About usYour vet has recommended referral for your pet for further investigation and treatment. It is impossible for any individual or practice to offer expertise and equipment in all areas of veterinary care, and practices are increasingly specialising in certain areas. At Mill House, we offer referral in cardio-respiratory medicine and surgery, imaging, acupuncture and dermatology, endoscopy and laparoscopy. As well as specialised equipment, we have 24 hour nursing cover on site and full hospitalisation facilities for your pet.
What can I expect? An initial consultation lasts at least 30 minutes (45-60 minutes for dermatology) and you should be prepared to leave your pet with us for a while or wait whilst we carry out necessary investigations.
We will discuss your pet’s problem with you, and a full written report and recommendations will be emailed, posted or faxed to your veterinary surgeon.
It may be appropriate for us to continue to monitor your pet’s progress if longer term treatment is needed, but we are unable to treat your pet or any of your other pets as a first opinion case for any other unrelated condition. This condition remains in place for 1 year from the date of referral. We are working solely by referral from your own veterinary surgeon.
Our full terms and conditions for referral consultations are available in a separate leaflet and on our website www.millhousevets.co.uk under the referrals tab.
Before you comePlease bring with you any letter and radiographs from your own veterinary surgeon, and bring a fresh urine sample from your pet if you can, in a clean rinsed container. Do not feed your pet on the morning of their appointment but do let them drink water. In most cases, please give your pet their normal treatments, unless noted below:
DermatologyFurther investigation may include intradermal skin testing for allergic dermatitis. It is ideal for current therapy to be withdrawn but this should always be under the supervision of your own veterinary surgeon, particularly if steroids have been used to control the skin disease. We are happy to discuss withdrawal of therapy with your veterinary surgeon prior to the appointment. Ideally current therapy should be withdrawn as follows:
• Steroids – stop for 1 month• Antihistamines – stop for 2 weeks• Ear drops – stop for 7 to 10 days• Avoid shampooing for 2 days before the appointment
Ultrasound biopsyAbdominal ultrasound examinations may show abnormalities that need biopsy for further diagnosis.
Before biopsy, we need to know that the patient’s blood clotting function is not compromised, particularly if liver disease is suspected. We can perform tests here or your vet can perform the tests and fax or email the results to us.
FeesFees should be paid at the time of consultation, and we accept cash, credit and debit cards. We are happy to give estimates and discuss treatment options fully with you. Fees are determined by the time spent on each case, dispensed medications, materials and consumables used. Please bear in mind that due to the unpredictable and complex nature of veterinary referral work, precise quotations are often difficult to give. We will however endeavour to keep you informed of unforeseen costs as they arise.
Insured patientsIf you wish to make a claim under your pet insurance policy, please leave a claim form with the policyholder’s sections filled in and signed appropriately. We will complete and send off your form direct to your insurance company, usually within seven days of receipt and we will send you a copy for your records. No charge will be made for completion of your claim paperwork.
As an additional service, entirely at our discretion, we may be able to arrange for your insurance company to pay your bill to the practice direct. If you wish to use this service, please contact our Accounts Administrator on (01553) 691610 at least three working days before your appointment.
We will need a valid copy of your insurance certificate and ask that you speak with your insurance company and give permission for them to discuss your policy with us. Settlement of any excess fee and non-claimable fees will be required at the time of treatment. Unfortunately, this service is not available for all insurance companies, please see our Referral Financial Information leaflet for further details.
Full Terms and Conditions are also on our website at www.millhousevets.co.uk under the referrals tab.
