Description  of  Courses  Taught    Undergraduate  Courses

POSC  308-‐Avian  Anatomy  and  Physiology  (3.0  credits)—Anatomy  and  physiology  of  the

major  body  or  organ  systems  of  the  bird,  including  cardiovascular,  gastrointestinal,  respiratory,  endocrine,  and  reproductive  systems;  influence  of  the  environment  on  bird  physiology,  including  the  effects  of  stress.    Laboratory  exercises  include  dissection  and  microscopic  analysis  of  the  major  body  or  organ  systems  and  assessment  of  environmental  conditions.    Years  taught:    1998-‐present.    Average  enrollment:  47  students.    Students  receive  comprehensive  examinations  to  assess  their  understanding  of  physiological  systems  during  lecture  periods  and  practical  examinations  during  laboratory  sessions  where  they  are  required  to  identify  prominent  anatomical  features  of  the  bird.

POSC  381-‐Investigation  of  Professional  Development  in  Poultry  Science  (2.0  credits)—An

investigation  of  career  options  and  the  research  process  as  applied  to  Poultry  Science.    Formerly  offered  as  POSC  281-‐Sophomore  Seminar  (1.0  credits)  and  POSC  381-‐Career  Opportunities  for  Poultry  Science  Students  (1.0  credits).    Years  taught:    2002-‐present.    Average  enrollment:    35  students.    An  overview  of  the  potential  careers  available  for  Poultry  Science  graduates  is  presented  throughout  this  course  each  semester  through  presentations  by  outside  speakers  from  different  segments  of  the  poultry  and  food-‐producing  industries.  Since  this  course  is  also  a  writing  intensive  (W)  course,  strategies  for  improving  writing  skills,  as  well  as  the  correct  approach  to  assembling  resumes  and  writing  cover  letters  are  taught.    Feedback  from  industry  contacts  who  have  hired  recent  graduates  from  the  department  suggest  that  this  course  is  proving  to  be  beneficial  in  better  preparing  our  graduates  for  careers  in  industry.

Graduate  Courses

POSC  609-‐Avian  Physiology  (4.0  credits)—Basic  physiological  principles  pertaining  specifically  to  avian  species;  cardiovascular,  neural,  respiratory,  digestive,  endocrine  and  reproductive  systems;  physiological  experiments  use  various  avian  species  as  laboratory  animals.    Years  taught:    1998-‐2006.    Average  enrollment:    12  students.    Since  this  course  is  the  only  course  in  systemic  avian  physiology  offered  on  the  TAMU  campus,  it  is  frequently  taken  by  graduate  students  from  very  diverse  backgrounds.

      POSC  649  (cross-‐listed  VTMI  649)-‐Immunology  (3.0  credits)—Cellular  basis  of  the  immune

response;  relationships  between  inflammation  and  acquired  immunity,  MHC  and  cell  activation;  the  role  of  cytokines  in  immunoregulation  and  hypersensitivity,  vaccines,  and  the  mechanism  of  immunity  to  viruses,  bacteria  and  parasites.    Years  taught:    1999-‐present.    Average  enrollment:    23  students.    This  course  in  graduate  immunology  is  offered  on  an  every  other  year  basis  during  the  spring  semester.    This  course  provides  a  comprehensive,  yet  often  introductory,  overview  of  immunology  so  that  it  is  appealing  to  graduate  students  who  may  not  specifically  focus  on  immunology  as  a  major.
