Anders Wijkman, Opinion Leader, Author, chaiman Ål, started off this theme by addressing the issue with the statement that “Conventional economy is on a collision course with Nature”. There is a need to move towards a circular economy.

Pär Molander, Head of Corporate Sales, Commodities, SEB Merchant Banking, started his presentation with the statement: QE or Growth, you can’t have both. For those that do not know what QE is, here comes the answer: (QE) is an unconventional monetary policy used by central banks to stimulate the national economy when standard monetary policy has become ineffective. A central bank implements quantitative easing by buying financial assets from commercial banks and other private institutions.

Tomas Nylund, CEO,Gästrike återvinning was the next speaker on this theme. He pointed out that the development of waste managament systems in Sweden has been very successful and the results are unique from an international point of veiw. Today, waste is looked upon and used as a resource rather than a problem.

Theme: WEEE Pascal Leroy, WEEE-Forum started up this theme. He meant that there is little information on type/composition of WEEE arising. This is a significant barrier to the advancement of sorting, separation, treatment and recovery of CRM which are dispersed with WEEE products and across the WEEE stream.

Isak Öhrlund, Project Administrator at Elektronikåtervinning i Sverige then took the stand and spoke of the challenges of WEEE management and producer responsibility in both Sweden and Europe.

Helena Castrén, Senior Responsible CSR Manager, Nokia meant that Nokia’s product creation is guided by life cycle thinking but that Circular Economy needs a dialogue and a global view across-industry.

Day 2

Theme: Sustainability

Ulla Grölund, Univ lector, Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, LTU opened up the second day of Future Circular Materials Expo.

Maurits Van Camp, Director Umicore, was the second speaker of the day and meant that a Circular economy requires a system-wide approach focusing on sustainable mining methods, efficient design and use, substitution of critical metals, and recovery of metals from secondary sources.

Jan-Olof Eriksson, CEO, Elkretsen, then took the stand and talked about sustainability and profitability prerequisites. He started off by talking about contradictions:

- The waste definition is a problem when it comes to resources. BUT

- A problem can become an asset over time.

- It is an individual issue

Roger Sundqvist, General Manager Boliden Rönnskär gave us then an insight of the new E-Kaldo plant that started its operation in January 2012. This has increased the capacity for recycling of metals from e-scrap from 45,000 to 120,000 tons per year.

Coffee break with networking

Theme: Circular Materials Economy Research Report.

After a nice cup of coffee Janis Salminen, VTT, started off the second theme of the day: Circular Materials Economy Research and talked about Recycling research in Finland.

Professor Britt-Marie Steenari, Chalmers then took the stand and raised the question if the vision Materials used in circular loops – was realistic: Each generation uses the materials in products but returns the materials to future generations and that preparations for recycling must be a part of the design of products and production processes.

Jonas Brändström, Vinnova, Then talked about the societal challenges driving research and innovation. He meant that in order to move into a more Circular economy there is a need for more investments in R&I, stimulate increased interaction in the system, global cooperation, challenge driven innovation and new business models.

Professor Conrad Luttropp, KTH continued on the topic with the conclusion: We need:

a) A new business model to handle the fact that cost and benefit are dislocated

b) Local disassembly closer to waste sources

c) Transport of material not waste products

Theme: Technical and commercial outlook Göran Carlsson, CEO Swerea Mefos, Started off the fourth theme of the day by showing their pilot plant and talk about the Swerea group.

Phär Oscár, Director of Business Development Stena Metall Group, he made a presentation about Enforcement and Compliance in the Recycling Industry, The conclusion of his experience is that:

Lennart Gustavsson, Chairman Georange, then took the stand and gave his thought around Recycling. The important thing is that we are able to use the metals that we have produced in a smart way and use them again and again. For it is in this context, the recovery industry comes in. We need to develop intelligent systems in which we ensure that the metals are recycled.
