A man after God’s heart

And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Acts 13:22

God knew He could trust David to do His will, because David loved God so much. However, Our human will must be broken in order to surrender to and fulfill the will of God.

Broken and contrite

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. Psalms 34:18-19

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Psalms 51:17

God has to literally break and crush the pride out of us in order for us to surrender to His will.

The shepherd boy

And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep…. I Samuel 16:11

David was the youngest and held the lowest position in society of a simple shepherd.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Psalms 23:1-3

Page 5: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

The lion & the bear

And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. I Samuel 17:34-35

David killed the lion and the bear in private. His trust in the LORD was amazing.

The LORD looks at the heart

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. I Samuel 16:7

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Matthew 23:27-28

Page 7: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Anoint him

And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward... I Samuel 16:12-13

David now anointed, enrolled in God’s school of brokenness to get his PHD in contrition.

David ministered to Saul

And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. I Samuel 16:21-23

Page 9: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Goliath

And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. I Samuel 17:32

Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee. I Samuel 17:37

Because David had the private victory of killing the lion and the bear, God gave him the public victory of Goliath.

Page 10: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Goliath

And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands. I Samuel 17:47

And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. I Samuel 17:49

Saul put David in position

And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants. I Samuel 18:5

David was only doing what Saul asked of him.

Page 12: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Israel’s new hero

And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick. And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands. I Samuel 18:6-7

Page 13: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Jealous angry kingAnd Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul's hand. And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice. I Samuel 18:8-11

That’s what angry jealous kings do.

Page 14: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Javelin dodger

And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand. And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night. I Samuel 19:9-10

When position and power become an idol you become afraid of losing them and you will with anger and wrath try to destroy the person that threatens your idol.

Page 15: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Page 16: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

400 joined him

David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him. And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. I Samuel 22:1-2

David did not recruit them, they came to David.

Page 17: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Who joined David?

• Distress: a narrow place, confinement, disability, anguish, distress, straitness, from the root: to oppress

Page 18: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

The wilderness

And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand. And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood. I Samuel 23:14-15

David had to rough it, to live like an animal on the run as Saul hunted him down over a long period of time.

Page 19: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David could have killed him

Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed. Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. I Samuel 24:10-11

Page 20: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Again the second time

Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time. And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless? I Samuel 26:8-9

David never did one thing to harm Saul or the Kingdom, he simply fled.

Page 21: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Saul hunted David

Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains. Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. I Samuel 26:20-21

Saul finally backs away from hunting David.

Page 22: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David given a home

Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day. And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months. I Samuel 27:6-7

Page 23: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

More hard times

And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire; And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way. So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives. Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. I Samuel 30:1-4

Page 24: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Lost hope and joy

And David's two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God. I Samuel 30:5-6

Now David’s own people were turning on him.

David encouraged himself in the LORD.

Remember, David is enrolled in the university of brokenness.

Page 25: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David recovered all

And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives. And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all. I Samuel 30:18-19

Satan is trying to destroy you, God is allowing it to test you. He is building character in you, and breaking your will.

Sometimes you think the devil has won, but God rebuilds the waste places of our lives.

Page 26: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David mourned Saul

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:……The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen! II Samuel 1:17, 19

Even though Saul hunted David for years trying to destroy him, even though Saul turned Israel against David with scorn and lies, (as mentioned in the Psalms) David never hated Saul.

Page 27: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul. II Samuel 2:4

And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months. II Samuel 2:11

Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker. II Samuel 3:1

Page 28: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David anointed King of Israel

So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah. II Samuel 5:3-5

David was 37 ½ years old before he finally was king over Judah and Israel. God spent David’s entire life preparing him to be king, in the university of suffering and brokenness.

Page 29: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

A man after God’s heart

I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. Acts 13:22

God had to break David’s will, so he would have the surrender to do the will of God.

And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Matthew 21:44

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Philippians 2:13

Humility

He has to break our pride in order to clothe us with His humility.

…for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: I Peter 5:5-6

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. James 4:10

David’s secret

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalms 1:1-3

He loved God with his whole heart. He delighted in the LORD.

Page 32: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David loved the will of God

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple. Psalms 27:4

Page 33: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David praised God continually

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psalms 34:1-4

Page 34: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David repented

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Psalms 51:1-3

Page 35: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David looked to God

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah. Psalms 61:1-4

Page 36: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David knew we are the sheep, God is the shepherd

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Psalms 100:1-5

Page 37: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

David could praise God because he trusted God

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Psalms 56:3-4

In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. Psalms 56:10-11

He trusted God even though God was putting him through pain, breaking his will.

Page 38: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Why did David trust the LORD?

He trusted the LORD because he loved the LORD. He loved the LORD because he knew that the LORD loved him.

..but faith which worketh by love. Galatians 5:6

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first loved us. I John 4:18-19

Page 39: David - Squarespace · David fled from the King that he loved, ministered to, ... to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down

Lesson • God might anoint and call you to a ministry years before you

actually begin serving in that position.

• God loves you so much, that He will put you through pain and suffering so He can break your will, crush your pride, so you will gain the humility to do the will of God.

• God might ask you to leave the natural kingdom, (ministry, job, friends, church) or where you were comfortable.

• Don’t scorn because you are scorned, and don’t hate just because you are hated. Always love and forgive.

• God will use people to come against you to test and try you, to break your will into submission of His will. Humble yourself under God’s mighty hand, trust him and praise him.

All things work together for good

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Romans 8:28-29

Remember the big picture is that God is doing all that He is doing to help conform you into the image, character, and nature of Jesus Christ.
