NR 09.05 - August 7, 2009YELLOWKNIFE, N.T. - From August 6 to 28,

2009, the Government of Canada will conduct asovereignty operation, the Canadian Forces’ Op-eration NANOOK 09, in the eastern Arctic. Thisoperation will see the CF demonstrate a visiblepresence with land, sea and air forces operatingin the Baffin Island region. It will include sover-eignty patrols, a military exercise, and a whole-of-government exercise designed to demonstrateCanada’s ability to operate in the North.

“The presence in our North of the CanadianForces and other departments shows our Gov-ernment’s commitment to protecting and demon-

strating control over the air, land and sea withinour jurisdiction, and responding to emergenciesin support of the territorial government,” said theHonourable Peter MacKay, Minister of NationalDefence and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.

This year’s operation will include an anti-sub-marine warfare exercise with Her Majesty’s Cana-dian Ships (HMCS) Toronto and Glace Bay, andHMCS Corner Brook, one of Canada’s four Victo-ria-class submarines. Land forces, comprised ofCanadian Rangers and the Arctic Reserve Com-pany Group from Ontario, will also deploy for-ward with the Navy and in Canadian Coast GuardShip Pierre Radisson. The Air Force will be flying

the CP-140 Aurora, CH-124 Sea King, CC-138 TwinOtter, CF-18 Hornet, CC-130 Hercules aircraft, whileTransport Canada will be flying the Dash-7throughout the exercise. Following the militaryexercise, government agencies will turn their at-tention to supporting Nunavut’s Emergency Man-agement Organization in their own exercise to testemergency preparedness in response to a criticalinfrastructure failure.

“Operation NANOOK 09 presents an ideal op-portunity to validate and improve upon our col-lective capabilities to operate effectively in ourNorth,” said General Walt Natynczyk, Chief ofthe Defence Staff.

Mr. Nijazi Muji and his family visited 14 Wing Green-wood to make a presentation in thanks and recogni-tion of the hospitality shown to Kosovo refugees whoarrived in Greenwood 10 years earlier. Mr Nijazi Mujihis wife Meliha, and his oldest child Dori(10) fledKosovo arriving in Canada 10 years ago. They havesettled in Halifax, Nova Scotia and had three morechildren, Vesa(8), Deilli(5) and Mali(2).

It was during this extendedperiod of intense conflict that“ethnic cleansing” drove mil-lions from the disputed Ser-bian province of Kosovo intoneighbouring Macedonia tothe south. Canada played animportant role in easing theburden of those escaping theconflict; close to half of the5,000 ethnic-Albanian refu-gees accepted during thisstrife landed at CFB Green-wood (with the other half land-ing at CFB Borden,) beforebeing housed temporarily byCanadian Forces basesacross Ontario and theMaritimes.

Now, ten years after thesuccess of Op PARASOL,Nijazi wanted to return toGreenwood from his home inHalifax to say “thank you.”With his wife and now fouryoung children beside him,Nijazi spoke in front of thecurrent 14 Wing Commander,Colonel Bill Seymour, theWing Commander during OpPARASOL, Colonel (ret’d)Brian Handley, and an audi-ence of about 35, comprisedmostly of military personnelwho were stationed at Green-wood at the time of the crisis

Forces overseas. “We knowthat our work, internationally,is appreciated,” he said, be-fore inviting Col Handley tospeak.

The former Wing Com-mander recalled the eventsthat unfolded a decade agoand reminded everyone in-volved how successful theoperation was, and how muchwork was involved to make itrun smoothly. “Ten yearsgoes by very quickly… Thoseof you here can remember itvery well.”

The small ceremony endedwith a group photo of all thosewho assisted in the refugeerelief efforts being photo-graphed with the Muji family,but not before the family was

presented with a watercolourprint of various scenes fromOp PARASOL. The original,painted by Anita Alpay to re-member the events in ques-tion, hangs in the GreenwoodMilitary Aviation Museumand is based on photographsfrom the time period.

Looking back, it’s clear thatCanada and the CanadianForces, including 14 WingGreenwood personnel and lo-cal volunteers, made an enor-mous impact on the lives ofpeople who lost much to theethnic violence plaguing theregion. Two thirds of the ap-proximately 5,000 asylum-seekers now call Canada theirhome, and Nijazi Muji is proudto be one of them.

