    seven-volume work,

    "

the editorial work upon it was wholly Kunth's,and Baron von

    BARNHART: DATES OF THE NOVA

    GENERA OF

    appear

    that the volumes

    contained about

    89, 98,

    9I,

    63, 86, io6

    and

    I I9

    signatures espectively; after

    which they merelyremark,

    "

    [The sheeting of

    the

    French records

    is a mystery to both

    of us]."

    It is well

    known,

    or

    ought

    to

    be, that the

    "

    Nova genera"

    appeared simultaneously n two editions,

    one of folio size, the

other n quarto. It is not so well known,

    except to those who

    have tried to

    verify eferences

    n

    the wrong

    edition, hat

    the two

differ idely n pagination the only printedmention of this fact

    which have

    seen

    is

a brief note by Dr. Otto Kuntze,* and he

    does notseem to

    have

    had access to

    a copy of

    the

    fourth olume

    of the folio

    edition. The matter n the two editions s the same;

    they were ssued

    in

    the same

    number

    of fascicles

    36),

    and at the

same time; and theplateswerealike in the

    two editions, xcept

    for he

    width of

    the

    margin; but,the quarto

    page being

    much

    smaller,

    he text extended over a

    greaternumber

    of

    pages,

    so

    that

    each

    quarto

    fascicle onsisted f

    many

    more

    pages

    than

    the corre-

sponding foliofascicle, nd the quartovolumes are thicker han

    the

    folio

    ones.

    Messrs.

    Sherborn

    and

    Woodward described

    the

    quartovolumes; nearly

    ll of their

    uotations

    from he

    "

    French

    records refer

    o the folio

    edition;

    it

    was for

    his

    reason that

    they

    were

    mystified.

    The

    "

    Bibliographie

    de la

    France," upon

    which

    they

    were

    obliged

    to

    rely

    almost

    wholly

    for

    the

    list

    they give,

    repeatedlymentions

    he

    quarto edition, nd

    in

    many

    ases

    specifies

    the

    "

    sheeting of

    the

    quarto parts;

    it is

    difficulto

    see how

    they

    could

    overlook this

    fact, lthough

    t

    may

    well

    have

    added

    to their

    perplexity.

    The folio edition

    seems to

    have been

    prepared

    so that

    sub-

scribers to the entire series of

    "

    Voyage

    "

    reports might

    have

    them

    of uniform

    ize;

    the

    quarto edition,

    hat botanists

    might

    secure this

    particular

    work

    at a

    reduced

    price.

    The

    latter, rob-

    ably

    because

    of its

    cheapness

    and

    consequent

    greater ccessibility

    to

    the

    average

    student,

    s

    the one almost

    invariably

    cited

    by

    botanists;

    it is

    the

    one

    always

    referred

    o

    by

    Kunth

    himself,

    n

    his later

    works.

    While

    convenient,

    his

    practice

    is not

    strictly

logical; for, s the fascicleswere issued withoutbreaking igna-

    tures,

    hose numbered

    correspondingly

    the same text in

the folio and in the quarto form.

    In

    many

    instances,n order to

    determinewith exactness

    the

    date

    of

    publi-

    cation of

    a new genus

    or

    species, t would

    be

    necessary

    o find

    ut

    whether t first

    ppeared

    in

    a folio

    or a

    quarto

    fascicle.

    A

    table

    showing thegenera and

    species concerned,

    with

    the

    original

    place

    and date of

    publication,mightprove

    useful

    n

    determining

    ome

    question

    of priority; but such a

    list would be

    of

    very doubtful

    value until

    we are

    more

    certain than

    we can be at

    present

    of

    the

exact pagination f everyfascicle. It is very mportant,s men-

    tionedby Sherborn

    nd Woodward, that any one

    possessing the

    originalfascicles, r

    any of them, hould

    submit them to

    some

    bibliographer

    who

    would

    publish a

    careful

    escription

    f

    hem;

    but

    it

    must not be

    forgotten hat contemporaryvidence

    s

    thze

    est,

    or

    a

    fasciclemay appear to

    be

    in

    its original

    form,

    when

    actually

    -altered n

    important articulars.

