A plate plaque calls me to gratitude
Ephesians 5:19-20 (NRSV) 19As you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to
the Lord in your hearts, 20giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
When I was growing up (not that I am finished), my parents had a wooden, plate-
shaped plaque in their bedroom. It hung there by the door as they went out as long as I can remember. After my dad died and we moved into town, the plaque still held
a place of honor in our home. My mother still has that “plate plaque” 45+ years and three homes later. Every time I think of that “plate plaque,” I am reminded of verse
20 above; and, every time I see that verse 20, I am reminded of that “plate plaque” that must have had a special meaning to my parents. “…giving thanks…all the time…
for everything.” Gratitude in life and living is an important ingredient to happiness. Gratitude is such a powerful emotion, one that can make your life better in so many
ways. It’s quite difficult to feel depressed or sorry for yourself when you are feeling
gratitude. In a study carried out by Emmons & McCullough in 2003, there were a multitude of benefits from keeping a gratitude journal, A simple notebook where you
write down daily what you are grateful for. The study showed that the people who kept a journal exercised more regularly, reported fewer physical symptoms, felt bet-
ter about their lives as a whole, and were more optimistic. It also showed that people who kept the journal were more likely to make progress towards their goals. Overall,
there was a greater sense of feeling connected to others, a ,more optimistic view to-wards life and better sleep quality, relative to a control group. If you would like to ex-
perience some of these great benefits why not try some of these simple ways to make gratitude a part of everyday.
Here is a simple list of 40 simple ways to make gratitude a part of everyday life.
1. Keep a Gratitude journal and add to it everyday.
2. Tell someone you love them and how much you appreciate them.
3. Notice the beauty in nature each day.
4. Nurture the friendships you have, good friends don’t come along every day.
5. Smile more often.
6. Watch inspiring videos that will remind you of the good in the world.
7. Include an act of kindness in your life each day.
8. Avoid negative media and movies with destructive content.
9. Call your Mom more often. 10.Cook meals with love, think of the people you will feed.
11.Volunteer for organizations that help others. 12.Don’t gossip or speak badly about anyone.
13.Spend quality time with your kids. (1 Ciara Conlon.www2 lifehack.org)

14.Remember to compliment your friends and family when they look good.
15.Write a card to someone you haven’t seen in a while and tell them something nice.
16. Add to your gratitude list daily, at least one more thing each day. 17.When you think a negative thought, try to see the positive side in the
situation. 18. Commit to one day a week when you won’t complain about anything.
19. Try to take note when people do a good job and give recognition when it’s due at work.
20. Reward effort, if someone does something nice for you, do something nice for them.
21. Meditate with your gratitude list, giving thanks for all your good fortune. 22. Live mindfully, not worrying about the past or future.
23. Thank the people who serve you in the community. The shopkeeper, the bus drivers, etc.
24. Say thank you for the little things loved ones do for you, things you normally
take for granted. 25. Post quotes and images that remind you to be grateful around your house.
26. Call into an elderly neighbor and say thank you for their presence in your life. 27. Call your grandparents and tell them you love them.
28. Embrace challenges and turn them into opportunities to grow. 29. Send love to your enemies or people you dislike.
30. Be thankful when you learn something new. 31. See the growth opportunity in your mistakes.
32. Help your friends see the positive side to life. 33. When times are bad, focus on your friends who are at your side.
34. When time are good, notice and help others. 35. Make a gratitude collage, cut out pictures of all the things that you are grate-
ful for. 36. Make gratitude a part of family life, share it with each other during meal
time.
37. Practice gratitude at the same time everyday to make it a habit. 38. Focus on your strengths.
39. Share the benefits of gratitude with family and friends. 40. Share gratitude each day by posting a tweet, Facebook post or Pinterest.
Be the change you want to see in the world by making gratitude a part of each
day. If we all practice gratitude more regularly, the world will be a better place. May this Lenten season bring you to the ultimate joy of Easter.
