Universal Design for Learning Addressing the Variability of All Learners
Date/Group
Day 1: UDL: Addressing the Variability of All Learners Day 1: UDL Presenters Workshop
Goals for the workshop:
To explore how UDL addresses the challenge of learner variability,
To discuss how to apply the UDL framework to practice
UDL Presenters Academy Goals To support UDL presenters as they begin to
prepare, customize, and deliver the UDL workshop: Addressing the Variability of All Learners.

Refer to page 7 in the Presenters Guide for workshop Key Concepts:
Variability is the rule – context matters UDL Guidelines UDL in Practice Tools and Resources
Topic: Learner Variability
Goal: To learn about current brain science in relation to thinking about variability in today’s classrooms Exercise:
Marshmallow Challenge: work with a team towards a common goal. Discussion prompt: with the clear goal of getting the marshmallow to the top of a structure, how was there variability within your team and between teams? Specifically, how was there variability in representation, action, and engagement?

Slides: 14 – 25
Goals:
Refer to Chapter 6, pages 131 – 136 in UDL: Theory and Practice for more information about Goals

1:00 – 2:45 Topic: Background information of CAST and UDL
Goal: To learn about the history of CAST, UD, and UDL
Exercise:
Discuss Universal Design and connection to UDL: identify and share examples of how design features in architectural design benefit everyone. How can this concept be applied to the design of curricular materials?
UDL Principles: overview of the UDL Guidelines and explore multiple representations:o Options for the Guidelines: 3 column
version, UDL Worksheet, Blank version, UDL Wheel, online versions
o Video on the UDL Guideline structure: (~2 min) CAST founder David Rose discusses the UDL Guideline structure

Video: UDL Principles and Practices - http://www.udlcenter.org/resource_library/videos/udlcenter/guidelines#video1
Topic: Introduction to the UDL Guidelines: Multiple Means of Representation
Goal: To discuss how to apply options for representation into lesson design for all students
Exercise:
Video showing variability in perception: (~2 min) Basketball video. Count how many times the players wearing white pass the basketball. Notice the variability in the counting!
Discuss strategies that you already use or that you could use to design learning experiences that support variability in the UDL guidelines: perception, vocabulary, and background comprehension
