LCLS beam limits from the ASE

1680 W is 1 nC at 14 GeV at 120 Hz, Typical 2009 commissioning will be at ~100 W

These are the power levels used in shielding design calculations.

Undulator Complex Status

• Installation complete – Vacuum, Magnets, Diagnostics,

Safety Systems– Final alignment this week.

• Systems’ checkout– Controls and Physics checkout is underway.

• Safety Systems Initial Acceptance Tests– PPS, BCS Initial Acceptance Tests this week.

Outstanding Issues (11-25-08)

• Fire safety check-off– Fire systems commissioning through 11/26

• Final shielding– Final elements to be installed this week

• Punch list closeout (a copy is on the web)– Some items need pre-start completion

• Preparedness document sign-off– Final signatures are last-minute, inc. ASD

• Beam Authorization Sheet (BAS) sign-off (ASD, RP)

is the final link before operations

B4C

• Stoppers must be able to withstand the allowed

beam power (x-rays) indefinitely. B4C is placed on stoppers face to withstand the FEL beam • Damage threshold of B4C calculated to have a

safety factor of ~10.• Have a test apparatus to confirm viability,

with a B4C sample placed in the photon beam,

for testing at increasing beam power density.• Detailed testing plan needed prior to installing

Undulator magnets.

Summary

• The SAD and ASE for LCLS Undulator Complex commissioning are signed.• The Undulator Complex technical systems are installed and are being checked.• Safety systems are complete this week (some shielding installation and the IAT).

– Completion will be verified through the BAS.

• Accelerator Operations and maintenance will be done by experienced SLAC groups.• Plans are in place for the beam commissioning program.
