses. There are more than 35 superb wineries to explore here, plus an array of accompanying pleasures – from fresh produce snapped up at farm gates to browsing the stalls of village markets and exciting menus of cafés and restaurants.

Although the Macedon Ranges region is best known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay based sparkling wines, wineries produce many styles, from earthy and ethereal reds to fragrant, elegant whites. And releasing the cork on a bottle of local sparkling wine is always worth celebrating.

Speaking of sparks, the many standout wineries of the region include Hanging Rock Winery, where John and Ann Ellis produce their outstanding sparkling Macedon Cuvée. Hanging Rock is the largest in the area and only a stone’s throw from the famous rock itself.

soils, temperate weather and an appreciative public all contribute to the evolution of unique varieties that dazzle the palate.

Closer to Melbourne, the Sunbury wine region is a great starting point for your travels. It is one of Victoria’s oldest, having produced wine as early as the 1860s.

The region’s winemakers are certainly passionate about their wine, but that doesn’t make them elitist. Wander into any of the wineries and you’ll be welcomed like a long lost cousin.

Every winery in the Macedon Ranges region is a family affair. Which means it is often the son, daughter or the winemaker themselves greeting you at the cellar door, pouring you tasting glasses and regaling tales about how each wine was born.

Ellender Estate near Glenlyon also produces excellent sparkling wine. Sample sensational Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Curly Flat Winery in Lancefield. Cobaw Ridge Winery near Kyneton offers a selection which includes the spicy savoury Italian varietal, Lagrein. Taste memorable Shiraz, Chardonnay and Riesling amid the grandeur of Granite Hills Winery at Baynton and handcrafted, certified organic wines at Captains Creek Organic Wines in Blampied.

Sample the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of Gisborne Peak Winery in Gisborne South and pay a visit to MorganField Vineyard near Lancefield for distinctive Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Other worthwhile stops on your wine wanderings are the historic bluestone cellar doors of wineries in the adjacent Sunbury wine region. Standouts include Wildwood Vineyards, Goona Warra Vineyard, Longview Creek, Galli Estate and Witchmont Estate.

The Budburst Festival is held in November each year and is a celebration of the wine, food & lifestyle of the Macedon Ranges and the emerging buds signal the beginning of the new grape growing season and the arrival of spring.

It’s a treat in August to visit Sunbury due to the annual Sunbury Wine Region Festival. The festival includes wine tastings, master classes, live music and the very best local food and wine.

daylesford and the macedon ranges offer an abundance of experiences, with hidden gems tucked away along a scenic network of country roads in vibrant, historic and nurtured villages.

Journey into history down lovingly-preserved gold rush streetscapes in villages throughout the region. Along the way discover an engaging mix of charming cafés, classic pubs, boutique wineries and world class restaurants. Browse in lofty galleries, eclectic shops and secluded nurseries, stopping en-route to stock up on fresh regional produce sold straight from the farms.

With more than 4,000 comfortable beds in the Daylesford-Hepburn Springs area alone, accommodation options in the region offer the spectrum of styles – from welcoming hosted accommodation, farm stays to chic studios and luxury boutique hotels. Or put yourselves in the hands of accommodation booking services like Daylesford Escapes or Daylesford Getaways.

Wile away time in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region and you’ll realise how easy, and how right it feels, to make every moment all about you.

Take a guided walk through the forest stopping at the natural springs along the way, ending up at the Hepburn Springs Bathhouse.

farmers markets

There’s an array of temptations for fine food fossickers at farmers’ markets held across the villages of the region.

Wander amid stalls overflowing with fruit and vegetables straight from the farm, organic herbs, free-range eggs, homemade mustards, chutneys and sauces, olive oils and artisan-made cheese. It’s all here and at reasonable prices too.

For a sweet treat, choose from homemade cakes and biscuits, rare honey produced from native flora and sweet jams and conserves. Mobile barista carts are a welcome bonus when resistance proves futile at the cake stalls.

