MAR CARERS DAY & EXHIBITION AT DYNAMIC EARTH

10am - 3.30pmTue 3rd

Our Dynamic Earth

Our carers day will feature the opportunity to take part in a variety of science-themed workshops. This will be followed by a tour of the Dynamic Earth Galleries and the chance to participate in a question and answer session.

There will also be an opportunity to visit a Dynamic Earth exhibition showcasing the stories of carers.

Lunch is provided. Please let us know any dietary requirements.

HOLYROOD PALACE & DA VINCI EXHIBITION

11am - 2pmThu 12th

Holyrood Palace / Queens Gallery

A chance to explore the Palace’s close associations with some of Scotland’s most well-known historic figures such as Mary, Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Learn how the Palace is used by the Queen today to carry out her official engagements in Scotland.

The visit will consist of a guided tour of the Palace followed by time for refreshments. After this we will take a highlights tour of Leonard Da Vinci: A Life in Drawing.

The Da Vinci exhibition brings together 80 of the Renaissance master’s greatest drawings in the Royal Collection — the largest group of Leonardo’s works ever shown in Scotland.

Join us for an informal and creative session exploring the brain, music and dementia — and discussions too! All are welcome, no prior experience needed.

EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY BIOLOGY LAB VISIT

10.30am - 3pmTue 18th

Edinburgh University King’s Buildings (Depart from St Margaret’s House)

Carers are invited to University of Edinburgh labs for a lovely day involving hands-on science, a lab tour, and an opportunity to meet and chat over lunch with researchers at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology.

Use microscopes to examine cells and get hands on with a DNA extraction experiment. Visit active research labs followed by discussions with researchers.

Lunch is provided. Please let us know any dietary requirements.

10.30am - 12.30pmThu 6th

The first in a series of nature and city walks exploring both urban and green spaces within and around Edinburgh. On the last Thursday of each month we will meet at 10am for a walk, taking between 2-4 hours depending on the specifics of that day’s route.

Walks are relaxed and varied for different abilities. All are welcome!

EDINBURGH SCIENCE FESTIVAL

The Edinburgh Science Festival runs over two weeks during the Easter holidays (4th-19th April) with almost 270 events for families and adults. Its programmes include family days out, hands-on activities, talks and discussion.

Care for Carers will be organising a half-day outing to one of these events. Please check your C4C newsletter nearer the time and our Facebook page for confirmation of date and venue.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART — GUIDED TOUR

Modern One

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a must-see venue for modern and contemporary art. It comprises two galleries - one on either side of Belford Road - and a fantastic sculpture park.

The tour will take us around the highlights of the gallery and grounds, and light refreshments will be provided afterwards.

MAY “THE PLANETS 360” — SHOWDOME SCREENING

Our Dynamic Earth

The Planets 360 is a re-imagining of British composer Gustav Holst’s The Planets orchestral suite, created in celebration of its 100th anniversary.

Utilising the “full dome” planetarium, NSC Creative has produced a sonically-driven and immersive experience featuring animated sequences of the motion of the planets.

The screening will be followed by a Q and A session with astronomer Steven Gray.

GARDENING SCOTLAND 2020

Royal Highland Centre (Depart from St Margaret’s House)

If you want to find the best plants, catch the latest gardening trends, find a designer to transform your own garden or ask the experts about anything from growing vegetables to keeping bees, then this is the one show that you won’t want to miss!

We will depart from St Margaret’s house at 9.30am for a 10am arrival at the venue.

CARERS WEEK CELEBRATION & OPEN DAY

This year’s Carers Week Open Day will be held at The Stafford Centre, 103 Broughton Street, EH1 3RZ.

There will be a range of fun workshops held in the morning and afternoon, with lunch provided in between. Meet up and enjoy spending time with friends new and old.

UNION CANAL BARGE TRIP

Come and join us for a leisurely trip along the Union Canal on one of the characterful barges based in the Ratho area.

Transport will be leaving from St Margaret’s House at 2.15pm and returning from Ratho at 5.30pm.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the single biggest celebration of arts and culture on the planet. Every year thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste.

In 2020 the Fringe will run from 7th-31st August. The official programme launch takes place on the 10th of June.

Newhailes House and Gardens

Join the Newhailes House and Garden Ranger for an evening of bat discovery. Walk at sunset through the estate and learn about their lives and special forms of communication — and why they are so important in the world..

We begin indoors with a cuppa, followed by an introduction to bats before heading out for our walk. Do wear warm clothing and sturdy outdoor footwear (a torch will be provided).

Traquair House (Depart from St Margaret’s House)

Traquair House is Scotland’s oldest inhabited house. Visited by 27 Scottish kings and queens, it dates back to 1107 and has been occupied by the Stuart family since 1491. Our visit includes a guided tour, lunch in the garden café, and time to explore.

Transport will be leaving from St Margaret’s House at 10am and returning from Traquair at 6pm.

OCT STANDUP COMEDY NIGHT

Bright Club’s unique blend of comedy and academia has made waves across the country, with a storming sell-out show at the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and support from the likes of Robin Ince, Josie Long, Susan Morrison and Bruce Morton.

Join us for this special themed show as funny academics and industry professionals stand up for your entertainment and enlightenment, with banter a-plenty!

THE SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT — GUIDED TOUR

Scottish Parliament Building

The Scottish Parliament building in Holyrood was designed by Spanish architect Enric Miralles and has been the home of the Scottish Parliament since September 2004.

On this general tour of the building, our guide will provide us with information about the architecture of this award-winning structure, the story of the Parliament through history, and its activities in the modern day.

Scottish National Portrait Gallery

Join us at the Portrait Gallery for fun, creative workshops exploring photography. Relax with a cup of tea and cake and try your hand at simple creative activities.

Inspired by portraits at the gallery, participants will be invited to style and create their own photographic portraits to take away with them. The emphasis is on fun, no art experience necessary!

HIBERNIAN FOOTBALL CLUB — GUIDED TOUR

Hibernian Football Club, Easter Road

A guided tour of the Hibs FC club and stadium. Immerse yourself in the history of Hibernian FC, see the player dressing rooms, walk through the tunnel to the grounds and take a look at the historical memorabilia in the Boardroom and the Trophy Room.

SCIENCE CEILIDH — AN ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

In celebration of both the Royal Astronomical Society’s 200th anniversary and the 30-year anniversary of Care for Carers, we are delighted to invite you to our Science Ceilidh!

Featuring the award-winning Science Ceilidh Band, our inclusive ceilidh has all the traditional dances you know and love — plus exciting new dances infused with a twist of physics and space science.

No dance (or science!) experience necessary; everyone welcome.

Expect wonder, enchantment and a spectacle of colour this festive season as Edinburgh Castle becomes a ‘Castle of Light’.

Follow in the footsteps of Scotland’s heroes and be welcomed by stunning visuals and state of the art lighting installations. Watch as the history of this iconic landmark illuminates the very walls that saw it unfold.

A magical experience for all the family — prepare to be dazzled!

Please be aware that this location is hilly and uneven underfoot. The event is also highly sensory and is an outside evening event.
