Aims:
Learning English is your passport to easy and successful worldwide communication.
English is the international language for business, science, technology, internet, travel etc
and more and more people speak itas their first and if not first, second language.
Improving English helps you to meet new people, explain your thoughts, express your
feelings, share your ideas and make abetter social life.
Every one of us knows that the ability to recall the right word at the right time leads to
successful communicative process andthe failure to do so breaks down the whole
communication.
In schools, colleges and universities so much depends on the way you write and speak
from passing exams to teaching others,from making lifelong friends to starting a
rewarding job.
In business, industry and finance, you can be successful, build good relationships,
entertain new friends, and improve yourcareer opportunities by holding the incomparable
asset of strong communication skills.
Learning English also helps cultivate a positive sense of self-worth and understand and
respect other cultures.
Once all the students have reached the right level of fluency and flare in English
language, they can achieve equal access tocore academic curriculum.
The course is divided into four sections and aims for each section have been listed below,
not in order of priority:
Comprehension:
To comprehend the lesson by applying the methodology of skimming, scanning,
deduction and inference.
To help the students know the differences between the writing techniques of various
writers.
To make them learn the central idea or the gist of the passage
To help them write the answers in their own words.
To develop the art of summarizing the passage in their own words by helping the students
use one word for many as well aspicking up the key points from the passage to make the
passage precise.
To help them produce brief and correct answers that would be to the point.
Vocabulary and Expressions
To introduce new vocabulary words and their correct usage in sentences by first helping
they know the correct way of usingdictionary and thesaurus.
Use of Synonyms, homonyms and homophones would be brought to light by making
each student give their examples alongwith sentences.
To help the students use the right words in sentences according to correct situation.
To help them write sentences in such a way that the meaning of the particular word
becomes clear.
To make them learn the importance of ‘suffixes’ and ‘prefixes’ in word formation and the
change that occurs in a word wheneither of them is added to it.
To help them know various figures of speech like simile, metaphor, personification etc
and the importance they carry in aparticular sentence.
To help them know new words through different interesting word games that would be
played in the class.
Composition:
To help them learn how to write different forms of communications: Formal Letter,
Informal Letter, E mails etc in correct format.
To help them learn the correct way of paragraphing a text which would make them
havethe knowledge of Topic sentence, the opening paragraph, body paragraphs and
concluding paragraph.
To help them in writing ‘Narrative or Story writing’ through which they would learn:
Character development, dialogues,setting, and series of events, climax etc.
To help them learn how to write ‘Descriptive writing’ by the appropriate usage of
adjectives according to how they perceive with their five senses.
To help them know the usage of same tense throughout their writings so that they may
not make mistake by switching differenttenses.
Language and Grammar:
To help them in the reinforcement of ‘Parts of Speech’ that had been done in the previous
classes so that they may have a better understanding of the grammar that would be done
in the present class.
Revision of Verb tenses along with the introduction of ‘Simple Present Tense’ would
help them know the significance of different tenses along with their correct usage in their
sentences.
To help them know the significance of Direct Speech and how to correctly punctuate a
sentence.
To make them have the knowledge of Suffixes and Prefixes so that they may relate words
with them.
To help them know how and when to use proverbs and metaphorical terms in their
sentences and speech.
To help them in making less spelling mistakes, the students will be having regular
dictations in class.
Scheme of Assessment:
Mid-term and Annual Examination at the end of both the terms of 100 marks each.
Four Monthly tests will be conducted throughout the session, of 20 marks each.
Class tests will be conducted from time to time for the purpose of revision with variable
marking scheme.
Worksheets will be given for their practice.
Class Activities and group discussions will be conducted to make the lesson more
pleasurable.
Oral questions and answers sessions will be held to judge their understanding of a
particular topic.
Assessment Objectives:
Students will be assessed on the basis of their reading and comprehending skills.
They will also be accessed through group discussions that will be held from time to time
so that the students would develop confidence in English Conversation along with the
correct pronunciation.
Specified writing tasks will rules of comprehending a passage.
Help the students to improve their writing skills, sentence formation and punctuation.
Free writing tasks will be given to them to encourage their level of imagination.
Vocabulary exercises would teach them how to use words in correct context.
In comprehension the students will obtain meaning from the given text and it would test
their ability to read not only inbetween the lines but also beyond the text of the lines.
It will also help assess their ability to skim, scan and focus on the part of the text that
requires more attention and producebrief and terse answers according to the demands of
the questions.
