PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Student Achievement
BrainSTEM
Congratulations to Kinga Jaworska (Year 9, Everard House), Stephanie Kervin (Year 9, Stewart House), Paige Mihaljevic (Year 9, Stewart House), Stephanie Richards (Year 9, Andrew House) who have been selected to take part in the Brain STEM program in collaboration with Swinburne University.
BrainSTEM aims to engage students with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and showcase some of the many different paths available to them, should they choose to pursue higher education and a career in the field. The program also offers the students valuable opportunities, allowing them to:
• Connect with scientists in our universities
• Identify an innovative / interesting idea
• Work on the idea over a period of eight weeks
• Build on their problem solving skills, creativity, curiosity
• Engage, inspire and innovate
• To hone their teamwork skill in groups of 4
• Travel to the University and explore what it is like to be part of a university
• Be mentored by experts in their fields
• Link their academic learning in school with applied / experimental / hands on learning in the university.
This is a great opportunity for the four girls to expand their learning through exploration and research. I know that they will be excellent ambassadors for our school and our community. I know that they already have some great ideas for their project and I will be encouraging them to write something for a future edition of this newsletter.
I take this opportunity to thank BrainStem and in particular its Managing Director, Mr Sid Verma, Swinburne University and Mr Rob Coventry who will be supporting the group from the school end. I am certain that they will have a truly enriching experience.
Eltham Music
Congratulations to all the Strings students that were part of the Blackburn High School/Eltham High School Community Orchestra that participated in the Royal South Street Competitions on Friday 26 August and came 1st. This is an outstanding achievement on the part of all the students and we can be very proud of them and in the way that they have represented both schools. SCHOOL CALENDARweek, I have to say that it was fantastic to see how these two groups of students came together and worked collaboratively in support of each other towards a common goal. This relationship, having now been established is one that we need to continue to nurture in years to come.
I take his opportunity to thank the students but even more importantly to thank the staff that came up with this vision and worked hard to make it a reality. In particular I wish to acknowledge the skill, talent and musicianship of the Director of the Orchestra, Dr Ingrid Martin who is a well-known figure in the Eltham Music Department, having conducted the Eltham High School Symphonic Band on numerous occasions as well as having organised and led the Symphonic Band Tour to China in 2010.
This is an excellent result and a great effort on everyone’s part.
I further congratulate all the students in the various String Ensembles that participated in the Royal South Street Eisteddfod on Saturday 27 August. They all performed really well and had a great time. I congratulate also their teachers and their conductor, Miss Amberley Bremner.
A number of other ensembles will be performing at the Eisteddfod this week, including the Intermediate Band, the Junior Jazz Band, the Jazz Band , the Stage Band, The Concert Band, the Percussion Ensemble, the Clarinet Choir the Saxophone Ensemble, the Flute Ensemble and of course the Symphonic Band on Saturday 3 September. I wish them all the very best as they venture out during this very exciting time.
Just hot off the press, I have been informed that the Intermediate Band and the Percussion Ensemble were both awarded First Place in their division of the competition. I congratulate all the students and their respective conductors. Well done!
Tournament of the Minds
I take this opportunity to wish our Tournament of the Minds Team all the very best as the students engage in the State Final this coming weekend. I did include detailed information about the team’s success in the last edition of the Newsletter but I wanted to wish them well with this next stage of the competition. I look forward to hearing of their experiences and their learning.
Redevelopment of the Eltham Leisure Centre
I wish to keep you informed of where we are at in relation to the planned Asbestos Removal works At the Eltham Leisure Centre that I communicated to you through the Compass Parent Portal, yesterday afternoon.
After having been informed of the plans, I was in immediate contact with the Shire of Nillumbik to voice my displeasure and concern around the prosed works scheduled to begin on Wednesday 31 August, potentially spanning for the next two weeks. Furthermore, I contacted the Education Department, The Mayor of the Shire, The CEO of the Shire and our Local State Member.
I have requested that the works be postponed until the term break. I was given no assurances but the CEO did promise that he would investigate the situation and contact me by the end of today with a response and a possible new plan to move this agenda forward.
Up until the publishing of this newsletter I have not received any information. I hope to do so before the end of the day, at which point I will inform the community of any decision that has been taken via the Compass Newsfeed.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT VCE Practise Exams
In the upcoming term break we will be running a formal practice exam period from Monday 19 September through until Thursday 22 September.
Exams will be scheduled in all subjects and as a school we expect that all students undertaking examinations in Unit 3 and 4 will take up this opportunity and participate.
We believe that undertaking the exams will aid students’ revision, provide them with a more realistic experience of what they will encounter in the final VCE exam and assist teachers in targeting appropriate feedback and revision activities during their final weeks of classes in Term 4.
We understand that the notice for this initiative is relatively short, however we believe that any disruption to plans that it may cause is worth the anticipated benefit to students the experience will provide.
Should you have any queries following the publication of the schedule I encourage you to contact either Senior School or myself here at school.
Subject Selection
Students in Years 8 - 11 have made their subject selections for 2017 and the process is now underway to determine the curriculum programs which will run next years and to create courses for students. At this stage, if there are any queries or concerns regarding 2017 courses, they should be directed to the relevant Sub School. Thanks to all students, staff and families for the work they have undertaken on this complex process so far.

