‘What a fantastic year it has been but now it’s time to part…..’ A MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 2020…..

This has been a fantastic year. You have all worked so hard and even though it was disappointing that you couldn’t put this hard work into practise by completing your SATs, you should be proud of the commitment you made to your studies.

We have enjoyed teaching each and every one of you and thank you for making this year such an enjoyable one – you have been a credit to yourselves, your parents and the school.

Good luck at your respective new schools, we wish you well. Keep safe over the summer holidays and don’t forget to pop back and say hello to us – we would love to see how you are getting on. Continue to chase your dreams and keep flying high!

So, for now, goodbye from all of the staff in Year 6.

READING/WRITING FOCUS LESSON 4 – THURSDAY TASK THREE PUNCTUATION AND GRAMMAR – Salutations Letters and emails have a range of salutations (a standard formula of words used in a letter to address the person being written to) based on the formality of the message, who you are writing to and whether you have written to them recently. Even in a formal letter or email, as you become more familiar with a person, you might drop some of the formality. USING the activity sheet Salutations, CUT out the cards and then rank these salutations according to the level of formality. AFTER THAT, complete part B where you have to CHOOSE five salutations from this list with a range of formality from 1 to 5 (where 5 is extremely formal and 1 is extremely informal) and write a short, one-paragraph letter or email to match the salutation in formality, tone and meaning. THEN complete the challenge. LESSON 5 – FRIDAY COMPREHENSION/WRITING/VOCABULARY Just before we head into reading Part Five – Justin, what do you think of the characters so far? Who is your favourite and why? Who do you like the least? Can you explain why that is? READING/WRITING FOCUS LESSON 5 – FRIDAY TASK THREE SMS stands for short message service. It’s also known as text messaging or texting. You will probably have sent lots of texts in your life so far. Because text messages were originally limited to 160 characters, people used shortened words so that they could include more in each text. Nowadays, most people get free texts, so this doesn’t matter too much; but the language has stuck and it’s still used now. The language of texting is also used in other messaging services. You might have heard of your parents or other older family members using them. Texting language is used so often that the abbreviations have carried over into the English language. C wot I mean? Some words in textspeak are replaced by letters or numbers. YOUR TASK is to match the abbreviated SMS cards with their matching word? THEN using the textspeak glossary on the sheet (section B), WRITE a text conversation between two characters of your choice in Wonder. TASK FOUR DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES Part A For this activity, you will need to watch a range of tv adverts (websites are listed on the sheet) and answer the questions which are getting you to look at the advert from different perspectives depending on the information given as this can change the outcome of your opinion. Part B Watch the video, https://goo.gl/4BPg2o twice. Write this scene as a story, it should take about ten minutes. Include detailed description of the scene, including the weather to set a mood for this part of the story. Decide on the mood that this section of the story has and ensure you capture this mood in your writing. Do not go beyond the action you have seen in the video clip. _____________________________________________

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CHRISTIANITY Our focus this half term is Christianity. Every religion is surrounded by what it stands for, what its beliefs are. Your task today is to look at similarities and differences. Look at the website https://www.natre.org.uk/primary/re-at-primary-level/ and go to ‘Children Talking.’ Then click

on ‘What have others said?’ section looking at the thoughts of children. Think: Do all children of the same religion believe the same things? What do you notice about some of the views of atheist children compared to religious children? Do beliefs

change as children get older? TASK ONE - CHALLENGE Can you think of anything you used to believe that maybe you don’t anymore? Eg: That eating carrots will make you see in the dark! THEN create a sheet that has two columns - Beliefs I’d like to leave at behind at Rowley Hall. - Beliefs I’d like to keep for Year 7. WRITE about the beliefs that you don’t need anymore and those that you think are still worth keeping. SOURCES Use the internet to help you search if you need help or take a look at the link below. https://www.natre.org.uk/primary/re-at-primary-level/ Paper for your comparison belief table.

SCIENCE – BODY HEALTH

CAN YOU SPREAD THE HEALTHY WORD?

Reviewing what we know, have learnt about and can research – we will be looking at how we can advise others about

being healthy and its importance.

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Let’s take this time to reflect on our learning. Remember that we have

learnt about diet, exercise and drugs, and how they contribute to a

healthy lifestyle.

What other aspects of life contribute to a healthy lifestyle? (Rest, sleep, fresh air and lack of stress).

Think about:

Who makes up the wider school community? This might include: pupils, parents, teachers, staff, governors,

community groups.

YOUR TASK

Create an information booklet detailing the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

THINK ABOUT covering the following:

• What are the effects on lifestyle of not eating a healthy balanced diet?

• Have you included: the benefits of regular exercise on general health?

• The importance of a rapid recovery rate as an indication of fitness?

• The effects on health of lack of exercise?

• Can you think of any other information you think is important about exercise?

• Have you included the short- and long-term effects of a variety of drugs?

• Have you included information about drugs that help us as well as harm us?

• Have you written about how drugs affect lifestyle?

• Use a variety of vocabulary.

• Make sure you have headings/sub-headings.

• Use bullet points for effect.

• Include a range of punctuation.

• Think about your audience – who is your booklet for?

ART & DESIGN TECHNOLOGY MAYAN HOUSES (continued from last week) The Maya made their houses from sun dried mud bricks or mud smeared over a framework of wooden poles. They had a basic rectangular base and a pitched roof.

You can have a go at making one by using cardboard to

make a net (or separate pieces to fix together with masking tape if using corrugated cardboard), paint the walls a reddish-brown with sand mixed in to give it

texture, and stick straw (from a pet shop) on the roof. TASK ONE – THE DESIGN TO design a Mayan house. List the materials you will need and step-by-step instructions of how to make it. TASK TWO – CREATE IT THEN start to make your house. TASK THREE – DECORATE IT Make sure you decorate your house in true Mayan style. Remember all of the information we have learnt about their culture and civilisation over the past weeks. TASK FOUR – SHARE IT Don’t forget to share your finished product with us. Upload your photos onto our Facebook page.

HISTORY PURPLE MASH Have a look at these activities that have been put onto Purple Mash for you. LET’S LEARN TOGETHER A selection of activities guiding you through the 1930’s and 1940’s have been set for you. TAKE a look…. There are a selection of writing projects from fashion to food.

There is ALSO a PAINT project….

MAYA CIVILISATION – WHAT DID THEY LIVE IN? Linked to the Art/Design Technology task. TASK – RESEARCH Research Mayan houses. What were they made out of? How were they made? How many rooms did they have? What else do you think you need to research that will help you to design and make one?
