Introduction Early humans separated themselves

from animals by being able to make tools, clothing, fire, and they were smart. Humans learned to use tools, like sharp rocks and spears. Animals could use tools, such as sticks, but humans first learned how to make the tools. The animals didn’t make the tools, but the humans created their own tools.

Australopithecus afarensis Australopithecus means ‘Southern Ape’.

It was the first human. They were only a step away from apes,

and could not make tools. They could stand upright, unlike apes. The ‘Missing Link’ between apes and

man. The first one found was named Lucy. Couldn’t make fire, but if they found it

they would use it.

Homo habilis

Means ‘Handy Man’. Was the first tool maker, as they could

make simple stone tools, such as sharp rocks.

Sharp rocks were made by hitting a stone with another stone to create sharp edges and flakes.

Could not make fire.

Homo erectus

Means ‘upright man’. Homo erectus was the next step of

humans that came after Homo habilis. Much improved tool-making skills. Could make stone axes and knives. First hominid to make fire. First systematic hunters. Tools were all made out of stone.

Homo sapiens (Neanderthals) Name means ‘Wise Man’. Found in valley called ‘Neander Tal’. Stronger and had bigger brains than modern

humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) Hunter/gatherers. Created stone tools, bone needles, and bone

fishhooks. Sewed clothes with needles. Used stone spears to hunt. They made their tools by tying sharp stone onto a

wooden stick.

Homo sapiens (Cro-Magnon) Lived all over the world, expanded a lot more than

previous humans. Very smart, about the same as Neanderthals. Trapped mammoths with pits and sharpened

spikes. Built permanent homes. Good tool-maker. Made stone axes, knives, spears, harpoons, and

bows and arrows. Very good hunter, the bows and arrows made it

easy to hunt from afar.

Homo sapiens sapiens

Modern human. Means ‘thinking thinking human’.

Tools are very much advanced, from using bows and arrows to guns.

We have expanded from around a hundred thousand to 6.7 billion humans

Instead of using pickaxes, we use big machines to mine rock and earth

Conclusion There were many different kinds of

humans. Many died out, such as the Neanderthals.

Eventually though, the hominids formed one kind of human: Homo sapiens sapiens.

These humans are modern humans, and we will continue to evolve over thousands of years.