Although you’d never know it from the ambling pace of its main street. Hepburn is all about understatement and unwinding, imbued with a laid-back, old-world vibe that made it the place 19th century holidaymakers came to ‘take the waters’. A special place to stay is Bellinzona – an elegant tribute to the history of the region and always a memorable experience.

Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm just down the road is an absolutely captivating collection of 1860s stone buildings and fields of fragrant lavender. Browse the luxurious lavender products for sale, from balms to shampoo, and dine al fresco on Italian-inspired fare at La Trattoria Café.

Further afield, and set on the fringes of the Wombat State Forest, is the sleepy spot of Trentham. Nature lovers, artists and alternative lifestylers abound here, adding considerably to colour and atmosphere of a place that brims with character. Visit Trentham Falls, the longest single drop waterfall in Victoria and discover the delights of freshly-baked sourdough bread from Red Beard Historic Bakery.

Kick back and have a glass of local wine in the beautiful beer garden of the Cosmopolitan Hotel then explore the remains of old gold diggings scattered throughout the surrounding bush.

Sample refreshing mineral water at the picturesque Lyonville Mineral Springs Reserve ten minutes drive from Trentham or if a beautiful locally-brewed ale is more your fancy, call into Lyonville’s Radio Springs Hotel where you’ll discover fine food and regional wines as well as refreshing beer.

Like most of the region’s charming villages, Clunes seems untouched by time. More than 50 original 19th century buildings makes stepping onto its main street like being on a period film set. Goldrush fortunes made here are reflected in Clunes’ architecture – the circa 1872 town hall, Italianate Post Office, library and courthouse. Each is busy during Clunes’ annual Back to Booktown Festival held in May.

Creswick is another enriching goldfields gem. Less than four years after the village was established in 1851 it was transformed into a mini metropolis by the arrival of more than 25,000 gold prospectors. Discover historic buildings on a town walking tour, take the Creswick Miners’ Walk to former gold

mining sites and get back to nature in Creswick Regional Park and St George’s Lake.

The Novotel Forest Resort near Creswick offers the chance to stay and play in ideal comfort. The superb Novotel Hotel’s luxury accommodation provides everything, from sensational golf to swinging your legs off the jetty at the resort’s own fishing village.

In a picture-postcard setting on the banks of Birch’s Creek at Smeaton is Anderson’s Mill, a magnificent five-storey bluestone building standing today much like it was over 100 years ago. Classified by the National Trust, the old mill is perfect for a picnic with gourmet fare from one of the region’s many fine eateries.

sensual, spirited and effortlessly stylish, daylesford and its surrounding villages are a perpetual reminder of all that is good, right and calm in the world.

Of the cosy little cluster that is Daylesford, Hepburn Springs, Trentham, Clunes and Creswick, the most famous and city-stylish is undoubtedly Daylesford. This photogenic village exudes restorative energy and sophisticated hospitality with such an easy grace you’d think the place had been revitalising the mind, body and soul of visitors forever, which it almost has.

Stroll along Daylesford’s bustling main thoroughfare, Vincent Street, with its eclectic shops and you’ll find everything here from organic vegetables to antiques and art galleries, as well as perfectly poured café lattes – so essential for extra shopping energy.

Perched high on a hill above the village is the spiritual Convent Gallery, a spectacular space which exhibits art, jewellery and sculpture.

Daylesford also boasts a fantastic collection of gift and clothing shops, homeware stores, chocolate shops, restaurants and specialist food outlets. Discover wonderful little shops like Purl’s Palace and explore the shelves of the Paradise Bookshop or the Book Barn down by the lake – each a treasure trove for bookworms. Art lovers will adore Stoney Creek Gallery in Daylesford which offers an engaging selection of fine contemporary art for avid collectors and admirers alike.

Daylesford’s twin spa village is Hepburn Springs. This serene little village is famous for the newly renovated Hepburn Springs Bathhouse and Spa, Peppers Springs Retreat and the iconic music venue opposite, the Palais.

ChillouT FesTiVal from humble beginnings to an australian icon

ChillOut began as an annual festival of the Springs Connection, a local gay and lesbian business group in Daylesford in 1997 over the Victoria Labour Day long-weekend in March. The inaugural festival was held at the Old Winery in Ballan Road attracting participation from 10 stallholders and 50 – 100 visitors over one Sunday afternoon.

