Awesome job by our Junior Boys Baseball team who also advanced to the quarter finals and were one run away from advancing on again this year. Tough tough play and awesome sportsmanship by all. SO proud of this team. Team members are: Joshua L, Jaxton F, Brayden H, Sam G., Antonio C, Gerald B, Talan F, Luke S, Colton T, Jack K, Carter B, Kyle B, Matt G, Matthew C, Clinton S. Special thanks to Mr. Filby for his awesome umpiring, Mrs. Stoner and Mrs. Tervuld for their scorekeeping. And of course the wonderful group of parents for their consistent support and cheering on game day. Heads up Fairwood - we got this next year!!! Mrs. Waters The Intermediate Boys played a great tournament. They started slow, but dominated their next two games to secure a playoff spot. It was a tough opponent and despite a strong effort, the team didn't advance. There were some awesome hits, great pitches and spectacular catches. Well done boys! Mr. Donald Team members to be commended are: Bradley S, Ryan S, Jack G, Dylan B, George C, Nathan l, Brock W, Patrick V. Michael G, Keegan S, Bailey M, Alexander M, Tanner K School Council There are many ways parents, family, and community members can connect with their child’s school to enhance their day-to-day well-being and learning experiences. Parent Involvement Committees enhance parent contributions at the regional level in support of student well-being, learning and achievement, and they act as a direct link between parents, the director of education and the trustees. School councils are responsible for: • supporting and promoting parent, family and community engagement in support of student learning; • participating in the development and implementation of the school improvement plan; • communicating with, and providing ongoing advice to, the principal about matters pertaining to the school; and • collaborating with the principal to coordinate community resources that support student learning needs.

School Policy 262.0 Please join us on Tuesday, October 3 at 6:30 for our first School Council meeting. Together we can make a difference! Student Safety We love to see the community using the playground after school. However, parents/caregivers are responsible for the supervision of their own children who stay to play on the yard after our 2:50pm dismissal. There is no supervision by staff at that time

Recess Revival There have been a number of rough play incidents during the recess and lunch hours over the past two weeks. Many students have engaged in ‘hands on’ activities that often lead to injury and hurt feelings. As a staff we have taken a number of steps to stop this behaviour.

Mrs. Waters has been teaching the tarmac games to all of the students, and we are training older playground leaders to support fair play.

A games and conflict resolution program is being offered by Mrs. Wiatrzyk and Mrs. Perry in the gym every morning recess. All students are invited to attend.

Additional staff have been reassigned/added to our yard duty roster. Recess privileges have been removed and phone calls made to inform parents.

Please take some time to discuss with your child the importance of safe play and that we are here to help them.

Technology –Personal Devices For students who are permitted to bring to school and use electronic devices, we ask that parents communicate with their child by contacting the school office rather than texting child directly so that your child can appropriately attend to the learning within the classroom. Also as a reminder to students and families neither the school nor the school board are responsible for the loss or damage to personal electronic devices as these are not school board issued learning materials.

The school staff appreciates your understanding and co-operation with regard to this matter of communication and student safety. ONLINE Student Safety On Wednesday October 11th students in Grades 3-8 will be participating in a social media workshop designed to support safe, smart, and kind online behaviours. In partnership with our School Council and Lakeside P.S., a parent session has also been planned during the evening from 6:00 – 7:00p.m. Please join us at Lakeside Public School to learn about:

6 key conversations to have with your kids about social media Making kids feel empowered to be SAFE online

For further information about the session, please contact the office. With appreciation, Jill Maar Derek Totten Pat Best Diane Carlson Principal Vice Principal Admin Assistant Admin Assistant

Head LiceWhat are head lice?Head lice, or louse are a common parasitic insect that can be found on the head, eyebrows and eyelashes of people. Head lice feed on human blood and live close to the human scalp. Head lice are not known to spread disease. There are three forms of head lice; nit (egg), nymph or adult.

Nit (eggs)• Half the size of the head of a pin and shaped like a tear drop• Are a creamy colour and found close to the scalp, on the shaft of the hair • Arecementedtothehairsotheycannotbeblownorflickedoff

Nymph - immature louse • Transparentorrustcolouredafterbloodmealandverydifficulttosee• Reaches maturity in about 10 days• Lice have six legs with claws so they can cling to human hair

Adult - mature louse• Larger than a nymph • The female louse can lay up to 150 eggs during the life span• Lice do not like movement or light and crawl from head to head

Head lice will cause:• Itchy scalp; especially around the hair line and behind the ears• Tickling in the hair• Sores caused by scratching the itchy bites

Headlicemovebycrawlingquicklynothoppingorflying.Headlicearespreadbydirectheadtoheadcontactor sharing personal items like hats, scarves or brushes. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice.

A co-operative community effort will help to control the spread of head lice. This means that all families need to have regular head checks and treat their children if head lice are found.

Steps to check for head lice:• Sit in a well lit area - near a sunny window or bright lamp• Divide the hair into sections and look carefully, one section at a time• Look carefully in the hair, behind the ears, nape of neck, hairline of the head• Check the heads of all family members

Be sensitive to children’s feelings if they have head lice.Ifyoufindheadliceornits,proceedwithtreatment.Speaktoapharmacistorhealthprofessionalabout treatments and follow the directions on the package.

If you don’t see lice or nits, continue to check the head regularly twice a week for one month, or more often, ifyourchildhasbeeninclosecontactwithaconfirmedcaseofheadlice.

To control the spread of head lice:• Do not share personal items• Wash all bedding, towels and hats in hot water or use a hot drying cycle. Place items that can’t be

washed into airtight bags for 10 days to two weeks• Vacuum surfaces where head may have rested, but no extra cleaning of the home is required• Use treatments if live lice or nits are found in the hair. Check the head daily and repeat treatments

if necessary• Follow-up with anyone who may have had close contact to ensure they are checked for lice
