Personal notes Born in Oldbury, West Midlands (UK) lived in the Black Country until leaving for Manchester University in 1973 to study psychology. Sometime West Bromwich Albion supporter and speedway fan in the 60’s and 70’s. Addicted downhill skier, occasional guitar player. Married Shyamala a Malaysian OR nurse in 2002 (enjoyed it so much got married to her again in 2003). After 30 years in Manchester now living in Cupar, Fife with two bicycles, three apple trees and a surplus of rabbits.

Background After working as an Occupational Psychologist (rehabilitation, designing programmes for physically and psychiatrically disabled adults) I joined the National Council of YMCAs, founding and developing the (then) largest youth unemployment programme in the UK. Counselling young people, recruiting staff, and designing and implementing skills development for both adult staff and trainees formed the core of the project, alongside strategic business development. In 1984 I joined Scripture Union, an international charity, as a Training Officer, designing and delivering courses for volunteers and professional staff in a wide range of skill areas (working with children, customer care, counselling teenagers, time management, staff appraisal, presentation skills, strategic planning…). All courses and programmes involved mixed groups (the office secretary alongside the CEO) and the use of interactive and experiential learning. In 1992 I formed Creative Learning Associates, both as a vehicle for my own freelance work and as a way of joining together with other specialists to provide innovative and creative solutions to people-centred problems. Executive coaching programmes and surgical education projects became specialist areas with a client list ranging from large multinationals to smaller charities and voluntary groups. CLA continues but in 2003 as part of the move to Scotland and Dundee University I joined the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s team to take a lead on the development of leadership and non-technical skills programmes and also formalised my involvement with Orthopaedics as the project coordinator of the Orthopaedic Curriculum & Assessment Programme, leading the curriculum development project and supporting the BOA’s educational initiatives as their education adviser. In 2016 I ended my formal relationship with RCSEd. I continue to work on Training the Trainer and Curriculum Development programmes both in the UK and overseas.

Present portfolio Creative Learning Associates Consultancy, executive coaching programmes, customised team building. Education projects and programmes , in particular focussing on Training Trainers, Curriculum and Faculty Development. At present I have the privilege of working with Malaysian Universities, the Ministry of Health and others on the development of a curriculum for postgraduate specialist training which may be the first of its kind anywhere in the world. International Curriculum Development Institute A new project. The planning of training through the design and development of a curriculum is increasingly necessary, especially where nations and the organisations within them face increasing demands on the quantity and quality of healthcare alongside a shortage of resources to meet those demands. ICDI is being developed to support both the design and development of curricula in healthcare which make sense to both clinicians and patients.

Projects Throughout my career I have been privileged to be involved in innovative and emerging ideas and practices. I was working with Hewlett Packard as the external coach to their Test and Measurement Organisation before the term “executive coaching” had entered management thinking, I worked with Lotus IBM on their “Learning Space” project before Virtual Learning Environments became commonplace and over the past 20 years I have worked with a variety of surgical and medical organisations in the UK and overseas in developing their curriculum and assessment systems. There are many people who have written of, and taught about curriculum development but very few who have ever written one. The first full surgical curriculum in the world was published in the UK in 2005/6, I was honoured to be the lead author. The workplace assessment system now in use throughout UK surgery (and being trialled in other countries) is one to which I was a lead contributor and developer and the lessons learned from these innovative projects have been shared with interested groups and organisations across the world. Below is a selection of projects I have been or, am at present involved in: Training the Learners Training, in healthcare and any other setting is a partnership between the trainer and the learner. Trainees (learners) who have training in how to learn can not only get much more from their partnership with good trainers but also take responsibility entirely for their own learning when they need to. Training the Learners is a project working with postgraduate clinical trainees to equip them for learning in the “real world” of patient care. Curriculum development in healthcare Working with a national group in SE Asia to develop an interdisciplinary medical curriculum, providing advice and consultancy in other Asian countries to support assessment and curriculum development. Teaching skills in Anatomy Design and delivery of modules on the MSc Anatomy course in Edinburgh University. Developing a programme for future anatomy demonstrators and teachers.