PRINCIPAL INTERNSHIP Hello to the Eltham High School community. My name is Colin Burke, and I am the Senior Campus Principal at Mill Park Secondary College, and during terms 3 and 4 I will be completing a four week Principal Internship at Eltham High School.
The Principal Internship is one component of the Unlocking Potential, Principal Preparation Program run by the Department of Education. In short, Assistant Principals from schools around Victoria are paired up with an experienced Principal such as Mr Sicari, and take leave from their home schools to work in a host school. As such, I will be shadowing Vincent Sicari, and working as an Intern Principal here at Eltham. During my time I will be working with staff and students in a number of different areas, hoping to contribute and help out where I can as well as observing the learning, culture and leadership in the school.
So far I have been warmly welcomed by all of the staff, students and parents that I have met, and am sure that I will be able to learn a lot whilst here. Thanks to the Eltham HS community for allowing me this opportunity.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Year 9 Exams
During week 8 of Term 3 (Aug 29 - Sep 2) all Year 9 students will undertake exams in English and Maths. Students studying Indonesian or French will also do an exam during that week. The philosophy behind the exams is that students will benefit from some experience of the formal exam process, and that focussing on the core, year long subjects will provide an informative experience without impacting unnecessarily on their other subjects. Information regarding the content of these exams will be provided by the relevant classroom teachers, and information about the exact time will appear on students compass schedules.

CAREERS Year 12 - Open Days 2016 and VTAC accounts

The processing fee of $32 needs to be paid by 29 September after which the fee will increase a number of times up until December. The fee does affect a student’s capacity to add or delete courses up until the closing date of 21 December.
Victoria Police Work Experience Program 2017 (Year 9, 10 and 11)
Interested students should submit a statement by email and outline their interest in the Police Force, what they hope to take from the placement and any other relevant information.

Year 9 Work Experience 2015 : Monday 5 - Friday 9 December
Year 9 Students are required to complete a one week placement from Monday 5 – Friday 9 December. Students can access forms through the Careers website at:
www.elthamhighcareers.com
or from outside the Careers Office. There is the standard Placement Form along with a Transport/Accommodation Form, if necessary. Students have also been provided with a list in PDF form of previous employers, by occupation, to assist in finding a placement. Forms need to be returned by Friday 25 November.
Please note, students who are not 15 years old by 5 December will be restricted to placements at a kindergarten, pre-school or primary school. Alternatively private arrangements can be made by the family, but please pass on the information prior to the placement. For students competing in the Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup they are able to complete their placement at another time prior to or following the scheduled week. SPORT Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup
The Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup will take place from Sunday 4 utill Friday 9 December.
Students have been given information regarding Australian Schools’ Cup. Any student who missed out can collect a copy from the PE office or download from the Eltham High volleyball web page. Just go to downloads for the info you require. Students participating will need to pay a deposit when they return their “ T-shirt order form” by the end of term.
T-shirt Design competition
The T-shirt design competition was won by Jess Field (Year 11 Andrew House) (entry number one). This design should look great on this year’s T-shirt at National schools cup.
Trials for the 2017 GMVA (Greater Melbourne Volleyball Academy) program
Trials for the 2017 Program are coming up. There are multiple trial dates below for flexibility, athletes are encouraged to attend at least 2 trials to give themselves the best chance of selection for the new program starting on Monday 14 November.
GMVA has training groups for athletes from 12 years old through to 23, so the chances are , we can help you with your development and reaching your goals.

The Year 9/10 Boys and Girls hosted the Final of the Northern Metropolitan Region for Basketball against St Helena.
The Girls played first getting off to a good start through some terrific defense and ball movement, leading at half time 32-7. The girls accelerated through the second half through Ashleigh Smith (Year 9 Andrew House) (18pts) and Abbey Toohey (Year 9 Rutter House) (15 pts) winning the game 74-21.
The Boys got off to a great start leading the game 11-3, however begun struggling with the height of the St Helena team and found themselves behind at halftime 16-25. St Helena maintained their lead with 3 minutes to go leading 35-26. The Boys found something through Jameson Wood (Year 10 Stewart House) (9 pts) and Tyler Wallace (Year 9 Stewart House) (9pts) leading the revival. Only to fall short 36-35 in what was an incredible effort.
Congratulations to both teams and good luck to the Year 9/10 Girls who will represent Eltham High School at the Northern Metropolitan Zone Finals later in the year.

