david goldberg has lived and worked in dublin for nearly 50 years. he was born in Cork where his father gerald was once a Lord Mayor. however, he

has very strong connections to belfast, and regards this debut exhibition as a sort of homecoming. his mother sheila, uncles sidney and stanley smith

were born and brought up on Landscape terrace. his uncle sidney is the painter, portraitist and muralist who was very prominent in the late

1920s and 1930s. he left belfast in 1948 and went to live in London. he died in or about 1986. sidney was in the group of painters that

included tom Carr (a particularly close friend) dan o’neill who studied with him, george Campbell, Colin Middleton and others. there has

always been art in goldberg’s family.

goldberg studied law and took his call to the bar in 1967, practiced but found the urge to paint too strong. he studied with peter john garrard

pprba, neaC, rp over a period of time. he also knew george Campbell, arthur armstrong, tom ryan and john Coyle from whom he derived much

encouragement in the development of his painting.

goldberg is a painter of mood and atmosphere. he likes plein aire, although not all of these paintings are sur le motif.

all paintings available to view online.

the own art scheme is designed to allow anyone who aspires to owning or collecting art, regardless of how tentatively, to take their first steps into this life-long love. the scheme allows a collector or first time buyer, who meets minimal criteria like being a uK resident, over 18, in employment or live-in relationship with a working partner to effectively pay for artwork via direct debit with 10 monthly, interest-free installments. the scheme is so simple, affordable and straight forward that it seems almost pointless to not spread the cost of an art purchase this way. Many galleries have been operating the scheme in england for a number of years. since the gallery pre-empted the arrival of the scheme we have found that the option of 10 monthly payments, collapses the perceived barrier to purchasing a work of art, it further encourages first time buyers to the art market and repeat buyers and collectors to continue building and developing their collection. new art lovers discover how easy it is to get accustomed to the monthly payment and are further buoyed by the joy of collecting. it is our hope and expectation that the own art scheme will continue to encourage art lovers and aspiring art lovers to take their first steps into this life-long love.