European Curriculum Development Working with the European Board of Orthopaedics & Trauma and others to share lessons from the UK to support future developments. Orthopaedic Curriculum and Assessment Programme Building on the development of assessment tools and integrating them into a full competence-based curriculum for Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. The 2006 submission was welcomed by the Postgraduate Medical and Education Training Board as not only the first of its kind but also an example of good practice. Procedure Based Assessment The Procedure Based Assessment tool is the principal workplace assessment tool in UK surgical training. It has been developed based on work going back to the early 1990s. The project (ongoing) has involved not only the design and development of the tool but also implementation, faculty development and integration into an online portfolio Training the Trainers A two-day programme originally developed for RCSEd in 2004 that has been delivered not only in the UK but also in Africa (Rwanda and Malawi), Europe (Estonia),the Middle East (Oman) and Asia (Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia). More recently the programme has been re-engineered into a one day experience to serve the changing needs of clinical settings. New Consultants Induction A programme for senior surgical trainees and new consultants based on research conducted in 2002 into the needs of new consultants. Leadership & Educational Development Programmes (AO / ASIF Davos, Switzerland and worldwide locations) Work with the Swiss-based AO (Association for the study of Internal Fixation) group providing consultancy to the organisation as a whole and the design / delivery of specialised educational events for both senior leaders in the surgical community.

Testimonials “I first met David at a Training the Trainers course in Blantyre, Malawi in December 2006. I was immediately impressed by his professionalism and organisational ability. He is also an excellent communicator and gives much thought to all that he does. He is very innovative in his projects and has the ability to unravel problems into their constituent parts and come up with an orderly solution. I wish I, and my colleagues, had the ability to analyse difficult situations as well as David but at least we learn from his example!”

Robert Lane MS FRCS Eng FRCS Ed (ad.hom) FACS FWACS Hon Secretary General of the International Federation of Surgical Colleges

Programme Director for International Development & Past President Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland

Honorary Surgical Advisor to the Tropical Health & Education Trust (THET)

“Working with David is always stimulating and thought provoking. I have had the pleasure of working with David over nearly 10 years both in the UK and in recent years overseas. His approach to Training the Trainers, for example, is unique and highly effective; it cannot be delivered by anyone else with the same level of success. His experience on curriculum development is second to none built on 15 or more years of real life interaction with clinicians. That experience allows David to support appropriate innovation and application to diverse situations. There is probably no-one else in the UK who has contributed more to postgraduate medical education than David and his continued dedication should receive the plaudits it deserves.”

Professor Simon P Frostick, MA, DM, FRCSEng, FRCSEd (ad hom), FFSTEd, Professor of Orthopaedics,

University of Liverpool. “Your early contribution undoubtedly allowed us to define clearly how we were operating but, more importantly, the practical consultancy you have provided has helped develop a vision of how we wish people to function and grow within our team and to build a plan to actually execute. Too often my experience with consultants is they tell you what you know and don’t even provide a way forward - thanks for breaking the mould.”

“It is a true pleasure for me to write regarding the professional abilities and personal energy of David Pitts as an expert in many aspects of professional education and information transmission. Single-handedly, he has virtually changed the perspective regarding the teaching methodologies of an organization that has been considered the "gold standard" in the field of surgical education. I can say with certainty that David has had a greater impact on surgeons within the worldwide network of the AO Foundation regarding how they approach adult education than any individual before or after his involvement. Courses in all parts of the world reflect his personal impact and have greatly benefited as such.David combines a unique expertise, ingenuity, and an ability to engender respect from individuals who notoriously are difficult to change and often reluctant to accept new concepts.”

Jesse Jupiter MD Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery

Harvard Medical School “I have worked alongside David for the past two years in my capacity as Vice-President and latterly President of the British Orthopaedic Trainees’ Association. It is clear he is held in very high esteem when it comes to curriculum and assessment tools development, and orthopaedic trainees have been extremely lucky to have had an innovator like David working alongside clinicians in the British Orthopaedic Association. Working with him on a personal level has been a rewarding experience. Sitting on the curriculum development group, allowed me to witness his skills as a chairman. He communicates well to a group of varying knowledge and skill levels, and always took the time to give one-to-one advice and clarify the complexities of the work at hand. What impressed me most was his ability to see the situation from the trainees’ perspective and as a result he has been a key figure in developing a curriculum that is envied the world over.”