Submitted by: Pamela GarrisonSeveral dancers from Mary’s Islanders Dance Troupe are

preparing for a dance experience of a lifetime. These youngdancers have been invited to participate in the Canada - CubaSports and Cultural Festival in Cuba from March 8th to 15th , 2010.

This program is specifically designed to enable children toexperience a comprehensive overview of Cuban culture andhistory from Columbus to Castro, with a focus on the study ofthe Afro - Cuban contribution to dance and music in Cuba. Thedance troupe will meet and perform with Cuban students andteachers. Additional performances will take place at public venuesarranged by the Cuban Ministry of Culture. While there, theywill have the opportunity to explore the climates and topographyof tropical rain forests, mountain terrain, cave systems and willobserve the life ways of rural communities in the Cubancountryside.

The dance troupe is especially looking forward to the time thatthey will spend with the Comparsa. Comparsa are the musical/dance group that compete in the processions during Havana’sCarnival. Members of the Comparsa will endeavour to share LatinPercussion and Afro - Cuban song with the troupe and will takethem to visit the famous Ja Café to see performances by topCuban musicians. This will be followed by a Latin danceworkshop.

Although preparing for their trip is taking up much of their

time, they haven’t slowed down with their summer performances.The highlights of which have been their performances for the

Local Dancers Bound for CubaHeart and Stroke Foundation, Cultural Dance Extravaganza atthe Bella Rose Arts Centre and Halifax’s, Dancing On The Docks.

This will indeed be an exceptional educational experience forthis talented entourage who are already proud ambassadors forNova Scotia and Canada after their performances at theInternational NATO Bazaar in Italy 2006, and in Disney World in2003 and 2008.

Congratulations are indeed in order for their Artistic Directorand Instructor, Mary Dunlop and her husband Larry who doesall the logistics for the troupe and to these talented youngperformers: Jacob Newcomb, Haila Pye, Jessica King, AlitaMacDonnell, Rosalie Dowling, Shelby Lutz, Idalee Steadman,Micayla Webster, Carly Floris and Kiana MacDonnell.

Our three memberships arebroken into three categories;Regular, Ordinary andAssociate. Below are thefollowing terms that separateeach category.

The GMFRC offers Emergency Childcare Services that willassist families during an emergency childcare situation. Ourgoal is to provide CF families with the tools & resources youneed to prepare for the challenges & emergencies this unique

lifestyle may bring. In order to support the CF member’s abilityto be available for operational duty, the family’s needs mustbe acknowledged & identified so we can prepare ourselvesfor emergency situations. For those CF families with children,Emergency Childcare Services will offer you the resourcesyou need for emergency preparedness.

This childcare plan is NOT the same as the “family careplan” form you are required to have on file with your unit. OurChildcare Plan requires more information- is used as a tool inpreparing for the family’s emergency childcare arrangements-and is kept on file with the GMFRC. We maintain a list ofscreened, qualified emergency childcare providers who willprovide childcare to our military families in the event thatyour childcare arrangements are not working. Specifically, wewill provide care for the following situations:• When the CF member is employed/deployed away from

home and the spouse/caregiver is unavailable due to ill-ness or any other family emergency

• When the CF member is required to report for duty on shortnotice and the spouse/usual caregiver is unavailable

• When a single parent or both parents are CF members andthey are unable to access the regular childcare provider ina deployment or emergency situation

• When there is illness of a child that would prevent a parentfrom accessing regular childcare arrangements for care at atime when the CF member’s presence at work is critical tothe military operation

• When there is a need for respite childcare due to the totalfamily situation- including the CF member’s work commitments

• When there are other circumstances not covered aboveand childcare is believed to be the solution to the problem(in these cases, approval must be given by the GMFRCChild Youth & Parenting Services Coordinator in consulta-tion with DMFS)

THE BUZZ...Well, 14 AMS has survived

another posting andpromotion season. There areonly a few postings left totrickle in from points acrossCanada and trickle out topoints west. The Sqn hasparticipated in many eventsover the summer even as theupper echelon within 14 AMSdrastically changed.

