Throughout my time as a designer, I have learned a lot about developing a specific process that works for me. Like many artists, my work begins with paper and pen. Regardless of the size or nature of the project, I’ll always map out my thoughts – exploring word association, color palettes or by free-sketching whatever comes to mind. The degree of detail I include in my sketches varies greatly, but it helps to have something to remind
you where you started.

MIZZOURECMARKETING PHOTOGRAPHER
At the University of Missouri’s Student Recreation Complex – MizzouRec, I have worked as a Marketing Photographer for all four years of my time at Mizzou. MizzouRec has been an invaluable experience for building my skills as a photographer, and especially as a marketer.
Working in the Creative Department with a handful of both professional and student-staff members, I have had the opportunity to contribute to the MizzouRec NATION – a tri-annual award-winning magazine, design promotional materials for social media, and see my work published in large-form installations around the facilities – all with an amazing, creative team.

SHARED INKGRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN
As a Midwesterner that grew up in the suburbs, I’ve always dreamed of working in a big city. In the Summer of 2015, I was given the opportunity to make that dream a reality – in New York City.
Shared Ink is a full-service start-up ad agency based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As a graphic design intern, I contributed both digital and print materials for some of Shared Ink’s awesome clients. Clients I worked on included: Bounceboat; 17 Monitor Street; Sailo; Sacatelle; uDo Brush; Luknow.
Aside from Shared Ink’s clients, I was also able to work on self-promotional materials for Shared Ink’s social media accounts and for the redesign of sharedink.nyc.
DAILY TASKS
Creative brainstorming
Sketched and drafted ideas
Designed materials for clients
Pitching ideas to Creative Director
Logged hours spent on clients
Photo editing for social media
Instagram and Facebook photo posts
SKILLS DEVELOPED
Teamwork with other creatives
Speedy and efficient workflow
Editing from client critiques
Start-up business experience
Self-starting projects

Some of my favorite things that I made at Shared Ink were these self-promotional digital ads for Facebook and Instagram. Since it was for the agency, I got to have a lot of creative freedom and develop original ideas.

Shared Ink’s biggest account is with the premiere party boat of the Northeast, Bounceboat. Prominent artists that were featured on the main stage of this yacht were Chromeo and 50 Cent. As an intern at Shared Ink, I was able to create posters and print ads, social media and digital ads, and additional materials surrounding their performances.

Among promotional materials for upcoming performances, I also worked on the up-keep of Bounceboat’s Instagram and created an ad campaign for an event named “#bounceboatselfie.” The campaign centered around tips for taking the perfect selfie during your Bounceboat experience. As the designer behind this campaign, I worked to condense the text into precise tips and formulate a way of presenting it through Instagram. The result: nine posts with individual tips included in the graphic, followed by additional information in the caption.

The great thing about working at Shared Ink was the wide array of industries I was able to dabble in through their assortment of clients. Two clients that I particularly enjoyed were Sailo – a rent-as-you-need website for connecting consumers with boat owners, and 17 Monitor Street – a luxury apartment complex located in Brooklyn, New York. Most of the work I did for these two clients were related to social media, specifically Instagram.

KAEDENYCGRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN
While working as an intern in New York City this past summer, I was able to provide some part-time design help to KaedeNYC – a small, Japanese Kimono Fashion Consultancy.
At KaedeNYC, I worked on digital and print materials for their various social media outlets, and events that they hosted throughout the summer.
TASKS & SKILLS DEVELOPED
E-commerce & product design
Digital and Print designs
Cultural research in designs
In-house designer experience

I was tasked with refreshing KaedeNYC’s neglected Etsy. As a Kimono Fashion Consultancy, KaedeNYC’s main focus is in rental and styling services, not retail sales. However, an Etsy shop was the perfect way to move old product and bring in extra revenue. For this task, I focused on making KaedeNYC’s Etsy inviting and consistent with their identity. Simple changes, like using the same profile image across all social platforms, helped in establishing this brand’s identity.

THE MISSOURI HONOR MEDALFOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN JOURNALISM
THE JOURNALIST’S CREEDbelieve in the profession of journalism.
I believe that the public journal is a public trust; that all
connected with it are, to the full measure of their responsibiity,
trustees for the public; that acceptance of a lesser service than the
public service is betrayal of this trust.
I believe that clear thinking and clear statement, accuracy and
fairness are fundamental to good journalism.
I believe that a journalist should write only what he holds in his heart
to be true.
I believe that suppression of the news, for any consideration other
than the welfare of society, is indefensible.
I believe that no one should write as a journalist what he would not
say as a gentleman; that bribery by one’s own pocketbook is as much
to be avoided as bribery by the pocketbook of another; that
individual responsibility may not be escaped by pleading another’s
instructions or another’s dividends.
I believe that advertising, news and editorial columns should alike
serve the best interest of readers; that a single standard of helpful
truth and cleanness should prevail for all; that the supreme test of
good journalism is the measure of its public service.
I believe that the journalism which succeeds best – and best deserves
success – fears God and honors Man; is stoutly independent,
unmoved by pride of opinion or greed of power, constructive,
tolerant but never careless, self-controlled, patient, always respectful
of its readers but always unafraid, is quickly indignant at injustice; is
unswayed by the appeal of privilege or the clamor of the mob; seeks
to give every man a chance and, as far as law and honest wage and
recognition of human brotherhood can make it so, an equal chance; is
profoundly patriotic while sincerely promoting international good
will and cementing world-comradeship; is a journalism of humanity,
of and for today’s world.
SPORTS JOURNALISM INSTITUTE Training and internship program
The Sports Journalism Institute is a
nine-week training and internship
program for college students interested in sports journalism
careers. The Institute is designed to attract talented students
to journalism through opportunities in sports reporting and

departments nationwide.
The Sports Journalism Institute works with the National
Association of Black Journalists, Asian American Journalists
Association, National Association of Hispanic Journalists and
Association for Women in Sports Media. Funders include

websites and TV stations and networks around the country.
Leon Carter, an ESPN vice president and editorial director of
TheUndefeated.com, and Sandy Rosenbush, an ESPN event
news editor, will accept the medal on behalf of SJI. The two are
co-directors of the Institute.

Dear Kemper, Kemper has always been a beautiful museum for me and my family. When our first child, Eric, expressed an interest in art – we wanted to encourage his creativity. On a Saturday afternoon, we took Eric and the rest of the family to visit Kemper and had a truly amazing experience. Seeing the wonder and amazement through my son’s eyes was such a special moment that I would not have had without your help. Thank you so much for the wonderful art you bring to Kansas City, and for creating a place for adults, and children, alike, to experience great works of art. Eric has sense become very passionate about art, painting in particular and he’s exploring new classes offered at his school to further his understanding of the medium. Thanks, again.
Yours truly,Sarah, 36 – Overland Park
