Lay Minister’s Convocation As we prepare to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of our US Conference of Catholic Bishop’s document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, Archbishop Wester will offer a day of formation and recognition for the many lay women and men who generously and extensively work together with their pastors in the service of their local church community. This will be the first-ever Lay Minister’s Convocation in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

Since 1959 when Pope John XXIII announced his desire to “throw open the windows of the Church” and his intention to convene the Second Vatican Council, the Holy Spirit, through the Holy Mother Church has called forth the laity to serve as co-workers in their parishes. “Sharing in the function of Christ, priest, prophet and king, the laity have an active part of their own in the life and activity of the church. Their activity within the church communities is so necessary that without it the apostolate of the pastors will frequently be unable to obtain its full effect.” [Decree on the Apostolate of the Lay People (Apostolicam Actuositatem) (AA), no. 10; see also LG, no. 33, and Congregation for the Clergy et al., Instruction on Certain Questions Regarding the Collaboration of the Non-Ordained Faithful in the Sacred Ministry of Priests (Ecclesiae de Mysterio) (Washington, DC: USCCB–Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 1998), Foreword.]

For the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope John Paul II re-affirmed the need for the participation of the laity in ministry. “[T]he Church of the Third Millennium will need to encourage all the baptized and confirmed to be aware of their active responsibility in the Church’s life. Together with the ordained ministry, other ministries, whether formally in-stituted or simply recognized, can flourish for the good of the whole community, sustaining it in all its many needs: from catechesis to liturgy, from education of the young to the widest array of charitable works.” [John Paul II, At the Close of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 (Novo Millennio Ineunte) (NMI), no. 46, http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_letters/documents/hf_jp-ii_apl_ 20010106_novo-millennio-ineunte_en.html]

In recognition, support and celebration of the lay ministers in our Archdiocese, Archbishop John C. Wester will lead the Convocation: “Lay Ministry: Baptized for Service and Mission.” This formal assembly will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at St. John XXIII parish in Albuquerque, beginning at 10:00 a.m. and concluding with the anticipatory Sunday Mass at 5:30 p.m. All lay ministers throughout the Archdiocese are invited and encouraged to attend this extraordinary day.

Sacred Fire : A Vision for Deeper Christian and Human Maturi-ty. by Rolheiser, Ronald. - 2019. - eBook, audio book and print. With his trademark acuity, wit, and thoughtfulness, Rolheiser shows how identifying and embracing disci-pleship will lead to new heights of spiritual awareness and maturity. He takes us on a journey through the dark night of the senses and of the spirit. Here, we ex-perience the full gamut of human life, pleasure and fervor, disillusionment and boredom. But, as Rolheiser explains, when we embrace the struggle and yearning to know God, we can experience too a profound re-understanding of our daily lives. "What lies beyond the essentials, the basics?"

The Joy of the Mass : A Catholic's Guide to the Eucharist. by O Malley, Timothy P. - audio book In The Joy of the Mass , leading liturgical expert Dr. Timothy P. O'Malley guides you on an enlight-ening and inspiring journey. Grounded in the historical and spiritual developments of the Mass, these 12 lectures will enrich your faith and enhance your enjoyment of each Eucharistic celebration. Whether you are a priest or a parishioner, you will learn to use the Mass as a spiritual practice for healing in the modern age. To enhance your understanding, you'll draw on the philosophical, theo-logical, and spiritual insights of such luminaries as St. Augus-tine of Hippo, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope Francis, and Evelyn Underhill. Through a deeper participation in the Mass, you will discover self-giving love, an enriched life of prayer, and fuller engagement with the world.

Call on Patroness of Those Harmed by Abortion for Help

Our Lady of Czestochowa, a famous Marian icon, has sur-vived a history of violence and destruction, leaving scars on the Madonna’s face and neck which resurface after

every attempt at restoring the icon. Some Catholics have come to believe that it is Mary’s own will that these scars remain visible. Because of her scars, Our Lady of Czestochowa is known as the patroness of children, women, and men who have been harmed by abortion. Those who grieve from an abortion are sometimes led to believe that their grief is unfounded. Like us, Mary the mother of Jesus is human. She knows sorrow from the terrible loss of her son. Our Blessed Mother understands us and she walks with us, guiding us to her Son’s healing embrace. For post abortion healing, call the Project Rachel confidential message line at 505-831-8238. …a contrite, humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn. Psalm 51:19.