A true celebration of diversity and community

ChillOut weekend includes a feast of entertainment and events to appeal to everyone. Arts, crafts, literature, food and wine, live music and cabaret events are just some of the events that will take you on your own odyssey through the diversity of culture, health and wellbeing in the region. One of the most popular events is the street parade along Vincent Street, a pageant

to end all pageants for country GLBTIQ pride and diversity.

ChillOut has always been a community-based organisation supported by the efforts of volunteers and in-kind and financial support from businesses. Since establishment, ChillOut has raised more than $125,000 for local charities, worthy causes and groups.

ChillOut is dedicated to celebrating gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer pride within the unique setting of regional Victoria. It’s all part of the celebration of diversity, with friends and family, combined with our love for this beautiful part of Victoria – that is ChillOut.

More information For more information on ChillOut visit chilloutfestival.com.au

Since its inception ChillOut has grown to become the largest gay and lesbian festival in regional Australia and the largest festival in Hepburn Shire. With steady growth in attendance each year, over 25,000 people attended ChillOut in 2009 and nearly 100 stallholders participated at Carnival Day.

naTurally Cool

the macedon ranges region has a presence all its own. every village is alive with artists, galleries, cafes, gardens and culinary masterminds. The region is internationally famous for the mysterious geological formation, Hanging Rock. This series of jumbled boulders has been an Australian icon since Joan Lindsay’s Picnic at Hanging Rock was published in 1967 and the Peter Weir film of the same name first screened in 1975. Situated just outside the picturesque town of Woodend, Hanging Rock is also the name of one of the Macedon Ranges region’s renowned cool-climate wineries and is open to the public 364 days of the year.

Thanks to the rich volcanic soils and cooler climate, wineries can be found across the region, down country lanes and on hilltops overlooking grassy valleys. Quaint cellar doors invite every wine enthusiast to sample the limited edition wines of the region. Wine makers are often on

hand to share their stories. Being only an hour from Melbourne makes for an easy day trip, especially with so many opportunities to indulge in gourmet food and wine, and visit unique villages along the way.

When it comes to fine food and wine, the villages of the Macedon Ranges all excel. Woodend even boasts its own brew-house. This cosy township has the peaceful ambience you expect for a little village set snugly on the Northern fringe of the Black Forest. It’s the place to buy native plants, delicious preserves and smallgoods, and laze by the fireside with a good book and cafe latte.

By contrast, Kyneton hums with contemporary culture, much of it happening within the town’s elegant and historic streetscapes. In fact, the street that seems the most reserved, heritage-listed Piper Street – boasts all kinds of creative pursuits, from stonework to wool spinning. This unspoilt colonial thoroughfare is home to wonderful boutiques and shops selling all sorts of treasures. It’s also one of the finest ’foodie’ streets in the state, a selection of great pubs, cafes, restaurants and delicatessens.

No surprise that Kyneton was recently named by Melbourne’s Age newspaper as one of Victoria’s most interesting gastronomic destinations.

In a historic sense, Malmsbury is a must. It features bluestone buildings from the town hall to the train station, and the expansive Botanic Gardens established in 1863 are a great place for some fresh country air. The National Trust-classified viaduct was created from local bluestone and stands just as proud today as when it was first built during the mid 19th century.

With wide streets and classic heritage buildings, nearby Lancefield is a quiet traditional country town surrounded by rolling farmland. Delve into the area’s fascinating history as you travel the scenic drive along the Burke and Wills Track, the route taken by the explorers when they left Lancefield in 1860 after stocking up on supplies.

The village is abuzz each month locals and visitors frequenting the Lancefield Farmers Market, where everyone enjoys the wide choice of fresh local produce for sale, which includes everything from fresh honey, jams, eggs and chutneys to olives, chocolates, wines and vegetables.

maCeDon rangeS: wooDenD, kyneTon, giSborne, lanCefielD, romSey, malmSbury, maCeDon, mT maCeDon, riDDellS Creek anD SurrounDS

Lancefield is also a magnet for antique fans who flock to the Macedonia – three floors crammed with antiques and art.

