The building was constructed in the mid-19th century by Rabbi David Ben Shimon, founder of the community of North African Jews in Jerusalem .

It was reconstructed in authentic Moroccan style - complete with an Andalusian-style garden, water fountains, carved and painted doors, alabaster carvings that are part of the Moorish décor , and colored original zellige* tiles .

The work was made by artisans specially brought from Morocco to Israel .

The center , which was officially inaugurated in June 2011, offers seminars, lectures, poetry readings, liturgy, exhibitions and other activities inside the building and in the garden.