5 Ways You Can Observe the World Day of the Poor:

1. Pray: There are so many people who need our prayers. If you’re not sure where to start, try praying with your newsfeed. As you see head-lines about what’s happening around the world, pause and pray for the people affected by those stories. 2. Practice the Corporal Works of Mercy: The Corporal Works of Mercy are drawn from Jesus’ life and teachings. They call us to: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and imprisoned, bury the dead and give alms to the poor. Pope Francis added a new work of mercy: to care for God’s crea-tion. The Corporal Works of Mercy offer a clear model and starting point for how to care for our neighbors in need. 3. Make Caring for the Poor Part of Your Routine: Support low-income workers around the world by buying things you use on a regular basis from organizations that pay a fair wage. If you drink coffee or tea, look for a fair trade label, which means that the farmers who harvest the coffee or tea are paid fairly and work in safe condi-tions. As you begin your Christmas shop-ping, consider buying gifts from around the world that are produced and traded ethi-cally. 4. Learn About the Causes of Poverty and Work to Change Them: There are many reasons why people around the world are trapped in poverty: lack of jobs, war and climate change that affects what farmers can grow are only a few examples. We can raise our voices together to ask our gov-ernment to support policies that help ad-dress these causes of poverty. 5. Support the Church’s Outreach to the Poor: Supporting the U.S. Bishop’s anti-poverty effort, Catholic Campaign for Hu-man Development (CCHD). On the week-end before Thanksgiving, the same day as the World Day for the Poor, Diocese around the country hold the annual CCHD collection, and we need you contribute! The collection is the only annual oppor-tunity to raise essential funds to support the work of over 200 anti-poverty organi-zations around the country. See http://www.usccb.org/about/catholic-campaign-for-human-development/index.cfm for more information.

Quote of the Month from

Pope Francis “Daily we encoun-

ter families forced to leave their homeland to seek a living else-where; orphans who have lost their parents or were violently torn from them by brutal means of exploita-tion; young people seeking profes-sional fulfilment but prevented from employment by shortsighted eco-nomic policies; victims of different kinds of violence, ranging from pros-titution to the narcotics trade, and profoundly demeaned. How can we overlook, too, the millions of immigrants who fall victim to any number of concealed interests, often exploited for political advantage, and are refused solidarity and equality? And all the homeless and ostracized persons who roam the streets of our cities?

Working on the Margins: Help the CCHD Collection November 23-24 in Parishes!

“The hope of the poor shall not perish for-ever” (Ps 9:19). On November 17, 2019, the Third World Day of the Poor, Pope Francis calls all Christians to acknowledge the forms of enslavement which persuade men, women, young people and children to be victims of exploitation, violence, and marginalization simply because they are poor. In the United States, one out of six Americans live in poverty. Since 1969, the Catholic Campaign for Human Develop-ment (CCHD) anti-poverty program has empowered community groups of poor and low-income people to address the root causes of poverty in their communities. On November 23 and 24, the CCHD Annual Collection will take place in every U.S. Catholic Parish. This collection supports the U.S. Catholic Bishops-CCHD's work to ad-dress root causes of poverty. Please give generously to this Annual Collection and support CCHD's work to fight pov-erty. Make it a way to respond to this World Day of the Poor initiative to “give real hope to many of our vulnerable broth-ers and sisters (Pope Francis).” All parishes should have already received their promotion materials and post-ers. The collection funds both national and local grants (25% of the collections stays locally) available to non-profit organiza-tions working on community or economic development projects. Totaling $124,000 in grants, currently CCHD is funding a com-munity led program to protect scarce wa-ter rights, jobs for youth doing historic preservation of traditional adobe struc-tures, programs that advocate for immi-grants and refugees, advocacy for early childhood intervention and a coop for local caregivers. CCHD has also collaborated with The Catholic Foundation on local eco-nomic development grants. For more infor-mation see www.usccb.org/cchd or con-tact our office (see box).

New Video from PovertyUSA We are excited to share this brand new video from PovertyUSA and its mirror site, PobrezaUSA, avail-able in both English and Span-ish, which lifts up the experi-ences of so many brothers and sisters who struggle to make ends meet. In the United States, tens of mil-lions of people live in a web of poverty. This video offers important insight into the complexity of poverty, how it con-nects to everything that we do and the many factors that keep so many people and families entrapped. Help your com-munity learn more and discuss what solu-tions are needed to overcome poverty. Here is the direct link to the vid-eo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZXeRx2ec5g&feature=youtu.be

Reflection: Focus on the Exit As we finish our worship at the Mass, focus on the exit sign. "Unless you take what you’ve heard by the Word of God, unless you take Jesus who you’ve received in the Eucharist and go forth and carry him to others, it’s not worth it,” Father Tom Charters of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic mission in Erwin, TN said. “You are the missionaries. You have to go forth and do it.”

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops USCCB Conformity List In his letter dated September 19, 2015 Archbishop Wester reiterated the standing policy regarding the use of faith formation materials from the USCCB Conformity List. While the letter was written regarding the Sacrament of Confirmation and youth pro-grams, the same applies to all Religious Education/Faith Formation.

“To ensure conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Subcommittee on the Catechism has developed a Conformity Review Process to ensure the doctrinal content is correct

and accurate. A list of approved tests for Confirmation and youth programs [and elementary age programs] can be found on the USCCB website. Please refer to the Conformity List for the approved material that are to be used

for your confirmation preparation [and children’s faith formation programs].”
