AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION UNION NT MEETING: Thank you for your support on Wednesday afternoon with making alternate arrangements for your children during the AEU NT meeting. I apologise for the late notification - although largely beyond our control, we do realize the inconvenience it caused to many of you. SCHOOL WALKATHON: Over $6500 has been raised so far from last week’s

very successful event. The students, indeed everyone involved, entered in to the spirit and fun of the event, despite the rather oppressive weather. The younger students walked around the school boundary and the older students to Lake Alexander and back. The event was well organized with a very strong emphasis

on safety and responsible behavior. Once again, our superb Fundraising team excelled themselves – as a school community, we are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteer workers, with their efforts benefiting every student in the school. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved in any way. DARWIN SWIMMING SPORTS: Well done, Parap Swimming Team, on gaining 2nd place in these annual Sports at the Casuarinas pool last evening, just 20 points behind Essington School. As always, our team members were enthusiastic, great team members and good sports. Thanks again to Ms Bond for her excellent organizational and team support work. Take care Dr Michael B. (Mick) Myers Principal

MORE HIGH ACHIEVING STUDENTS OF PARAP PRIMARY SCHOOL:

Hollie Johnson, a Year 4 student, has won a dance scholarship to attend the

Utopian Dream in January 2011. The Utopian Dream is a multicultural

dance festival held in Coffs Harbour, NSW, with the best of the best

international professional choreographers, performers and pioneers of

Dance. Well done, Hollie.

Last week, we shared Olivia Fleming’s great news about winning the Year

5 and 6 Poetry prize in a competition conducted by the Fellowship of

Australian Writers NSW. Here is Olivia’s winning poem:

The Spider’s Ballroom Olivia Fleming

A graceful spider dances round

Her legs are long and elegant Weaving a silver ballroom

For there she beckons her prey

She runs and leaps Her one step routine

3

Is she a whisper in the wind? Or is she a graceful black widow?

As twilight fades and the night begins

She keeps up her weaving The youthful young grass

Lets off it dew And gently suspends it on the spider’s ballroom

As day breaks the widow’s work is done

A million dew drops Drape the widows’ work

The morning sun entangles the web Sending out A ripple of colour

To awaken the rest of the world But the black widow never stops dancing

Talking to Children About Sexuality

Parents and carers play a vital role in communicating with children about sexuality, however, we know that many parents have doubts about how to talk to their children about sexuality, and what is appropriate for children of different ages. A research project currently underway at the Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland and Family Planning Queensland is looking at how parents communicate with their child about sexuality, and what support they would like in teaching their child about sexuality. We are seeking parents of 3 to 10-year-old children to share their thoughts in an online survey, which takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Please visit the website at http://exp.psy.uq.edu.au/childsexuality to find out more and take part in the survey.

For more information about the project, email: [email protected]