Follow the 8km heritage trail from Lancefield to Romsey by foot or bicycle or drive the same distance along the rise and fall of the wide country road past potato and daffodil farms. Wineries dot the hills around Romsey and you will find tasty treats in the café’s and bakery.

Nearby, the Dromkeen Homestead at Riddells Creek is a must-visit for families. This graceful National Trust classified 19th century homestead houses the Australian Children’s Literature Collection, and boasts the most complete collection of original artwork, manuscripts and other pre-publication material from Australian children’s books.

Nestled among the spectacular Macedon Ranges with historic monuments, imposing mansions, and grand gardens are the villages of Macedon and Mount Macedon. Both peaceful, leafy townships are well worth a visit, with welcoming eateries, and a warm ambience all surrounded by the 2,427ha Macedon Regional Park. The park has an abundance of native flora and fauna – more than 150 varieties of birds and 20 mammal species including kangaroos, echidnas, wombats and koalas.

Not far from ‘the Mount’ is Gisborne, a village in the valley with a bustling community life. The first Sunday of each month sees the Gisborne Olde Time Market spring to life with a variety of stalls from local food and wine to second hand goods. Wander the many stalls and take some time to relax in a local cafe or picnic in one of the town parks.

The village experience of the Macedon Ranges is unlike any other in the state and so close to Melbourne, in under an hour’s drive. That said, the best way to live your double life to the full is to stay a while.

Accommodation offerings here are as diverse as the selection of creative architectural styles and landscape settings. So take a journey through the villages and be enchanted by the fabulous food and wine, the beauty of nature, great shopping and unique events of this remarkable region.

one of australia’s fastest growing municipalities, the shire of melton embraces a series of villages and vast rural landscapes. The fertile volcanic soils of the Western Plains provide vignerons with an ideal setting to produce award-winning flavours in their wines. This was recognised in 2008 when Witchmount Estate won the World’s Best Shiraz at the Syrah Du Monde awards in France. In Melton and surrounds you can meet the winemakers and enjoy fine dining as part of the wine experience of the region, only 35km from Melbourne’s CBD.

The Mediterranean menu has a distinctive Italian flair at bluestone Avanti at Witchmount Estate, offering fabulous dishes to go with their celebrated shiraz, unoaked chardonnay and Italian-style wines. At Galli Estate in Rockbank you can order Italian-inspired dishes to match the Italian varietals.

On the sporting front, Tabcorp Park, Harness Racing Victoria’s new $45 million entertainment and racing complex at Melton is another reason to visit this vibrant region.

A unique sporting and community hub featuring a state-of-the-art 1040-metre racetrack, Tabcorp boasts a range of entertainment facilities including a four star motel, function and conference rooms, bistro, sports bar, TAB and gaming room.

Swing out on two of Victoria’s top golf courses, Melton Valley Golf Club and the new 18 hole Graham Marsh golf course in the township of Eynesbury.

The Shire of Melton is also home to some of the rarest examples of dry stone walls in Australia. In pioneering days, farmers used the volcanic nuggets that littered the fields to build dry stone boundaries. Take the 90km Dry Stone Wall Driving Trail to best experience this unique attraction.

Along the way, you’ll see some of the region’s oldest natural features including the ancient volcanic cone, Mt Kororoit.

In Melton, volunteers conduct free guided tours of the local heritage trail. These bring to life the area’s gold rush days of the 1850s, when Melton was an important stopover for countless prospectors travelling from Melbourne to the Ballarat goldfields.

Many other big shire events revolve around produce and wine, including the Harvest Festival in March and the Autumn Festival in Ballan – a real grass roots country community experience.

Moorabool Shire’s many other charming villages include Ballan, Koorweinguboora, Mount Egerton, Myrniong, Gordon and Greendale. The rolling green hills shown in the movie, Charlotte’s Web, are the same verdant meadows surrounding Greendale which also boasts the charismatic Greendale Pub and historic general store.
