Termination of Pregnancy (TOP)
Prior to 3 December 2018, it was unlawful to administer a drug
or to perform a surgical or other medical procedure intending to
terminate a pregnancy except in limited circumstances. The
new Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018 applies to termination
of pregnancy in Queensland. The purpose of the Act is to
enable reasonable and safe access by women to terminations
of pregnancy and to regulate the conduct of a registered health
practitioner in relation to terminations.
Registered medical practitioners may perform a lawful
termination of pregnancy on request up to a gestational limit of
22 weeks. After 22 weeks, termination can be provided if two
consulting medical practitioners consider that it is appropriate in
all relevant circumstances.
Where there is a conscientious objection to being involved in
TOP care, clinicians have a professional responsibility and legal
requirement to ensure transfer of care within a reasonable time
frame to a doctor or clinic that does not have an objection.

Led by the Healthcare Improvement Unit, Clinical Excellence Queensland, the Smart Referrals Program will be
commencing their roll out of the new digital referral solution to General Practitioners (GPs) from April 2019.
The local Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Project Team clinically led by Dr Sandra Peters, are
excited to be leading the way as the first Queensland Health region to implement this exciting new technology.
Smart Referrals are new digital referrals that have been developed to align with the state-wide Clinical Prioritisation Criteria
(CPC). The essential information including pathology, tests and imaging required for the referral are clearly displayed to
ensure a quality referral is provided.
The Sunshine Coast HHS are partnering with the Sunshine Coast
Primary Health Network (PHN). Together they have been engaging
with local GP Practices to prepare for the Smart Referrals roll out.
Further details around the progress of the implementation will be
shared leading up to the roll out.
This week, PHN project representatives completed their first
successful installation of Smart Referrals at Better Health on Buderim.
Installations are a key preparation milestone to prepare GP practices
for later roll-out.
Any practices considering using Smart Referrals
that have not yet returned their practice setup form
are invited to book a time for an on-site demo.
To register your interest and to organise a date / time,
please contact [email protected]
Left to Right Greg Hayes (BPAC software vendor rep), Mitch Grambauer (PHN),
Clinton Bazley (PHN), Dr Jon Harper (GP and PHN GPLO), and Karen Mansley (PHN).
TOP GP Referral pathways
General practitioners have several referral options, including:
1. Refer to another General Practitioner who provides
medical terminations of pregnancy.
2. Refer to a private provider who provides medical and
surgical terminations of pregnancy.
3. Refer to the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health
Service:
• Sexual Health Service, Clinic 87 (Nambour General
Hospital) - GPs can refer directly to Clinic 87 for
more timely care for women under 9 weeks for a
medical termination of pregnancy, and patients can
also self refer.
• Gynaecology - Reproductive Options Clinic - GPs
can refer for medical or surgical termination of
pregnancy through your normal referral system to the
SCUH Central Referrals Centre. Please indicate that
this is a PRIORITY REFERRAL.
If you need advice, please call the Gynaecology/Early
Pregnancy Assessment Service CNC (via switch 5202 0000).
Smart Referrals is a digital referrals capability enabling faster
streamlined management of referrals to and within Queensland
public hospitals.

New Electronic Records Go Live at Sunshine Coast University Hospital
SCUH is implementing the new integrated Electronic Medical Record (ieMR) from: 29 January 2019 for the
Enterprise Scheduling Management (ESM) module (patient appointment bookings) and 11 February for
ieMR clinical modules. SCUH Clinics will be ramped down for a period of 6 weeks after the ESM/ieMR go-
live.
Priority will continue to be placed on all Rapid Access and Category 1 referrals, however the waiting time
for some Cat 2 and 3 patients may be extended as a result of the implementation of the ieMR as staff get
used to a new way of working.
How long for/ when: For a period of 6 weeks from 28/01/19 to 03/03/19.
Why: To allow SCUH staff going live with ieMR time for adoption of the change and ensure the safety of
our patients.
How does it affect you: There is no change for the referral and discharge process. This notification is for
information purposes only.
What you need to do: Your patience would be much appreciated. Please communicate as necessary with
your patients the change that is occurring at SCUH. Thank you.
Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital

complications related to movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease.

The HealthPathways criteria are used by the SCHHS to triage, accept or decline a referral.
• All Category 1 referrals will be accepted.
• All ‘complete’ Category 2 and 3 referrals will be accepted (includes all essential information according to
guidelines)
• All ‘incomplete’ Category 2 and 3 referrals will not be accepted (missing essential information according to
guidelines)
• All referrals are considered clinically and individually
The specialists and specialty nurses work hard to ensure that GPs are advised of the reason for declined referrals.
They also appreciate GP efforts to meet criteria to ensure safe and thorough clinical handover in referral.
HealthPathways provide information on:
• Condition specific health pathways to support assessment and management of patients in the community
• Options for alternative pathways of care
• How to refer your patient for a specific condition in a specific specialty
