    What is a Hybrid?

The dictionary defines a hybrid as something

    of mixed origin.

Any vehicle that combines two or moresources of power that can directly or indirectly

provide propulsion power is a hybrid.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) include both a

combustion engine as well as an electric

    motor.

    PARALLEL HYBRID

Gasoline engine and electric motor worktogetherto move the car forward.

Has a fuel tank that supplies fuel to the engine

like a regular car. It also has a set of batteries

    that run an electric motor.

Both the engine and electricmotor can turn the transmis-

    sion at the same time.

    SERIES HYBRID

Gasoline engine either directly powers anelectric motor that powers the vehicle, orcharges batteries that will power the motor.

The fuel tank goes to the engine, but theengine turns a generator.

Then the generator can either charge the

batteries or power an electric motor thatdrives the transmission.

The engine does not directly power the car.

    HOWDO HYBRIDCARSWORK

A hybrid car is a passenger vehicle that is

driven by a hybrid engine, which is an engine

that combines two or more sources of power,

    generally gasoline and electricity

    Working Continued

    Both use gasoline-electric hybrid technology,

    but in radically different ways

    Both have small gasoline engines

Both produce much less pollution than

    standard gasoline cars

Both are constructed of ultra lightweightmaterials like carbon fiber or aluminum to

    overcome the power gap

    Working Continued

Both are generally designed to be moreaerodynamic than most cars, allowing them toslice through the air instead of pushing it out of

the way Both use a process called regenerative braking to

store the kinetic energy generated by brake use inthe batteries, which in turn will power the

electric motor Both use electric power at starts and stops, low

    speeds (generally below 15mph)

    Why Hybrid Vehicles?

Emissions from recent CVs causes GlobalWarming and Human Sickness.

    Advances in battery, power electronics

    technologies have made commercializationpossible

Performance is generally as good as or betterthan CVs

    Reduction inN

    OISE

pollution. HEVs have demonstrated significant potential to

reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