Pastor Kent Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and
more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can
turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES!
FIRST, members from each congregation to help review your congregation’s
constitution to bring into line with the Model Constitution of the ELCA. 2-4 would be sufficient. The more hands, the lighter the load.
SECOND. LENTEN/EASTER THEME: Voices at the Foot of the Cross Ten figures at the foot of the cross, at the tomb and on the road pouring their hearts out
to Jesus in these dramatic conversations. In March, we heard from Judas Iscariot, Mary Magdalene, the Centurion, and Simon of Cyrene. April we’ll present the disciples John
and Peter, and Mary the mother of Jesus. This Lenten season, you are invited, as hear-ers, to ask and wrestle with, "Where am I in this story?" and "What does this crucified
Jesus have to do with me?" You may even do two different individuals if you would like. Parts are running
out – hurry to participate. This is easier than it sounds. Please contact Pastor Kent for more details and to participate in these Lenten dramas.
THIRD, Meals on Wheels needs a new coordinator as Ruth Wojahn is stepping down
as coordinator. Please consider if this is a ministry to which you are called.
FOURTH, Lenten Meals @ Our Savior’s
We will be having Lenten meals when Wednesday worship is at Our Savior’s: March 27th 5-7 PM (which is the regular Community Meal), and April 3rd 6-7 PM. Our Savior’s is
hosting March 27th. There is a sign-up sheet for this night.

Our Methodist neighbors joined us for conversations along with Pastor Clint Evans
Pastor Clint opened the conversation about what the future plans are for our Methodist neighbors and Fairfax Lutheran Parish. Part
of the conversation revolved around the processes the Methodist go through during a call process. Pastor Kent spoke about some of
what the conversations will revolve around.
Below is a summary of the conversations with those present;
Separate congregations – different histories
We are all friends and neighbors and want to accomplish some of the same goals of serving our communities.
Contracting of time. Pastor Kent currently is at a 30 hour work week on his interim contract.
Some main concerns; a worship schedule, another concern is confirmation; currently there are no confirmation age children in
the Methodist congregation at this time.
Methodist Sunday attendance is about 45
Financial arrangements are 55% and 45% with the Sleepy Eye Congregation.
OS about 45 per Sunday and Central about 30 per Sunday.
Methodist as well as OS and Central are used to having shared ministries
Methodist expressed the only real need is Pastoral and they want to continue to have a presence in Fairfax.
Sharing of administrative duties. Methodist administrative staff person is aware of the situation and will go with what is
agreed upon.
Comments about hiring seminary interns on a part time basis if Pastor Kent would take on the responsibility of a Three Point
Parish.
Interim call would have to rewritten into a final placement for Pastor Kent. This would need to be decided by June of 2019.
Pastor Clint suggested the Lenten Bible Study is a good way to get to know each other and working together. Pastor Clint
strongly endorsed Pastor Kent for doing great job.
We ended the conversations for the evening with the Methodist Parish Members and continued with the Fairfax Lutheran Joint Coun-
cil Meeting.
President Ryan Lee called the meeting to order .
Secretary’s report was pr inted for review by the individual councils. Motion made by Tom Runck and seconded by Lar ry
Hanson to accept the minutes as printed. Motion passed.
Devotions: Pastor Kent opened with devotions. If we name our fears and face them head on. God will calm the storm in our
hearts.
Pastor’s Report: Working with the confirmands on learning how to keep a prayer journal.
Central student would like to have affirmation of faith on Palm Sunday. Pastor Kent has agreed to this. Confirmation dates will
depend on how the student faith statements are coming along.
First communion will be on Palm Sunday at Our Saviors.
Pastor would like to hear more reports from the different committees during council meetings.
MN Valley Conference Assembly will be Sunday, March 17th at Bernadotte Lutheran Church
Pastor will be taking a few days of vacation after Easter.