A Depart with Dignityceremony was held on June5th at the 107 Wing Air ForceAssociation for a long-timeCanadian Forces member whoalso spent a great deal of timeat 107 Wing, Sergeant (Sgt)Greg Spradbrow. Thisfunction was attended by theformer 14 Wing Commander,Colonel Joyce, the former 14Wing Chief Warrant Officer,Chief Warrant Officer (CWO)Hamalainen, the former 14AMS Commanding Officer,Lieutenant-Colonel (LCol)Garbutt, and the former 14AMS Sqn Chief WarrantOfficer (SCWO), CWO Rerrie.

Several 14 AMS memberstook part of the Decoration ofthe Graves ceremony inMiddleton that transpired on

June 14th. Master WarrantOfficer (MWO) AnneCampagna ensured that 14AMS was well represented atthis solemn event.

There were two SquadronMug Outs that took place onJune 26th and July 24th, wherewe bid farewell to ourdeparting members who wereventuring on to different partsof Canada or, in some cases,to different parts of the base.

We had a Change ofCommand Parade for 14 AMSon the 9 th of July 09 where wewitnessed LCol Garbutt passhis command on to LColFlynn. Welcome to 14 AMS,LCol Flynn!

We also had the 14 AMSSCWO Ken Rerrie step downand CWO Gary Pittman fromShearwater take over as the14 AMS SCWO or, as CWOPittman thought he wasbecoming, the new coxswainof the Sqn. Welcome to ourhumble Squadron, CWOPittman!

Members of 2Crew are quite sad to loseMWO Bryan Price from thecrew, but we’re happy he’ssticking around as the AMOChief. Coming in to fill his spotis MWO Chevalier, who we’relooking forward to meetingsoon.

As posting season rollsalong, we’ve seen a lot of newfaces arrive, including thenew Aviation (AVN)Superintendent, WO JohnLane, from Cold Lake, andAvionics (AVS) Supervisor,Sgt Dean Tulloch, from downthe road in Shearwater.

14 AMS Avionics Labs(AVS) – Cpl ChristopherMorris

Adapt and overcome. Thatseems to be the way for AVSLabs lately. As we prepare forthe shutdown of the lab, weare told that there will be fivemoves to relocate theequipment needed for L3Communications in Halifax totake over the second- (andsome third-) line maintenancedone in the shops. Thetentative timeframe to startand end the moves wereAugust, 2009 and November,2009. As it stands, they havenot yet commenced movingbut are expected to shortly.

We only have two peopleto report about this period.Corporal (Cpl) Tyler Feindelhas moved to the AircraftMaintenance ControlRecords Organization(AMCRO) section. Tyler ishappy that he gets to climb

The non-destructivetesting (NDT) shop has had anew arrival. Cpl BarryAngeline has just graduatedfrom the NDT1 course and hasarrived in Greenwood with hiswife and family. Cpl Angelinepreviously was a member of 8AMS Trenton. Everyone herein the shop would like towelcome Barry and his family

to the valley and wish themthe best of luck with their newposting.

On Tuesday August 4th,Cpl Ken Thompson wasappointed to MCplThompson. He has been amember of 14 AMS since 2005and, prior to that, a member of413 Squadron. Soon he will beposted to Shearwater andassume his duties as 2nd InCommand (2 I/C) of the NDTshop with 12 AMS. Everyonehere in the shop would like towish Ken and Lori the best ofluck in Shearwater.

During the month of July,the NDT shop here wastasked to support the NDTshop in Cold Lake. MCplMark O’Keefe made theswitch from the Aurora to the

F-18. While in Cold Lake, hewitnessed a hail storm thatdamaged several aircraft.Needless to say, he was keptbusy over the two weeks,carrying out ultrasonicinspections on the compositematerial in order to determinethe extent of the damage. Hefound it an interesting andrewarding experience.

14 Wing Imaging – PteMelissa Spence

Summer - and the postingseason - is drawing to a closeand we’ve welcomed a fewnew, talented ImageTechnicians to Wing Imaging.MCpl Dan Shouinard saidgoodbye to the army and toWainwright for awhile, buthe’s not new to the Wing. Thisis where he started his

illustrious career as an ImageTech. We’ve also welcomedtwo new sergeants: Sgt PaulGreen made the trip from ColdLake and Sgt Sue Herseydidn’t have quite as far totravel, coming to us fromOttawa. Finally, Cpl DonKirkwood also joined us fromour nation’s capital.

