Power Outage – Phone Contact With The College

Last Friday, the College was without power throughout the entire afternoon and as a result

of this, many ‘normal functions’ of the College were disrupted. The most significant dis-

ruption that would impact on families is the usage of our telephone system. When College

power is out, College telephones are unable to work and although a phone call to the Col-

lege will still appear to be ringing (for the caller), the ring does not come through to us. In

instances of power outages, Office staff are contactable on our mobile phone. The College

mobile phone number is 0429587729.

In instances of future prolonged power outages at the College, Office staff will forward a

text message to all families to inform them of the situation.

College Council – Special Presentations

College Council met last night for our May meeting, and were delighted to have 2 special

presentations. Our first presentation was conducted by Year 11 student, Ethan L, along

with our VCE Software Development teacher Mr Clayton and P-4 Co-ordinator Mr

Vernon. Ethan spoke of an impressive project that he is undertaking as part of his Software

Development studies, and thoroughly impressed with the detail and professionalism of his presentation. This project

involves our College’s Year 1 class and is aimed at improving the level of communication between the College and

parents in terms of student work.

Our second presentation revolved around our Primary Maths Science Specialist Program and was delivered by our

program coaches Miss Pilkington (Science) and Mr Kidman (Maths). Both coaches outlined the aim of this pro-

gram and spoke of the improvements that are being made to the facilitation and delivery of Science and Maths cur-

riculum at a P-6 level. This program was applied for by the College in 2015, officially started in 2016 and sees both

Miss Pilkington and Mr Kidman receive specialist coaching and an allowance of time throughout the entirety of

2017 to work with current primary maths and science teachers to improve the teaching and learning of these curric-

ulum areas of the College. Whilst funding for this program ceases at the completion of 2017, the aim is to have a

positive flow-on effect for the future of all students beyond 2017.

NAPLAN Testing

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 have been completing NAPLAN tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this

week, with the testing period concluding tomorrow with ‘catch-up tests’ for any Year 3, 5, 7 or 9 student who was

absent on a day of testing. I would like to congratulate all students involved in this testing, on the way in which they

have conducted themselves during the testing period. Thanks are also forwarded to all families for the support they

have provided their children during this time.

2017 AIP

Throughout 2017, College priorities have been identified in accordance with the departments FISO (Framework for

Improving Student Outcomes) model and will see staff lead the following 8 points –

Review and redefine the East Loddon Best Practice Model and embed it through a program of coaching and class-

room observation

Develop high level of staff consistency in creating authentic assessment tasks to allow all students to achieve their

potential

Develop a whole school curriculum plan which aligns to the Victorian Curriculum

Improve attendance rates of students with high level absenteeism

Define and document the roles and responsibilities of professional learning teams

Review, define and document a distributed leadership model that outlines roles,

responsibilities and accountabilities for all teams and staff

Refine the performance and development process to align with the new SSP and AIP

Review and document the organisational structure of meetings

Piano Lessons at the College

For those who are unaware, the College has a specialist piano teacher who attends on a

weekly basis to take individual students for piano lessons. If this is something that you

believe your child may be interested in, please make contact with the College Office to

discuss this further.

Happy Mother’s Day

A Happy Mother’s Day wish is extended to all mums, ‘grans’, ‘nans’ and female figures and

role models who are integral in the lives of the students of our College. You play a very sig-

nificant role in the lives and education of our students and we hope that you are all able to

have a great day this Sunday!

I hope you have a great week.

Year 2/3 IT students During the last two sessions we have been working towards creating a small gift for our Mums for Mothers Day in IT. Please when you son/daughter arrives home today give them a friendly reminder as they have something they have created in IT (held within an A4 envelope). We have endured laptop updates, log in failures, power outages and more to make this happen. There are also small gift cards that are a work in progress, as time got the better of us. I suggested to students this could be a home work task before Sunday. Thanks, Miss Byrne

Deutsche Nachrichten

This week has been very busy in the Deutsch Klassen. Klasse Preps have been singing ‘Es sitzt ein Frosch’ with Herr

Grὔnfrosch. Klasse 1/2 are studying Verkehrsmittel (transport) this term and this week they have been singing bus

songs, “Die Rἃder vom Bus” (the wheels on the bus) and “Wir fahren heut fort mit’m Omnibus’ (we are going with

the bus today). Klasse 2/3 are studying the topic Clothes this term and this week they have been learning the names of

certain Kleidung. Ask the students what Hosen, Socken and a BH are? You might get a giggle from them. Klasse 3/4

asking fellow students, Wann hast du Geburtstag? Klasse 5 und 6 are continuing to learn about Kleidung(clothes).

Klasse 7 are studying Die Familie (the family). Klasse 8 are working on Monaten and Geburtstage. Klasse 9, 7 and 6

are all thinking about ideas for The German Schools Film Festival. This Year the teme is-“Deutschland im Jahr

3017” (Germany in the Year 3017).

