DAY & NIGHT

Do you know what creates days, nights, years & seasons?

Let’s see…..

Objective/Learning Target

Students will demonstrate scientific knowledge through role play as the Earth, moon and the sun while recalling accurate science.

Content Statements

5ESS1: The solar system includes the sun and all celestial bodies that orbit the sun.

5ESS3: Most of the cycles and patterns of motion between the Earth and sun are predictable.

Teaching Revolution at Coe

A clear distinction between rotation and revolution needs to be made. Stress this – clarify & question.

What creates day & night?

Rotation of Earth on its axis (23.5 degree).

Earth rotates from east to west, so the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Rotates about 1000 miles/hour! Read children's book

What makes a year? The complete Revolution of

Earth around the sun makes a year.

Earth is moving through space as it revolves around the sun at about 67,000 miles/hour!

Revolution is ellipsoidal, not circular.

The Earth is actually closest to the sun in the northern hemisphere’s winter when it is coldest!

What Creates Seasons? It's all about the direct rays & tilt!

Seasons are created because Earth is tilted 23.5º on its axis coupled with the different amounts of DIRECT sunlight the Earth receives throughout the year.

As Earth moves around the sun, the direct rays of the sun migrate from 23.5º N to 23.5º S of the equator within a year.

When the direct rays of the sun are at 23.5º N, our first day of summer begins. SUMMER SOLSTICE

When the direct rays of the sun are at 23.5º S, our first day of winter begins. WINTER SOLSTICE

When the direct rays of the sun are at the equator (2x each year), our first day of spring and fall begin. VERNAL & AUTUMNAL EQUINOX

The Four Seasons

Moon Phases Overview

the moon orbits the earth in about 28 days. the position of the earth, sun or moon

affects the phases of the moon and which part of the moon we can see.

The moon does not produce any light, it merely reflects light from the sun

Regional Weather Patterns

A regional issue for us is:

Lake Effect Snow (Video)

This happens in other states too!

Rain Shadow Effect:

Monsoons Monsoon- changes in

atmospheric circulation resulting in symmetric heating of land and sea -> rainy season AND dry season.

Region of world where this occurs: West African and Asia-Australian

Typhoons

Mature tropical cyclone in the northwest Pacific Ocean.