After three months inBorden, Cpls Mary Mechalko,Sue Howell, and ShaneRudderham are back to workat Wing Imaging. Theysuccessfully completed theirQualification Level 5 (QL5)course in July. Cpl VincentCarbonneau and I will bemaking our way over there inSeptember to do our QL5s atBorden, Ontario as well.

revoir” to a couple more of ourco-workers. Cpl Sue Howellwill be travelling a long way,all the way to the Pacific sideof our great country. The 2009 Terry Fox Run(Site # 1060) will be held inless than one month, onSunday 13 September 09which is the weekend prior toour annual Wing Welcome.Registration will take place atthe 14 Wing CommunityCentre at 12:00 p.m. where awarm up will be offered at12:45 p.m. prior to the officialstart at 1:00 p.m.

Individuals can eitherparticipate by walking,running or biking either the5KM or 10KM routesplanned. If you plan oncycling, then please note thathelmets are mandatory andyou will not be permitted tobike either route if you do nothave a helmet. If you do nothave a helmet you can stillwalk or run either route if youwish. Plus, please be awarethat participants under theage of 8 must beaccompanied by an adult.

2009 Terry Fox Run! Volunteers NeededFinally, it is important to notethat both the 5KM and 10KMroutes have changed sincethe routes will only travelaround the PMQ’s and Basebut will once again start andfinish back at the 14 WingCommunity Centre around3:00 or 3:30 p.m.

This is the second yearthat the Village of Kingstonhas partnered with14 Wingand with this greatpartnership, we expect thisevent to be even larger andmore successful than ever. Itis also our goal that thispartnership will increase theamount of donations that weare able to collect in supportof the Terry Fox Foundation!

Here we go with a recap of things over the past week or so.The 2009 NSGA’s women’s Bronze tournament was held atLinacy Greens Golf Club on August 18th under blistering sun.The competitors representing Greenwood were Sandi Wharry,Wanda Moyer, Sandy Adams, Gail Croucher and DorisSampson. All the ladies had good scores with Sandi andWanda shooting lights out to place our team in 9th placeamong the 21 clubs who took part. Wanda had a personalbest of 94...first time she broke the 100 and she did it in grandstyle. Way to go. Congratulations to all the ladies, whorepresented us well and we’re proud of you.

Men’s Night, August 18th: There were 44 golfers who golfedin that scorching heat. Wednesday Night Ladies, Aug 19th. There were 15 ladiesout, on another very hot evening: The winners were: 1st-Rose, Carolyn, Margie and Susan: and 2nd Sandra, Laura,Cyndi and Paulette. The winner of the 50/50 was Rose.

Despite those whopping high temperatures and Highhumidity 30 people showed up for our weekly Friday Night 2-Ball on August 21st. There were some new faces again...Iguess the word is out that the Greenwood Golf Club is the

place to be on Friday night. The Low Score winners for thenight were Dave Costin and Paulette Swindells, Finally...Paulette is in the winner’s circle, although she gave all thecredit to Dave. The Low putts went to Charlie Costin and DebMoulaison: High score winner went to Dallas Harrigan and anew comer Brian MacCullouch and the high putts went to hiswife Ida and her partner Dave Stoddart. Ida is a real newbie togolf and she was very nervous but as we all know...Fridaynight is not about golfing well... it’s about having fun. Thedate for the 2-Ball closing tournament is set... Sept 26th Thisyear we are going with a Hawaiian theme. So start searchingfor your best Hawaiian shirt, grass skirt and maybe somecoconuts. It’s always about fun so get into the Hawaiian moodand come out and have some fun. Remember that in order toplay and qualify for prizes in the tournament, you must haveplayed 5 times in regular Friday night 2-Ball. If you are notcertain how many games you have played, check with Dallas.The last regular Friday night will be September 18th. Alsoremember we are starting at 3:30 now in order to finish beforedark.

