The Daugh-ters of the Revolution also were spon-soring a card drive for our soldiers for the holiday season. We collectedseveral hundred cards and letters. ABIG thank you to all the teachers,

students, and staff that contributed tothis wonderful cause. It will trulymake an impact on the lives of thesoldiers and their families.

What a Day!! November 19, 2009 will be a day we at SOES will not soon for

get—a day that was filled with excitement. It all began with our

SC children’s author visit with Kimberly P. Johnson. She jumpstarted the day with energy and enthusiasm about writing. We

learned so much about how to be a better writer: 4K, 5K, and first

grade students learned about rhyming words and using describing

words. Second and third grade students learned that writing doesn’

have to be a “BEAR” if they use Big Kid Words, Express more, usAdjectives to describe, and R eread for revising and editing. Fourt

and fifth grade students learned how writing is “FAST” if they Fo-cus, use Adjectives for details and description, use Strong verbs fo

action and energy, and use good Transitions. Kimberly had stu-

dents and teachers alike participating in her sessions; she had everyone up on their feet, thinking furiously about words, trying writing

games, and just plain having fun.

But our fun did not end there…Kimberly Johnson joined us thaevening as part of our Literacy Night festivities. This time she

wowed parents with her energy and enthusiasm, and had them up

and moving around as she demonstrated how parents could helptheir children at home. She taught us that it is all about having a

good Attitude at home, helping our children Brainstorm, and havin

a Commitment to one another. Before the end of her session, we

were all standing, arms draped over one another’s shoulders, de-claring an oath to lift one another up and help one another out. We

were ready to take on the world after her session!

Then it was time for Literacy Stations, which were another highlight of the evening. Students from every grade level were show-

cased as either performers in the Reader’s Theater Station or au-

thors sharing their writing in the Writing Café Station. These stu-dents made both teachers and families extremely proud! We also

had guest readers who read aloud to families, a storyteller, and a

Writing Workshop Station where families could write together. Needless to say, the evening was a huge success and a great time

was had by all!