Reading Clubs

Prep Letter in Focus

The Preps are learning about the letters: ‘d’ and ‘I’. They are also exploring the

‘oo’ combination which can be said as ‘oo’ (book) and ’oo’ (moon).

Prep Words To Fluency

Preps are consolidating ‘look’ and ‘see’ as their words to fluency.

Literacy Hint- Getting Knowledge Ready

Don’t rush into reading, prior to commencing the text improve your child’s chances of success by asking questions such

as:

What do you think the book is going to be about?

What words do you think are going to be in the book? Talk about synonyms for the words they suggest, for example

rock (stone/ pebble).

There are other prompts we will explore over the next few weeks but these questions would make a great starting point,

especially for younger readers.

To Ponder

Reading ability is like a muscle, if you don’t exercise it often, you will not maintain the same level of reading ability as

you get older. Usborne Books

thank you all for being respectful of this, and well done to

everyone who participated. Oscar and Zoe.

Bloomz – Year 6

Year 6 parents will have received a letter and email about joining our Bloomz page (www.bloomz.net). The aim of this system is to provide weekly updates of class progress to all parents in an accessible way, while reducing the size of the newsletter. Please join. Tissues

Please provide your child with a box of tissues for their

classroom if possible; we have so many sniffles it’s snot

funny.

Year 5 Textiles

The students are finishing up their felt finger puppets.

They have designed their characters, hand stitched the edges and features together and have created an accompa-

nying picture storybook. In the coming weeks they will present their stories to the Prep class, how exciting!! Mrs.

Year 7 English

Year 7’s are reminded that they should be reading every

night at home for at least 20 minutes to help build their reading comprehension skills. Parents, please talk to your child about their text and ask them some questions to

check their understanding.

The Year 7’s have also received letters from students at

Minerva School in Sweden! We were very excited to read

these letters and start our replies today. We were im-

pressed at how well they spoke English and loved the pho-

tos and facts included about their lives. Miss Windridge

Year 8 English

Year 8 English students are reminded that their current

‘Dougy’ assignment is due at the end of the lesson on

Tuesday 16th of May. I am also available for extra support

at lunchtimes on Tuesday’s in Room 11. Homework

sheets are due and spelling tests are conducted every Mon-

day. Mrs Lethlean

Year 5 & 6 Performing Arts

This term the students have been learning the ukulele in

the lead up to our Rock Band unit. The students have

learnt three chords and a variety of rhythms as well as the

song ‘Riptide’. Later this term, students will begin learn-

ing this song using a range of other instruments. Miss Har-

rington

Year 7 Science

As part of Separating Substances, students were given a

dilemma – ‘When faced with drought and not enough wa-ter to supply household water to the town, should purified

waste water be the solution?’ The students learnt about a town in Queensland forced to debate this issue a few Years ago, and then the students had to choose between

the ‘yes, including for drinking water’, ‘yes but only for outdoor use’ or the ‘no, not at all’ campaigns. Please ask

your child about this at home. Miss Harrington Year 5 As I'm sure you all know, we had a power outage last Fri-day. The resourceful and clever Year 5's ensured we were-n't without light though!

Big thanks to Mason H for get-ting some light happening for us as pictured!

Next time someone asks 'What do you need to learn Science for anyway?' You can show them this picture of one of our many talented Physics Scientists!

General Achievement Test (GAT Exam)

Wednesday the 14th of June (10am -1:15pm), sees all

students completing a VCE Unit 3 subject (including VET

subjects) attending the GAT (General Achievement

Test) exam. Students are required to attend class during

period 1, with the exam commencing at 10am – 1:15pm.

However, if students request (with parent/guardian per-

mission via a note) they are able to study period 1 as an

alternative in either the Year 12 room or library.

Year 11 & 12 students involved met with myself on Tues-

day to discuss information about the GAT. They also re-

ceived a letter explaining the GAT and copies of previous

GAT exams, which can also be found on the VCAA web

site www.vcaa.vic.edu.au. Included within this letter is

information on how to prepare, what materials are ac-

ceptable, content, design of the exam and some general

tips. I encourage students and parents to review this infor-

mation together.

Year 10,11&12 Semester One Practice Exams

Year 10, 11 & 12 students will also be participating in a

practice exam week where students will sit practice exams

relevant to their subject areas. These exams will be inter-

nally set and assessed by the subject teachers. This exam

week will take place between Tuesday 13th of June –

Friday 16th of June. Timetables for this were distr ibut-

ed to students last Friday to students.

Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Ed Ski Camp – Semester 2

Monday 4th of September (after the Loddon Valley

League Grand Final) through to Friday 8th of September.

At present I have 18 students that have indicated they are

attending by either paying the full amount of a substantial

deposit. A letter was distributed to these families a month

ago explaining the final cost is $450 per student. Unfortu-

nately, a slight increase on the price two Years ago.

The camp is to Bogong for 5 days. Students will down-

hill and cross country ski for three of the five days.

There are two places available for the Ski Camp –

please see me if you are interested as soon as possible.

Year 9 & 10 Outdoor Ed Bike Camp

Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th of May – further de-
