Student Achievement:
I congratulate Noah Raz (Year10, Rutter House) and Ruben Hayes (Year 11, Everard House) on their participation in the Victorian Schools State Swimming Championships at MSAC the week before last. Both boys represented our school admirably. Whilst neither Noah nor Ruben came first in their events, both boys faced the state-wide competition with determination and resilience to do their very best. Both of these are qualities that we would like to see all of our students develop during their time at Eltham High School. This was a great effort resulting in a great outcome for both boys and the school. I wish them all the very best as they continue to engage in the sport.
Welcome:
I take this opportunity to welcome into our learning community the following staff members:
Ms Angela Olah (Biology/Science) and Ms Audrey Dean (English) and Miss Antoinette Pileio (Reception). I wish these new staff all the very best and a very positive experience during their time here with us at Eltham High School.
Banyule Youth Summit:
Three of our students will be representing our school at the Banyule Youth Summit on Friday 6 May which takes place every two years. Ruby Evans (Year 11, Rutter House); Gabe Smyth (Year 11, Rutter House); and Nic Perichon (Year 11, Andrew House) will attend the event which is hosted by the Banyule City Council.
Students at the Summit discuss topics that they are interested in with like-minded students from other schools. Together, they come up with a set of recommendations for Council and other organisations to consider implementing.
Sixteen recommendations that were proposed at the 2014 Youth Summit were implemented. These included a forum to address gender equality, a Life Hacks book for Year 12 students, a leadership group for young African/Australian women and two discos for young people with disabilities.
I am sure that our three young people with be outstanding ambassadors for our student body and for our school and I wish them well as they engage with this initiative.
School Athletics Carnival:
Congratulations to all the students and staff that participated in the 2016 Athletics Carnival. It was a fantastic day and the weather was just ideal. Everyone had great fun and a number of personal bests were achieved as well as breaking a number of previous records. I wish to acknowledge the work of our Sport Co-ordinators, Nick Cooper and Bree Pascoe, as well as thank all of the PE staff

Victorian State Budget:
I am very pleased to inform you that in the most recent State budget, funds have been allocated to Eltham High School for the planning stage of our School/Community Sport Precinct.
Eltham High School is currently engaged in a range of discussions and conversations with our Local State Member Vicki Ward, the Shire of Nillumbik and a range of sporting organisations in planning for the development of a Master Plan aimed at the development of the sporting facilities at our school for both school and community use. I have to say that I am really overwhelmed with the good will that has come our way from our local sporting organisations, the Shire and local schools. I wish to thank the Principal and School Council President of St Helena Secondary College who continue to provide valuable advice on this strategy based on their own previous experience of having taken this agenda forward within their own community. The development of the sporting facilities at Eltham High School aims to meet the needs of a range of young people in the Nillumbik areas irrespective of whether they attend our school or not. The school will benefit from such a development during school hours and the community will do the same after school hours.
The planning group is at the stage of appointing a Consultant to undertake all of the consultation work and to move the agenda towards the development of the Master Plan. The funding allocated to us in this year’s State Budget will be put to good use to achieve exactly this.
I wish to acknowledge the great work, commitment and leadership of our School Council President, Mrs Nicki Hauser, who chairs these meeting. I will keep you informed as the project moves further ahead.
Living Spirit Fellowship:
Applications are called from Year 10, 11 and 12 students to participate in the ‘Living Spirit’ Fellowship.
The Greensborough RSL Sub-Branch established the Living Spirit Fellowship in 2010 because it wanted to nurture younger generations to understand the sacrifices made by many men and women of the Australian Defence Forces in ensuring the great freedom we enjoy today is never forgotten. The Fellowship provides fort eh successful applicant and his/her guardian to join an escorted group for an 8 to 10 day tour of Thailand and Myanmar which includes the ANZAC Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass on 25 April 2017. Students are required to make a submission in accordance with the Application Form that includes a Questionnaire section.
Further Information can be obtained from Mr Robertson, Humanities Key Learning Area Co-ordinator or from Mr Laurence, Student Growth & Leadership Leader.
Eltham High School Working Bee:
A big thank you to everyone who attended last Sunday’s Working Bee. A great deal was achieved with many hands at work. I once again commend the work of the Grounds Committee and thank John Coates for his organisation and attendance on the day (even though it was his birthday). I look forward to the next one later on this term.

new eltham High Careers website
At eltham High school Pathways and transition is an important part of your child’s educational experience.
As such i would like to announce the creation of an eltham High school web based career support site.
it can be accessed at www.elthamhighcareers.com with the majority of menu links open access. However, there is also a dedicated student area where your child can create an account and take advantage of various activities and production tasks. in there you will find interest and occupations quizzes, a resume format, digital portfolio access and many more useful tools. when your child creates their account have them use their school email address and a password will be generated for them.
the site has information for all year levels with the full functionality of the site becoming more appropriate as students move into year 9. the student account remains accessible across the life of your child’s high school life.
i would encourage you to have a look at the site and if there are any questions regarding its use please feel free to conatct me on 9430 5113 or at [email protected]