    Before

    proceeding

    to

    a consideration

    f the

    probable

    contents

    of

    each

    part,

    t

    may be well to

    take

    a

    general

    survey

    of

    the

    pagi-

nation, ignatures, tc.,of the completedvolumes. In this con-

    nection t

    must be

    remembered hat

    the

    quadruple title-page

    n

    each

    volume took an

    entire uarto signature or two

    folio

    ones,

    while

    these were counted in

    numbering either

    he

    signatures

    nor

    -the

    pages. In some

    cases the French

    journal

    seems to

    have

    counted

    the title-pages n giving

    the number f

    signatures n a

    -part, n

    other cases, not; and

    the uncertaintyn this

    respect,

    togetherwithtne

    fact hat the

    title-pageswere

    probablypublished

    with

    the

first art of most of the

    volumes,but with he

    last part

of one or two, causes most of the trouble in definitelyssigning

    certain

    pages

    to

    each fascicle. It must

    also be

    borne

    n

    mindthat

    a

    single sheet forms

    ourfoliopages, but

    eight of quarto size, so

    that

    while

    the

    quarto

    volumes and fascicleshave

    more pages than

    -the

    folio,

    hey have fewer

    ignatures. The

    plates and title-page

    dates

    are

    the same in both

    editions;

    it is

    only in the text that

    theydiffer.

    D.

    It

    will

    be noted

    that these five fascicles

    followedone

    another

    with

    unprecedented apidity;

    and

    "thereby hangs

    a tale."

    On

    the 26th of

    October, I8I8,

    in orderto fix the date

    of

    publication

    of this

    volume,

    Kunth

    presented

    a

    complete copy

    of

    the

    text to

    the

    Academy

    of Sciences

    of Paris. It consistedof loose

    sheets

    of

    the

    folio

    edition,

    nd had a

    manuscript itle-page,

    n

    which

    was

set forth hefact hatthe printing as begun in September, 8I7,

    and

    completed

    in

    September,

    8I8.

    At thistimethe

    publication

    of Volume

    III had

    only just begun,

    and

    Kunth had no

    idea

    of

    offering

    olume

    IV

    to

    the

    public

    until

    t

    was

    reached in its

    turn

    after he completion

    f

    Volume

    III;

    in

    fact,

    he

    plates

    of

    Volume

    IV had

    not

    been

    engraved.

    Yet

    Kunth hurried he

    text

    through

    the

    press,

    nd took

    this method f

    securing

    ts

    advance

    publication.

    Henri

    Cassini,

    one

    of

    the members

    f

    the

    Academy,

    had

    de-

    voted

    his leisure

    "

    for he

    past eight

    or nine

    years,"

    as he

    tells

    us,

to the studyof the Compositae, nd was at that timerecognized

    as the

    foremost

    iving authority upon

    that

    group

    of

    plants.

    Volume

    IV of the

    "Nova

    genera" comprised

    the

    Compositae,

    HUMBOLDT,

    BONPLAND AND KUNTH

    593

    and the

    Compositae

    nly;

    was it

    any wonder,

    hen,

    hat

    Cassini

    re-

    garded

    the

    "

    extraordinary recipitancy

    of

    Kunth,

    n

    presenting

    this

    copy

    to the

    Academy,

    as a

    decidedlypersonal

    affair

    Cassini

    criticised

    Kunth

    for

    ssuing

    the

    work n this

    way,

    in

    loose

    sheets,

    with

    manuscript itle,

    rid without

    lates;

    in

    the folio

    form, oo,

    "

    qui

    n'est probablement

    onsacre

    qu'a

    un

    petit

    nombre d'exem-

    plaires,"

    while

    the quarto

    is

    the one more

    generally

    distributed

    and

    usually quoted.

    But

    especially

    did he

    protestagainst

    the

recognitionfthismethod fpublication, s it contained no guar-

    antee

    that the work as

    finally

    ssued to the

    public

    would

    be identi-

    cal

    withthe

    copy presented

    o the

    Academy.

    Kunth

    insisted that Volume IV was

    printed

    simply

    because

    thefundswereavailable and the

    manuscript

    ad been

    completed

    or

    several

    years;

    he

    pledged

    his honor

    that he

    work

    as

    finally

    ssued

    to the

    public

    would be

    identical

    with the

    copy presented

    to the

    Academy,

    except

    for he alterationof one

    short

    and

    unimportant

    paragraph

    to which

    Cassini

    had

    objected;

    and he

    further

    molli-

fied the latterby presentinghim with a copy of thevolume in

    dispute,

    on

    the first

    f

    December,

    I8I8. On

    his

    part Cassini

    agreed

    to

    accept

    the

    latter

    date as the

    actual

    date of

    publication.

    A delicate

    question

    is here involved. We

    cannot

    nsist

    hat

    this

    volume was

    not

    published

    n

    I8I8

    because

    it was not

    offered

    or

    sale

    at

    that

    time,

    for some

    works whose due

    publication s

    never

    questioned