Emily Baird British Orthopaedic Trainees Association President

“We first utilised the services of David Pitts for our Coaching Programme in September 2003 for selected senior managers. With the success of this programme and the feedback received of David’s excellent skill as a coach, over the last 3 years we have extended the coaching support to line managers. David has provided a valuable coaching programme where individuals feel they can discuss issues in complete confidence. David helps them work through issues and if appropriate to put action plans into place.”

Susan Babb Human Resources Manager

Anritsu

“I have worked with David for over ten years. His role was to help new and experienced sales managers think broadly about their roles, their interaction with customers, their staff (particularly in personal development) and their home life. In this role he was asked to challenge the status quo and to encourage people to think and look on problems and situations from a different perspective. He was and still is greatly successful in this role and is regularly sought out for his help and guidance. David founded the practice of knowledge management in one of our sales divisions, assisting with the design and implementation of a system based on Lotus Notes and the Intranet. This required him to analyse the complex nature of our business processes and the knowledge needs of our sales and support teams.”

“I have known and worked closely with David Pitts since 1992 as an Education Consultant to AO International (AOI). Since he has worked with AOI his initiative and creativity have been paramount in developing the AO education strategy for faculty throughout the world. He rapidly identified the nuances associated with teaching surgeons and ORP how to teach, as well as adapting to the various cultural differences encountered within the AO organisation. His vision for the future of education was primarily responsible for the various Educators’ events held here in Davos. He has become widely known and respected throughout the AO surgical and ORP community. On a personal basis David is a very caring, enthusiastic and motivated individual. His willingness to share his knowledge and help others in an altruistic manner makes him a valued member of any team as a player or a leader. His contribution is always very much appreciated.”

Anne Murphy Director of ORP/Nurse Education, AO International

“David Pitts is an excellent communicator and a very good negotiator and I am always impressed by the way he is able to listen, observe and analyse situations. I have indeed used his coaching skills personally and he has helped me in my own development in the area of education. All the projects I have been involved with, with David have gone on to completion, which is very important. There are always innovative projects that David initiates. It has been particularly interesting to see him work on the personal development of small groups and individual doctors over issues around personal development, including time management, communication skills and organisation of their daily work. Many of these things we take for granted and I think David has brought a very fresh approach to this. I would strongly recommend him for of his ability to communicate. He has now a very deep knowledge of working with clinicians and the ability to gain their credibility, no mean feat, particularly with surgeons. ”

Professor David I. Rowley, B Med Biol, MD, FRCS Head of Academic Department

Trauma & Orthopaedics, Dundee University

“The day went very well indeed and delivered what I hoped it would. You covered a large number of ideas on the day and managed to knit everything together coherently in an engaging style.”

Neil Carroll, Customer Connections, Norweb Telecom “I have known David through his work particularly in Davos, December 2002, where he was one of the course directors. He led groups of surgeons and ORP in a very pleasant way, using new, stimulating and entertaining technologies and approaches to group management. He showed a great talent in pushing people to express their ideas, even not conventional, in front of the whole audience. Every participant felt a freedom to speak not often experienced in such meetings and enjoyed the way the course was conducted.”

Prof. Christian Fontaine MD, PhD, Centre Hospitalier Regional

Universitaire de Lille

“I have worked with David Pitts on numerous projects over the last 18 years. He has worked diligently and effectively at every level from one to one coaching to the development of a national curriculum. He demonstrates enormous enthusiasm for all aspects of education. David can be relied upon to pick out the issues that need to be addressed and focus on the most efficient and workable solutions. He has brought many innovative educational and assessment techniques to the surgical profession which have been adopted countrywide and internationally. He is a clear and inspiring presenter and speaker and always engages the audience with encouragement to really participate.”

Prof Phil Turner Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Head of the School of Surgery, North Western Deanery Chairman of CoPSS (Heads of Schools Committee)

“I have had the opportunity to work with David Pitts in the capacity as an educator of surgical science and surgical technique at many international education events. He has been the education expert and I have had an excellent relationship with him. He has been the guiding influence in introduction of new teaching techniques and ideas which have changed the way that we educate surgeons and nurses in surgical science. I have found him to be superbly qualified in his profession, easy to interact with and professional in his demeanor and presentation.”