Ladies Club Championship: The Ladies Club championshiptournament was held 22-23 Aug. The second day of play wascut short due to Hurricane Bill. The weather forecast was forheavy rain and high winds but it was just misty and calm at8:00 a.m. tee time. The ladies showed a lot of courage witheveryone showing up and starting play on the second day.One group completed 9 holes at which time it was rainingheavily and the greens were beginning to flood. Since allgroups completed 6 holes it was decided to use the scoresfrom those holes in determining tournament results. Angela Dempsey receive an offer from the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada’s fora wish and surprised everyone with what she wanted. Her wish was for a saltwaterswimming pool.

When asked why she wanted a saltwater swimming pool, “she replied that she wantedsomething that the whole family could enjoy, something she could share with her friendsand it would be around for a long time to enjoy.

Angela was diagnosed with leukemia on May 19, 2008 and she has completed her firstyear of 2½ years of chemo treatments at the IWK in Halifax and the Valley RegionalHospital in Kentville. She will be going to Middleton Regional High School in September.

It was pointed out that saltwater pools are more environmentally friendly and use fewerchemicals, another bonus for Angela with all the treatments she has to go through.

The big smile on Angela’s face as the pool was going in was priceless. “It’s beenfunctional for about a week now and we are all very excited about it, especially with thishot weather we’ve been experiencing since mid August.

The Dempsey family includes parents Mike and Sue and daughters Jennifer, Sharonand Angela. Mike works at CE, hangar 5 as the UGSO & Trg O.

The Dempsey family would like to thank The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canadaand Holland Home Leisure for installing the pool, they did an excellent job and were veryprofessional with dealing with the Dempsey family. They would also like to thank all thepeople who donated towards Angela’s wish. We are very impressed and enjoy seeingAngela having a blast using the pool with family and friends.

Youth Idol will take place upstairs in theAnnapolis Mess from 4pm until 6pm onSaturday September 19th. This event is foranyone who is 18 years of age or younger whohave been waiting to showcase their vocalchords to the community. There is no pre-registration since registration will only be at4:00 p.m. on Saturday September 19th so be surethat you arrive on time to make sure you’re onthe evening’s bill.

We have a great group of judges who havean excellent ear for talent and who are anxiouslywaiting for all of you to take the stage! You

watch the show, you sing in the shower, youeven carefully practice when you’re homealone...It’s now time to step up to themicrophone and display your talent!

From behind the lens, Cpl Jasper Schwartz roams poolside at the World MilitarySwimming and Lifesaving Championships looking for the perfect photo opportunity.

“A good photo is one that is technically sound, and that has interesting action, orcolour, or composition,” he says. “Any photo that makes me stop and say Wow! orHow Did They Do That?”

Cpl Schwartz is hoping that one of the shots he has taken at this event will be agood submission for the annual DND Photography Contest. This will be his secondyear participating in the contest that is now digitally based, making it easier foreveryone to join in. He says it gives him a great reason to go out and take photosand encourages both professionals and amateurs to enter.

The DND photo contest is open to current DND/CF personnel and their families,retired personnel, and non-public fund employees. Divided into professional andamateur categories, photos can be submitted in eight categories: military life, familylife, sport, environment, animals, portrait, special effects and open.

More than $20,000 in prizes will be awarded among both professional andamateur photographer of the year, best in show and the Deputy Minister ’s award.The amateur and professional photographers of the year will be invited, with travelexpenses paid, to the awards luncheon at NDHQ this November.

Greenwood, like all of the 14Wing’s quality-of-life initiatives,remain somewhat of a secret tomany people who think ofmilitary bases more as a place ofwork and less as a place ofcommunity. In fact, the 14 WingLibrary has been in existencesince 1953 and is no mere readingroom on flight safety; it currentlyboasts close to 40,000 books,reference materials and othermedia, such as movies incassette or DVD format. Basednow at the AVM Morfee Centre,the library was up until the 1970sbased out of the former fitnessand sports centre and was also

housed in the current VPInternational building beforesettling in its current location.

