Page 8: David and a Kingdom Divided

Things to Remember

• Israel has never had a king before• Saul is a simple man, never having had

authority before – he was from the least of the tribes!

• What might this combination lead to?

Page 9: David and a Kingdom Divided

The same old thing…

• Saul does some good, but he disobeys God– Sound familiar?

• He makes an offering before battle – this is a job only for the priests!

• He allows an enemy to live and spares the best of everything for his own benefit, but God told him to destroy all of it!

A new king for the people…

• David is king • He sees a woman bathing on another rooftop

(breaking a commandment!)• She finds out she’s pregnant and tells David• David tries to get her husband, Uriah, to come

home and sleep with her

Page 14: David and a Kingdom Divided

• Uriah is an honorable soldier and won’t go home to his wife so long as his men are out on deployment

• David sends Uriah to the front lines where fighting is most fierce so that he would die

• Uriah dies in battle• After a time of mourning, David takes

Bathsheeba as his wife

Page 15: David and a Kingdom Divided

David’s Successor

• Solomon, Bathsheeba’s son, would be the next king• When Solomontakes the throne, God says He will

give Solomon anything he wishes– What would you ask for if you had the chance?– He asks for wisdom

• Solomon is known for building the Temple in Jerusalem and his palace

• Like all of the others, Solomon eventually turns his back on God

• God raises up enemies against Solomon

Page 16: David and a Kingdom Divided

United no more…

• Read 1 Kings 11:11-13– Why does God say he will allow some of the

Kingdom to remain?• Read 1 Kings 12– Rehoboam – Solomon’s son and rightful ruler

• Foolishly doesn’t take the advice of the elders– The 10 major tribes of Israel rebel against him and

split from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin– Jereboam sought to make a place of worship and

sacrifice for the people so they won’t rebel• Idol worship – breaking a commandment – which one?
