For everything that was written in the past waswritten to teach us,so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. - Romans 15:4

15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Tim 3:15-17

Opening Statement

The OT is the NT Concealed while the NT is the OT Revealed!

1. To afford a broad overview of the Old Testament (key characters, dates, events, doctrines)

2. To explore the relationship of the Old Testament to the New Testament

3. To enrich and improve our devotional lives (Joshua 1: 8)

4. To spur us to further study of the Old Testament(2 Timothy 2: 15)

5. To help us make it to heaven (Romans 15:4, 1 Corinthians 10:11, 2 Timothy 3:14-17)

6. Old Testament provides “foundations for our faith”

1. Hebrew (97%)

2. Aramaic (3%)(mainly in parts of Ezra and Daniel)

3. Translated into Greek in 3rd century BC (the Septuagint, or LXX) by Jews of Alexandria

How to Read the Old Testament1. Read each book straight through

(Do not necessarily read the Old Testament straight through.)

2. Realize that each book has a theme

An understanding of the several themes in each Book of the Bible will lead to a better appreciation of the content.