The library itself servesapproximately 1,300 families inthe local community, living upto the Canadian ForcesPersonnel Support Agencymotto of “serving those whoserve.” Keeping the libraryrunning are the librarian, JudyMcCool, who has been a 14Wing employee for about a year,and Liz Tappen, who hasrecently been hired on as acasual employee but has beenvolunteering with the library formore than 25 years. The 14 Wing Library, itshould be noted, is open toeveryone, military and civilian,and offers free memberships. It’sopen most afternoonsthroughout the year and writtenmaterials can be signed out fora period of three weeks beforerenewal is necessary. Oneinteresting fact about thelibrary is that it is the benefactorof all of CFB Baden’s bookswhen the Canadian Forces leftGermany in 1993. Familiarization Visit

Thanks to the support of some very generous businessesand individuals Jillian Stymest was able to travel to NorthYork, Ontario to the National Championships as part of theNova Scotia Bantam Girls baseball team.

It was an amazing experience with some very competitivebaseball and one of the highlights of the trip being on the field atRoger’s Center with the Toronto Blue Jays as they did their pregamewarm-up and seeing their game against the Boston Red Sox.

Historic Aircraft that Playeda Significant Role in

Canadian Aviation Heritage

Beech T-34 Mentor Beech T-34 MentorThe Beech T-34 was the last

attempt by a small Canadianmanufacturer to maintain itselfin the aviation industry.Canadian Car and Foundry(CC&F) of Thunder Bay wasone of the smallermanufacturers in Canada afterthe war – its efforts to remainin the industry highlight theproblem of the period – asmall Canadian market andtoo many manufacturers.

CC&F had designed its ownaircraft in the 1930s and builtHurricanes and Helldiversunder license during theSecond World War. After thewar it built Harvards underlicense; however, this contractwas soon completed. Seekingnew licenses CC&F acquireda contract to build 34 Mentorsfor the United States Air Force

(USAF). A further contract for66 followed. In the UnitesStates Beech built 773Mentors for the Air Force andNavy, a type chosen in partbecause of its gentlehandling characteristics.

The Royal Canadian AirForce (RCAF) purchased 25Mentors as the servicerequired additional aircraft inorder to meet the needs of theNATO Air Training Plan. Theaircraft were used in a trial atNo. 4 Flying Training Schoolat Penhold, Alberta that wentfrom 19 July 1954 to 10February 1955. The Mentorwas not selected as it wasconsidered too easy to fly.During the course of the trial,

The Early Childhood Education Program at the GreenwoodMilitary Family Resource Centre (GMFRC) is a site-specificprogram, licensed by the Nova Scotia’s Department ofCommunity Services. It has been serving this communitysince 2002.

The program is designed to meet the social, emotional,cognitive, fine and gross motor needs of children. The programstrives to meet the unique individual needs of all children.

The curriculum provides developmentally age appropriateactivities that foster growth in all areas. Early literacy andschool readiness skills are incorporated into the program.Children are encouraged to participate and explore theirenvironment though art, music, cognitive activities, circle time,gross motor, and dramatic play. Children are encouraged toparticipate in the selections of topics for the in-depth studies.This provides concrete learning opportunities for the children.

This fall a new and exciting component, “Singing English”has been added to the E.C.E program. This program fostersphonological awareness/literacy skills, social skills, listening

and communication skills. This program helps children exploreand learn language through song.

The E.C.E program is separated into two groups: one foreach age level. Currently there is a 2.5 to 3 year old programand a 4 to 5 year old program.

Please note the start date for the E.C.E Programs.2.5 to 3 year old program begins on Tues., September 1/09.4 to 5 year old program begins on Wed., September 2/09Fall Registration for 2009-2010 is currently underway. Space

Elle ou il ouvre et ferme lesinstallations aquatiques, veille à la sécurité de tous les participantspendant qu’ils sont dans l’installation de la piscine et aide à maintenir lebureau de la piscine, le bord de la piscine et les aires d’entreposagebien rangés. La ou le titulaire du poste fait les inspections de l’installation,remplit les listes de vérification et informe le supérieur de tout problèmeen plus de participer à des réunions, à de la formation en cours d’emploi,à des cours pratiques et à des activités de club.Qualification :- Diplôme d’études secondaires ET de l’expérienceOU- Une combinaison acceptable d’études, de formation et d’expérience
