DAY 2 WORKSHOP OPTIONS
30TH APRIL 2019
Crowne Plaza
Hunter Valley
http://stem-nsw.com.au/conference-2019
DEEP DIVE WORKSHOP #1 – DAY 2 TUESDAY 30TH APRIL A) SCRATCH MATHS – INTEGRATED COMPUTATIONAL THINKING & MATHS
B) REIMAGINING MATHEMATICS
DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP PART A: 9:00am – 12:00pm The aim of this
workshop is to give participants an insight into the possibilities for integrating
mathematics with coding and computational thinking. The workshop will review
existing materials and walk through examples of classroom practice. I will also
have some time for questions, reflection and feedback.
DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP PART B: 1:00pm – 3:30pm What is mathematics all
about? The most common answer is that it’s about numbers and formulas. These
form the centre of mathematics, but to say that they’re everything is like saying that
Beethoven is the only kind of music that matters. There’s much more to
mathematics than symbols and equations, and this workshop will explore some of
the attitudes and ways of thinking that make mathematics a powerful skill in today’s
world.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP:
Are you interested in a new way of framing secondary education? At Kurri Kurri High
School we use a framework of REAL Projects to create new knowledge for learners.
We make learners and teacher co-creators of programs and assessment.
We do this through:
• changing the paradigm of teaching and learning
• transdisciplinary learning in Stage 4
• HUBS, pods and huddles, new learning for a new century
• 60 students in a HUB with a fresh look at pedagogy and the 4C's
In this workshop Tracey Breese, disruptive educator and Principal at Kurri Kurri High
School will work with the delegates to demonstrate how these innovative teaching
and learning paradigms could be applied in your school. She will provide practical
advice and experience from her year’s investigating and establishing a Big Picture
model of education at the Cooks Hill Campus of Newcastle High School.

This course is intended for technology teachers with little or no coding experience.
The workshop supports teachers implementing the Crack the Code unit of work in
Technology Mandatory Years 7-8. It focuses on developing the knowledge and skills
of the participants in coding for the use of Arduino and the MAAS Thinker Shield in
the classroom. Participants will receive a kit with the equipment they need to
complete the activities.
A laptop will be provided for the workshop. If you wish to bring a device, please
ensure the latest Arduino software is installed (Available free from this site
https://www.arduino.cc/).
Please be prepared to use the provided laptop if you have difficulties with your
personal device, as there is limited time in the workshop to troubleshoot problems.

DEEP DIVE WORKSHOP #5 – DAY 2 TUESDAY 30TH APRIL CRACK THE CODE
DESCRIPTION OF WORKSHOP:
Fast and Curious is an engaging and hands on unit of work that develops knowledge,
skills and understanding of data, digital systems and IoT (Internet of Things). This
project has been developed in partnership with Oracle developers. They have used
a Raspberry Pi to intercept Bluetooth data coming from Anki cars and use this data
to code the cars behaviours.
This unit demonstrates data in action and fits within the Digital Technologies
context of the new Technology Mandatory syllabus that is to be implemented from
2019.
While it has been designed to address the Digital Technologies context in the new
Technology Mandatory syllabus, this workshop will showcase the potential of this
technology for use in many different STEM based curriculum. It is recommended to
STEM teachers who wish to engage their students in fun and engaging teaching and
learning experiences.
Note: This is the first time this workshop has been available to all school sectors.
Previously, it has only been available to NSW Department of Education Schools.

5 syllabus.
In the GPS Cows workshop, teachers will develop the knowledge and skills to
implement the unit of work with students by:
• Learning about the history of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and how to use a phone app to collect data
• Gaining an understanding of the science and mathematics used to make GPS work
• Learning how livestock tracking data can be used in agriculture to improve management decisions on farms
• Examining a case study from a farm currently trialling GPS tracking devices with livestock and using a dataset from this property
• Utilising Excel and ArcGIS online to visualise and analyse livestock tracking data