SCIENCE VCE students invited to watch free space film and meet an astronaut!
IMAX Melbourne is thrilled to announce the launch of an all new event series called ‘IMAX Bright Young Minds’ aimed at providing young people with an educational and entertaining afternoon out at the Melbourne Museum precinct at no cost.
The first event will include a screening of the smash hit space documentary film ‘A BEAUTIFUL PLANET 3D’ and a Q&A session with visiting US Astronaut Marsha Ivins.

DRAMA Shakespeare’s Macbeth
The senior Drama Ensemble presents MACBETH in 3 acts and 3 genres on Tuesday 6,Wednesday7,Thursday8andFriday9ofSeptemberat7pm. A high paced comic interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the play races from sci-fi cliches to gritty film noir, ending in a western. This show has them asking “what wickedly funny thing this way comes?”

Melbourne Fringe Festival
I’d like to alert you to three upcoming performances at the Melbourne Fringe Festival that will be presented by Eltham High Drama. All performances will be in the New Ballroom at Trades Hall, corner of Lygon st and Alexander parade in Carlton.

I would strongly urge you to attend one or more of these events, and to bring your child along to see and understand the direction and ambition of the school’s Drama program. High quality touring performance is what sets the EHS program apart from other schools, and the Lygon Street locale means that you can combine the show with coffee, pizza or gelato to have a pleasent afternoon or evening out.

ART Montsalvat Art Excursion
Art and Photography students from the Studio Arts Unit 4 course were in for a treat when they visited Montsalvat last Thursday.
The focus of the excursion was to get an insight into Art Industry - in particularly the logistics of running commercial exhibition spaces, the liaising between galleries and artists and the curatorial exhibition design process. The event started off with students visiting the exhibition on show at the Barn Gallery
Deborah Halpern and Artek Halpern-Laurence – ‘Continuum’
On show were the photographic works of Artek and the sculptural glass and mosaic works and latest neons of Deborah Halpern.
The title of the exhibition Continuum evolved from the concept of the exhibition. Deborah at the beginning of her career had her inaugural exhibition and initiation into the art world by showing her work in an exhibition with her mother. Now it was time for her to introduce her son Artek as an emerging artist.
For Eltham High students this exhibition was also a continuum as Artek, who is currently undertaking a Photography Bachelor of Arts at RMIT only last year graduated from Eltham High School. He kindly met us at his exhibition and students could get an understanding of what’s involved in planning and organising an exhibition in a commercial setting.
After the barn gallery visit Jeannette Davison, the Arts Manager of Montsalvat welcomed us and explained to students her role and responsibilities as Arts Manager.
The second part of the excursion was hosted by the Arts Project Manager of Montsalvat Susan Reddrop. Susan is a sculptor in residence who predominantly works in glass and photography. Susan showed us the Montsalvat grounds and her two artist’s studios. She gave an insight into her glass practice from mould making, casting and kiln work. She also focussed on the importance of considering the safe handling of materials and OHS in a workshop. To see how artists work and experience artist’s workshops with all its potential traces of the creative processes left a big impression on students and staff alike. The history of Montsalvat is so very present in these spaces.

STUDENT SERVICES Free Parenting Skills Program for Resolving Teenage Behaviour Problems
A three-session program for parents and carers at Banyule Community Health, 21 Alamein Rd, West Heidelberg on 29 August, 5 September and 12 September at 1.30pm - 4pm.
Learn:
• Some common ground shared by parents & reasonable expectations to hold about adolescents
• New understandings of adolescence
• A three-option model & flow chart for decision-making
• Self check-in, first - for parents.
• Building relationship with your teenager and making the best of your non-crisis conversations with them
•Skills for tough conversations for handling those problems you just can’t ignore

Youthfest
As you probably know Banyule Youth Services annual Youth Festival ‘YouthFest’ is fast approaching and we are hoping to make this one the best ever for the young people of Banyule.
It would be great if you could assist us to promote YouthFest to the young people you work with - we would be very appreciative if you could include this information in your school newsletters.
‘YouthFest is a huge FREE festival held annually by the Banyule City Council Youth Services team in Macleod Park (opposite the train station) for young people aged 12+. This year it’s on Sunday 11 September from 12 - 5pm & features over 30 LIVE BANDS from the area, rides, a massive sport and skate area, henna art, photobooth, festival body art, jewellery making plus lots of fun workshops and much, much more! Please also note that Youthfest is an inclusive festival with a number of physically accessible and sensory friendly aspects included (more info available on our website). A prayer tent and halal food options will also be available. - please see flyer for more details.
$3 Slide Night at Watermarc
Youth $3 unlimited waterslide night at WaterMarc 1 Flintoff St, Greensborough on Friday September 16, from 6 - 9pm for 12-17 year olds
Slide night $3 entry includes - Unlimited use of the slides and pools, a DJ playing all the best tunes, a photo booth to take home pictures of you and your friends and temporary tattoos. Fully supervised - please see flyer for more details.
