• Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism.

• What organisms come to mind when you hear this term?

How does it occur?

• One way is by the chemical reaction pigment luciferin. An enzyme known as luciferase oxidizes the pigment causing the glow effect. Show students the chemical reaction.
