I worked for SERA Architects and CO Architects on the Collaborative Life Sciences Building, which is being built on the south waterfront in Portland, OR(documents from CLSB are provided with the permission of SERA Architects)

My fi rst task on the project was setting up perspective renderings for the Portland Design Review Committee.
I worked on the Structure and Envelope permit set, laying out the exterior composite sheets, and cleaned up the line work on the drawings.

I worked for SERA Architects and CO Architects on the Collaborative Life Sciences Building, which is being built on the south waterfront in Portland, OR (documents from CLSB are provided with the permission of SERA Architects)
Once the exterior permits were submitted, I moved to the Interiors team, and took over the 1500 door schedule. I coordinated with hardware and security consultants, standardized the
doors used on the project, created details of many different interior elements, and helped to clean up the floor and ceiling plans
I also created and updated enclosure detail drawings for the Envelope package.

“TESTING THE DOUBLE SKIN FACADE: JAQUA ACADEMIC LEARNING CENTER”
I conducted research on the new John E. Jaqua Center for Academic Study on the University of Oregon campus. The double-glazed facade of the building begged for empirical study of its thermal and daylight performance. This study led to two papers, one of which was published and presented at the National SOLAR Conference 2011.

When the temperature readings did not follow my predictions, I looked for likely culprits for interference. The wind rose above shows the annual wind averages for the area, but the northerly winds are the predominant wind direction in the summer, leading to my theory shown in the “Observed Air Movement” graphic. ZGF and Interface Engineering took interest in this, and began research the following summer to verify how much difference operable shades would make.

For my thesis studio at University of Oregon, I designed an addition to the facilities at UBC, to facilitate the integration of their Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning departments. The existing facilities are scattered across campus,and the departments did not have any interdisciplinary programs.
UBC wanted sustainability to be a centerpiece of the design. My first task in the studio was to compare LEED Canada, LEED 3.0 and the Living Building Challenge. To take the best advantage of the natural resources available, I employed long, narrow East-West boxes. Sunlight could penetrate deeper, and natural ventilation could ventilate the entire width. In order to connect the different boxes, a north-south corridor with its own distinctive character connected the pedestrian mall to the south all the way to the plaza to the north. Laserre Hall, the current location of the Planning department, and some of the Architecture program was to remain. It is a building of some historical significance, designed by Thompson, Berwick and Pratt and built in 1962. It is a notable example of BC Modernism, and the school’s preference was to preserve the building’s character.

The northern bar was dedicated mostly to the studio spaces, with some multi-purpose rooms on the ground floor. The site was roated off of due south, providing a challenge for passive
solar design. In order to emphasize good passive solar design, I broke the south facade of the studio spaces so that a significant portion of the south facade faces due south for solar heat gain,
and more logical shading.
The sun space serves as a buffer for the solar heat energy in the warmer months, allowing the hot air to vent out the top, while serving as a solar heat collector in the colder months, venting the warm air to the interior. A heat recovery ventilator was
incorporated on the north wall, to keep the heat and moisture consistent while providing fresh air to the full length of the building. I learned about water wall inserts that are designed to be installed under windows, and incorporated these in the design, to help
balance the temperature further. These would be covered in the warmer months, to prevent excess heat, and exposed in the cooler months to help transfer solar energy into the studio space.
The existing Lasserre building needed both structural and thermal reinforcement. I solved this with a moment frame, welded to the existing concrete columns, which were reinforced with carbon fiber straps, to protect against blowouts.The moment frame became the host of a second skin, to provide an adequate thermal barrier outside the 1960’s concrete building.The existing studios have jalousie windows, which could be opened when needed to allow warmer or cooler air in from the cavity created between the two skins.
The middle wing housed most of the faculty offi ces on two fl oors, which opened to a double-height meeting space. The intention being that faculty from the three disciplines would be mixed in a semi-open offi ce plan, sharing offi ces, and meeting with students in the double-height space. The space that was open to the sun was shielded by shading devices, designed to block the summer sun, and let the winter sun in.The roofs of both the studio and offi ce wings were sloped to allow the best angle for mounted PV arrays.
The North-South connecting corridor ran all the way from the pedestrian “Art Walk” to the south through to the plaza in front of the Frederick Wood Theatre to the north.The corridor itself has a distinctive character, with wood accents, vertical slats shading the east and west glazing, and much of the vertical circulation. All of the collaborative spaces for students were in or adjacent to the corridor. Some of the distinctive character from each of the east-west wings bleeds over into the corridor where they intersect. Break-out spaces for the studios, A student lounge outside the faculty/student meeting space, a coffee shop on the entry level between the promenade to the east and the courtyard.From the Art walk to the south, a person could look through the entry to the corridor, and see through to the theatre plaza to the north.

Xi Xi Wetlands Preserve - Net Zero Design Charette
In the summer of 2010, I was invited with a group of sustainable design experts to China to design a net-zero visitors’ center for a wetland preserve. The twelve of us traveled to Hangzhou, and worked in some of the existing buildings on the preserve to design, calculate and model the facility. At the end of the 10 days we presented the design to the government of Hangzhou.

Our sponsor, a local news anchor and celebrity, in describing her vision for the project said that she pictured “postcards” of the facility and the area. We took inspiration from this to frame postcard-sized views of the rendered digital model for the presentation, first to her, then to the collective government of Hangzhou.
My primary role in the project was building the digital model, once the initial design was far enough along to start modeling. Two of us built the digital model in Sketchup, and then rendered the postcard scenes in Photoshop from views we cut from the Sketchup model. We each took one of the two main buildings and did the intial modeling, then combined them and blended some details. Then we took a dozen different views from themodel to render.I also spent time working onthe physical models, which were set up in thegovernment building wherewe made the presentation.
